Sensible 90s Daily? (HIRST CABS content)

Having been driving through the horrible snow in my Charmant with the blowing exhaust I felt it was time, I too, buckled and got a normal 1990s daily. Something fuel efficient and comfortable. I just can't hack driving Autoshite all the time.

.....so I've won this 1992 Nissan Laurel on eBay. Ex-taxi from Japan complete with light and meters and factory-fitted LPG. I am a complete tool.

Hopefully I can just go down and pick it up next week sometime.

Awesome work! And nicely bargainous too.HIRST CABS!

Awesomes, well done Hirst, it is your destiny!

Only thing I would say is that it could do with a slightly jazzier paint job. I favour the yellow with red stripe of Tokyo or is that too modern for the car?

You must bring it to Harewood next year, it's the law.

Well, he's responded and everything so looks like it's going through.

I don't know how it works with taxis, there seem to be a few different colour setups - yellow ones like that and white with a blue stripe seem to be the most common, but there's a lot of plain ones too. I think I remember reading that the blue stripe ones are for highway journeys or something like that.

Plus I think the colourful ones are the sort which you get from a taxi stand, whereas the plain ones are like minicabs.

For example, this Cedric turns up in Violent Cop to pick them up from the hospital:

Awesomesauce. This had pinged up in my search for a daily, I showed Janie, she frowned at me, so I said 'don't worry, I bet Hirst buys it so I can't'.Looks well tidy too.Where about is it? If its not a million miles I can ferry you down to it.

Looks brilliant, if you want to part with the 323 to free up some cash.....you know who to call....:roll:

Bet its as good as it looks in the pics! Great price too, im sure its worth quite a bit more than it went for.

Sterling work Sir! I salute your panache, balls and complete lack of common sense. On a Laurel related note; am I correct-a-mundo in thinking that the taxi versions came with a manual gearbox whereas the civilian spec had a sludge pumper? Or am I wrong? The car is a thing of beauty. The Bluebird has long been considered the tat panacea; however the Laurel must be the Magnum Opus. There is Bluebird in its handsome lines; but everything underneath is better; from the rear wheel drive to the six cylinder engine.

Hey mk1_4dr, I bet your missus will be fairly unsurprised to hear that your prediction came true. Might a bit of a trip for you, Stockport! Might be best if I get the train, it'll only be about twenty quid. Cheers for the offer though!

You can get manual and auto Laurels, autos seem more common though. No six-cylinder in this one I'm afraid, just a scum-spec four-cylinder with a carb. It looks rather pathetic inside for a Laurel - manual window winders, no rev counter, plastic floor!

Boot's got this in it:

Wonder how that'll work then? Never had anything on LPG before.

I found myself strangely drawn to one on Ebay a few months back, I assume this is the same one :? For my sins I can see this sat on some appropriate larger alloys and offering trips around Castle Combe circuit at Japfest this year.....

Posted

Is that the boot? Where will you put your golf clubs? Good work on buying it. That'll be a right laugh to Bez around in.

Thats fantastic!Does it have the driver operated rear doors? 8)

Awww, I was going to ask that!!!!!

Fair enough, if you end up stuck though.....You could pop in and see the WAT on the way home.Oh, and before you worry, the Murco garage on Aberford Road (used to be the JET garage) does LPG. 24hr too.

Posted

We'll see how it goes.Dunno if it's got remote opening rear doors, thought it would do.

I love the way they've left the graduations for the rev counter on there - surely the laziest bit of dashboard design ever to come out of Japan?

Posted

You do get a nice laurel wreath though, that should sufficiently balance it out.

Phew! Here's me thinking the Hirst had lost his mind and picked up something dull like a Primera 1.6 LX or some such....

Excellent. I had my fingers crossed for you.

It's one of the more obviously zany of the Hirst rides. I love the mirrors!

On the boot space thing, there will still be plenty of room. The tank only takes the space between the wheel tubs, under the rear shelf:

Posted Image

There's still a big area behind the wheels / back window.

Posted Image

Corolla taxis in Bangkok use the same system, they still have space for 3 or 4 large bags.

Those Silvia alloys won't be standard though will they? Surely it ought to be on steelies? And will be before the month's out I predict!

Posted

Yeah I'm not fond of those Silvia wheels. Might see if I can get some standard Laurel C32 alloys, we never got them here with steels did we?Either that or I'll chuck the Equips on it.
