MK2? He has quite a few XC70s but I didn't notice MK2 V70s.

I found it quite by accident whilst out for a hoon in the mazda, had to stomp on the anchors and go back for a double take :)

I left an OBD2 lead plugged in which I think drained the battery. The S70 was on hand to jump it. 

In addition to the bad brakes I discovered a huge oil leak. It seemed to be coming from the oil cooler and right enough its gasket was rock hard. I replaced the cooler with the gasket and it isn't leaking now.

The brake vacuum pump was totally gubbed, with a bit of the case punched out. It looked quite new but had no brand names on it. A previous owner had cheaped out and bought a £35 one on eBay, I had good spare VW/Pierburg branded one in stock so fitted that instead. Brakes are back but the ABS light stays on. 

The injector leak off pipes were replaced too as they were brittle and ready to burst.

is your nerd worse than rebs or flowlers?

i hate turquoise coloured anything (yank stuff drives me mad)

but i like this one - cms one was alright so even tho fwd me like

I like VW TDI diesel engines but I don't like VW products so much especially their lack of comfort.

I enjoy the turquoise colour. 

Ideally I'd have this engine in a 940 but they are good to drive.

It is amazing what a difference doing the tracking makes, I was getting sick of driving it, now in love again. 

Have done a fair bit of work to the 850; rebuilt brake vacuum pump, cam and injection pump belts, new tappets, dampers all round, new wishbone, track rod ends, inner track rod, rear ABS sensors, ARB drop links, a brake caliper and intercooler pipe. It currently has a broken handbrake cable and there is still a clunk from the front end which comes from the ARB bushes, they look pretty rotten, and it leaks a bit of oil from the valve cover gasket which has already been replaced. 

It is a real pleasure to drive now, planted and safe, quite chuckable for a big car from the 90s. The new tappets and vac pump stopped the tapping and clacking these engines can suffer from but it is never going to be refined and I like it that way, I enjoy the gruff industrial 5 cylinder noises. It was never slow but with a Ron-Box it is extra nippy and does 40-45MPG driven with vigour. 

850 TDI a great bunch of parts.

Glad you are getting on with it again! Your old S70 is going in to a local specialist on Monday for its MOT and a couple of coolant pipes. Think I’ve done 5000 miles since I got it from you :)

I miss that car! I prefer its plush beige velour over the 850's half leather sports seats. Are there specific coolant pipes I should keep an eye on?

It’s this one and the outtake, the garage said they couldn’t get them from Volvo “Heritage” and gave me a Vida print out with part numbers. Remembered @davidfowler2000 talked about skandix and right enough they had them. Dropped it off this afternoon and it was in good company :)

I was just saying that Scotland is crap for places to take old cars for repairs and equally, parts supply but the exception is Volvos which are certainly well catered for!

As long as the bill isn’t too fancy! There was a guy with an S70 that posted on a Facebook group about the good price and a few others saying they had good service here, so booked it in, but when I turned up the place was immaculate and 2 older chaps working on an Esprit, this gave me the fear that this place was out of my league. Will see what the quote is like for any MOT work… the 2 pipes were £100 but a third of that was postage from Germany!

Lucky escape with the Vac' pump.

They've been known to seize and take out the camshaft.

As a fellow D5252t owner, I'd look at binning off the tuning box, and get a bloke to solder in a chip mount, and have a nice new / flanged chip installed, as they are transformed * allegedly.

Yes I thought about doing that but these Ron Boxes are highly rated, seem to work well and don't risk bricking the ECU.

200k. There are mysterious clunks and an engine oil leak and a broken handbrake cable but it still goes well. It just works, makes good noises and is comfy and relatively cheap to keep on the road.
