CityRover - too shit to be Autoshite?

Ok, it's too new at the moment to even be considered for Autoshite status, but do you think it will qualify in a few years? I mean, it is an unloved car.

Qualified as shite the day it was launched , Not even the least bit desirable which most shite on here is , wont ever qualify for me , bury them all and hope they go away

LEATHER SEATS

You know, I think people are a bit mean about the City Rover, they don't seem that bad. The main thing MG-Rover cocked up was the marketing and pricing.

Posted

Agreed, the pricing was scandalous considering.I had a go in one when they first came out, and with a few nice bits like a single cd and metallic paint, it was over £7k.Which would have been ok if it felt like a quality product. But it didn't.If they had priced it at £4995 or similar, they'd have been fighting the punters off with shitty sticks.I'm considering one for a daily commuter if my latest job application yields success.Theres a cat c salvage on t'bay for £995, or a 2004 with some leg on it £1300. Thats less than my season ticket on the train.....Definitely nu-shite...

Nu-shite. Like it. I've got a soft spot for them and like my admiration of Maestros (even though I've owned a crap one) I can't explain it.

sub-zero crapwould like the pleasure, if i can find one :D

I actively want one, I don't think think they're that bad looking, they're certainly historic and having driven the Tata version they're not so bad to drive!

Posted

I like them, they don't look bad and depreciation is appealling. Let's face it, it's an OK modern car to have if you live with old, boneshakers - I bet this feels like a Rolls Royce.

Horses/courses. You could buy a ShittyRover and it would have faux-wood, air-con, electric toys, alloys and a rear seat accessible for all, not just dwarves. Or you could spend the same money on a same-age KA which will corner nicely and probably run till the end of time, but which is fitted with a rattley engine from a Ford Anglia, exposed metal in the cabin, keep-fit windows and an alarming propensity to fail early-life MoT's on advanced structural corrosion...

City Rovers are/will be worth nothing soon. Maybe I should buy one.........KAs are alright, although its true what pog said, they sound like a woodpecker on roids.

Forget it! City Rovers aren't even worthy to be called 'Autoshite' as they are just utterly crap!My sister-in-law owns a 54-plate one with only 34k on the clock (bought it with a shade over 10k a couple of years ago) and it has been one of the most troublesome cars ever. Her husband's hack is a tired ol' Punto but she would rather use that instead as the Rover isn't guaranteed to come back from anywhere without help...It has got to be up there with the Renner Laguna and Fiat Stilo as one of the most 'avoid-at-all-costs' types of car. Given all the above, I think I'd prefer a Ka instead...

Posted

I'd hit one no danger, should be quite comical and however shite they are I'm pretty convinced they'd could never be as fucking awful or embarrassing to drive as a Ka.

Posted

Fun fact #9809The fastest I have been (as a passenger) in a car was in a KA, doing 115.

If you do get a Cityrover, try and find a mkII with the upgrades. Rare as rocking horse shit they are. The company went bust as the first load were being sent over from India. One load docked and got into the UK and were sold through the administrators. The rest went back and were sold as Tatas. If you get a mk1 make sure it's had the wheeltrimz recall done. Early trims could slice the valve off. NICE.

Surely you could get something less pretencious for a £1k though ?Any number of old Jap tat, BL tat etc.

My parents have a KA. Whilst the engine is horrific (not the slowest small car around, just noisy and not fun to rev), it is a cracking handling car and fun to punt about. The interior is spartan though.

I'd tolerate a CR for the shite/curiosity value, however i would not kid myself that it was a better drive than a KA. No wai!

Modified or falling off a cliff like Wilie E. Coyote, hotly pursued by an acme anvil?
Posted

Believe it or not, it was unmodified! The engines are very nippy. Well that one was anyway. I think it had topped out anyway. Even though 'official' figures say 104 is top speed.

Posted

I reckon so, that coupled with the massively noisey engine gives the impression you are going faster than you are.... possibly.

Posted

Most speedos misread by about 10-15% especially at higher speeds.I have had 130MPH out of a Rover 825 diesel!

 What was the recall, some electricians tape around the valve?

I'd quite like a City Rover, but until I bought the Bluebird I was using a Perodua Nippa as my daily, so maybe my standards are low.
