The grumpy thread

proboards seems to be down. This means I can't look for replies to a thread I posted on a forum I give a damn about, and also I can't look at Retro-Rides.

edit - forget it, it's come back on

Wat, how big is the company you're working for now? Normally in bigger companies the payroll drones will just process the P46 and not reference to you cv/person who interviewed you, why should they tbh. As im sure you're aware HR depts generally are clueless.

It'll probably be ok if you're doing ok at your current job, Jon. If they know you're a grafter and are earning them money/doing your bit I doubt they'll be too arsed.

I reckon most people lie on their C.Vs* to be honest, and I'm damned sure most employers know this. They took you on after an interview where they could have said 'no' so I'd guess you'd probably be ok.

*I told an incredulous white lie at one interview that was so far fetched it almost had to be true as not many people would have made something up like that. Got me the job and stayed there for years.

Basically, I need to put something down without my new place finding out that I resigned from my last job. So what do I do?

Probably put down 'Personal reasons' as reason for leaving?

If they do ask you (unlikely), you could always say that you only did a couple of days' worth of temp work and therefore didn't feel like it was worth mentioning.

On the 'lies on CVs' bit, I recently applied for a job in Switzerland. They wanted scanned copies of degrees and reference letters from previous employers (I sent them the degrees and told them 'reference letters are unusual in the UK, but here's the e-mail address of my last manager in case you want to ask them anything').

If you had to do this here, unemployment levels would soar to 30%.

Got sniped on an auction for a pair of sills for the Imp - I'd forgotten when the auction ended and was out with the dog at the time. The winning bid was 66p more than my original top bid. Arse.

I really, really need another PC. Not a new one, that would be silly, just a fairly recent one that works?

Mrs_Duke uses the laptop most nights to catch up on TV shit, so I'm relegated to the decrepit pile of crap upstairs. It used to run XP fine many many years ago, now I can barely get Puppy Linux to work on it  There's constant white noise coming through the speakers/headphones, the graphics drivers I need to use with my screen are way too advanced for it (resulting in pretty flashing lines everywhere) and the symbols on my keyboard will randomly switch places with each other for no reason. Oh, and the cooling fan sounds like a medium-sized plane taking off.

The sad thing is, if I stopped buying Vodka for a couple of months, I could probably buy another one. Ho hum

Mine too, I think it's giving me tinnitus

It's probably full of dust/fluff and the computer is overheating. I fixed my ex-s PC by simply poppring off the CPU heatsink and fan, and cleaning them. The thing looked like it had a fur coat on.

I take mine to work and blow them out with the airline but at least the fans are always silent on mine.

The two on the power supply, at the bottom front (kind of upside down) hardly ever run, only the top two and the CPU fan (silent)

No, it's because it dates from the late bronze age, long before quiet PCs were invented :|

Mine is currently the same, the hard drive in my new laptop died, now just out of warranty. So need to find some funds to replace it. So back on my ancient desktop who's normal reaction to running more than one program is to sound like it's having a brain haemorrhage, freeze for five mins then manage to do, well, not a lot.

Think 850cc A series fitted to a Hummer and you're about there.

Means I'm accessing the tinterweb from my phone, which works but isn't the easiest. Plus Apple not allowing Flash Player on mobile platforms, amongst others means it's limited at best.

I know a new hard drive is only about £50 but I don't have that spare at the moment. Bumhats!

my most modern car (2005) has broken down again with a terminal problem.

Haven't worked out, cos I've been in Brighton all weekend, if it is the clutch drive plate sheared again or whether it has knackered an engine mount - whatever, makes some horrible noises when driving along, with clunks to add to the cacophony.

If I don't get blown away, it'll be up on ramps tonight to diagnose ... but when i looked I noticed I had lost a chunk of the gearbox casting that holds one part of the exhaust on!

PC Fools have 2.5 inch SATA hard drives from £23. Only a 160, but it would do for a while.

^^As it should be for the entire period of employment. I should be able to fire someone who works for me if they fail to comb their hair, wear polka dots when I prefer stripes, or if I'm simply moody one day. Ohio is an employment at will state. You don't need a "valid" reason to fire someone. Hey, it's not a marriage. It's a job. You'll leave whenever you want. Why shouldn't the employer enjoy the same freedom as you?

Yeah, that's fucking stupid, and is pretty much the only reason I won't live in the States. California is the same way. One of the most horrendous laws I've heard of, I had no idea it was like that before I went over there this year.

Barrett I'll assume you have never owned and run your own business employing people? if you had you would realise that the Ohio style system would be an advantage not a disadvantage, one of the guys that worked for me cost me £10,000 + and lost a lot of work for my company, resulting in other staff being laid off, all because I couldn't sack him untill we went through all the rigermarole of the employment law......18 months later there was 48 staff laid off and the business closed because of the fact i couldn't sack him when I wanted to......

Obviously it can also be said that some employers would take the piss, thats life..............

At least you've identified your first mistake... (ducks the torrent of abuse that's on my way from the numerous Citroen/Peugeot/Simca fans here... )

Feel utterly shit today. Crap ear syndrome back with a vengence. Wrecked what was going to be a decent day out with Uni folk, one of which we're trying to cheer up because of some personal issues.

ARGH.

Someone who says to the wife, "yes, I'll put that up for sale" but when he gets no replies says "I'll have to keep it, no-one else wants it".
