I'd recommend a 206. But they're shite, so I won't.Not tried a 1.0 12V Corsa to be honest but I will be in the next few months as will be getting one for my lad's 17th birthday.

1.0 12v Corsas are shite. There's no point in redlining them to oblivion as not much happens above about 5000 rpm and they just vibrate nastily.Fuckin' awful things. You'd love one!

Lol no shes buying it, I've just offered to help.Which kind of puts the pressure on if the purchase turns out to be a total shed

I can't help you with this one Johnny, you know more about cars than me because you have a Cedric with a gearlever that looks like a sex aid.I don't know why you ask us these questions when you've already made your mind up. Buy what you want and be happy.FUCKSorry wrong forum.

He's right you know. The most awful automotive experience of ever. Grim.

The old shape Yaris seems quite good, my mum had one which never went wrong. She then part-exed it for a new one which has been back to the dealers lots of times. It's never actually broken down but there are quite a few little faults or sensors playing up. It also feels much more claustrophobic inside than the old one

If she's not a speed freak then what about a Pug 206 with the old 70bhp 1.9 non-turbo diesel? They made them up to about 51/02 plate & they are very cheap now that the HDi models are plentiful secondhand. Plenty of the late 1.9's are good spec with Aircon, CD player & ABS.Benefits: Minimal electronic bollocks, no turbo to break & plenty to pick from. Top selling car, so the breakers are full of crashed ones if you need anything. New spares are cheap, most jobs are a doddle to do & those engines are virtually indestructible in my experience as long as they get oil changes, and 50-60mpg in all driving conditions & low insurance grouping makes them very cheap to operate.

Oh dear God no. 206=hopeless (non-existant?) build quality, a voracious appetite for wheel bearings/drive shafts and comedy door/wing striking interfacing moments that'd make a 106 owner smile.Oh, and when you replace the drive shafts it would appear you need to do the bearing-y/bush thing it sits in too. As I found out to my cost recently. They are typical Peugeot: rattly cr4p trim, constant annoying squeeks and weird noises, early ones have pedals dangerously close to each other and whoever designed the green ones with green seats needs the kicking of a lifetime.Fuel wise the HDi I've been kicking about in recently was amazing though, I'll give it that.

^what better seal of approval do you need for a car?If the vauxhall apologist dislikes something, you should buy it at once!!

I'd discounted the Corsa B due to it being too old

I didn't realise that any car could be 'too old'. Too tired, too many miles or too much rust I understand, but too old, well that's a new one on me....

Bubble shape Micra, or if she wants something a bit bigger and just as reliable, an Almera of similar age and mileage would cost about the same (less than an equivalent Corolla or Focus) and wouldn't be all that much more expensive to run. Mrs A has had both and was/is quite happy with her choices. :)

I like 90's and early 00's Peugeots, especially the oil burners - mainly because they are good fun to chuck about & the things that go wrong with them are usually easily fixed and can therefore easily paid for & easily forgiven. :) They do have the odd rattles and squeak, but they are often easily rectified if you can be bothered.

You'd think, wouldn't you.Friend of mine had a 206 non-tubby diesel, needed the HG doing (due to him being a numpty and NEVER checking the fluids or servicing it), he got quoted £400 to fix it, which is about the cheapest HG job I have heard of outside DIY circles... "too epensive" said he, and promptly scrappaged it for a Fiat on finance.:roll:

EP91 Starlet - mine's ace, much better than a Micra I reckon.Might have to look a bit harder for one with PAS though if your missus is insistent on such fripperies as that!

toyota starlet as i said earlier, also basically the same car but with more toys is the daihatsu charade, same reliability, same running gear, same floorpan, slightly different body.

I'm surprised no-one else misunderstood the title and thought you were looking for some sort of swap, (So I'll not bother with asking the questions about mileage, bodywork, number of previous keepers, etc.)

:lol::lol::lol: I hadnt noticed that!!I dont think shes up for swaps as she seems to have completely accepted that my home is scattered with car parts/tools that I cant be arsed to put away/duplicate engine parts that I have ballsed up the order for/kitchen sink as work bench and so on :) I hadnt thought of an Almera either. I'll add that to my list. I did see a 3000 mile Micra for £1600-odd on AT. If thats not a mistake I'd be tempted to tell her to buy it now!!

I believe some Almeras suffer with the old brown lace... rear arches, seatbelt mounts, rear arches, front subframe mounts... look carefully.

I helped a mate of mine buy a Almera 1.4 a few months back, That was a T reg with 93k, rusty arches, patches on both sills and still my mate paid £750 for it, I told him i thought it was dear at the time (He's since wrote it off in the ice the other week  )On the plus side it did drive very nice and was quite nippy and even had Air Con, If you can find a rust free one in your budget then it would be worth a look.

I just counter those threads by suggesting something silly, like a Maserati Quattroporte II. Doesn't seem to work though.

is your girlfriend only an L-spec model? I'd want at least a GL or maybe a Ghia
