You know how sometimes a solution appears you weren't expecting? That just happened. Parents said that they'll provide what the Princess would likely sell for so that I don't have to sell it, they've even stumped up for the bonnet - one of those rare opportunity things, otherwise I doubt they would have bought it, I was going to let it go - it needs and have offered to assist with the BX costs until I get some work. I've applied for another fistful of jobs, including an office cleaning job which is really shit pay and hours, and I just have to hold my breath a bit longer I suppose. I feel really helpless and all I seem to be able to do is focus on the things I can't do rather than the things I can. I can't even figure out how things have got this bad, I'm always very careful with money and not spending more than I have but somehow over the past couple of years my caution has failed me and it's all gone to shit... It has to change, it can't keep being this rubbish, surely.

You're still there and still coping...it's amazing how things sometimes turn up just as you need them. You've a lot of people in your corner, people you've never met (and maybe never will...). You've only got to see the response to Alex going walkabout to realise none of us are alone. Keep your chin up, the tide will turn same as it always does.

After treating the volvo to a set of replacement handbrake shoes and cable plus a set of front drop links, how does it repay me? with the clutch slipping.

That's a 7 hour job at London prices (£52 per hour is the cheapest around here) plus about £300 in parts. Do I try to sell it on now, or just keeping driving until it's undriveable and weigh it in / sell it at a later date?

If anyone would be interested in a 106k mile 2.4 Volvo phase 2 with 9 months mot and a 3 months tax pm me.

You should try one of those clutch centre places. These guys are so switched on with the ins and out of swapping clutches they can do it for a fixed price and in much less time than a normal garage.

I know of at least one garage who just drives their cars over to a clutch centre, lets them do the work then gives it back to the customer.

thanks!

I just phoned "Mr Clutch", £550 for the clutch and slave cylinder, if the DMF has gone it'll be £400 on top of that. Not looking good for it at the moment.

It's an interesting theory about them being clutch specialists, but I've worked at a Mr Clutch (for four days before I ran away) and it was SHOCKINGLY bad. The people doing the work hadn't got a clue and hated their jobs, so you can imagine the levels of quality involved. Also, the clutch on my silver BX was fitted by Mr Clutch and has a nasty judder (though my wife reckons I might be imagining it as she things it's fine!).

Other Clutch Specialists are available. It must be a swine of a job on a Volvo as I think the going rate for an impreza is 600 and they're supposed to be a right 'mare.

I would automatically suspect any clutch replacement centre called Mr Clutch! Just as I would mistrust Mr Engine, Mrs Tyres, or Mz Balljoints for that matter! Bound to be staffed by under paid youngsters that haven't a clue! In my opinion*

My sainted Christ, this bloke with the MOMO wheel is hard work. It's taken me three days to establish [two or three word answers each time] that :

1. He's in St Helen's

2. He's off tomorrow

3. He's off tomorrow until 4.

4. He might be available at mid-day tomorrow but hasn't suggested if that's a goer or not. I've suggested a meeting point.

Chin up VA! I've been in similar positions so many times I'm practically a professional. You've seen me going through it just in the last couple of years. There IS light at the end of the tunnel, and it isn't always the next train. Things can change. People will help, when they can, which may not be the help you'd like but will often be the help you need, or at least some of it. You sound lucky in your parent-choice, just show them you appreciate what they're doing and keep applying for stuff. Good things can come out of the blue, I know.

Every day you wake up, is a good day.

I had a clutch replaced by mr clutch once before at a branch in Bristol - they did a good job. Volvo book time is 5.1 hrs, so the "Volvo specialist" I stopped at on the way home said it'd probably take 6 or 7 hours. That tells me that perhaps it's not a job I should be attempting on my driveway....

Guys, thanks for the support, really. I know I'm not alone, and it's the chance to have a forum to just voice concerns and and stresses that helps keeping me from doing anything too scary. I've done the walk-off thing a couple of times in the past when I've not had the support I need and when I've let my pride get the better of me. Before I know it I'll be in a shitty job and complaining about how it was better when I didn't have a shitty job, I've no doubt!

I tried them on the 460, didn't like how they looked and so sold them with some bloody pricey adaptors to a dubber who wanted them for his Golf. Remind me to get you a pint in if we both make it to Shitefest.

Stay the course Gyl - willpower is not something you lack. You managed to make a silk purse out that pig's ear of a BX, it looks superb thanks to your efforts.

There seems to be quite a bit of work in Manchester via agencies and call centres - worth a train ride over one afternoon?

MOMO UPDATE : I suggested a mid-day meet up tomorrow, the guy replies with 'When?'

Fucking brilliant. Still not got my fucking KV6 back. I phoned up the garage man (of whom I recently spent a week helping before my new job) on Monday this week and politly asked him if he could get my car sorted by Thursday before he closes for the Easter weekend. Today I phone up and they've been 'busy' all week and haven't started on my car, I can believe this because this garage takes on far too many jobs than they can actually handle.

This has pissed me off no end, its ruined my easter weekend which I was going to spend getting to know the car and visiting my family. The garage won't be open until Tuesday next week when I go back to work, this means I have to use the Micra to get to work. Its a fucking stupid situation, I own 5 cars and have to resort to using my mums car because my own cars are either not working or far away waiting to be collected.

I have lost faith in this garage, I shall give him until the end of next week to get it sorted, by then I'll take it away, exhaust or no exhaust, I shall also settle my bill as fast as I can and be taking my business elsewhere.

Angyl - Hit as many agencies around the local area as you can, if you manage to get an interview with one, be upfront about what you and what you don't want. Also, if an agency asks you to bring any paying in details, it usually means they have a job ready for you. Good luck mate, it takes time and can try your patience but you will get there.

@Wat: I hadn't put two-and-two together but Manchester isn't actually a bad call as I have a friend in Manchester with a spare room and off road parking he's not using that *might* be able to help out. I cannot brain lately, so that's actually a bloody useful suggestion! Thanks for the compliment about the BX too, you know just exactly how unpleasant a thing it appeared to be better than most!

@LS: Precisely what I am doing. We're nearly at the end of the tax year, I think this is a big reason I'm finding it difficult to find employers who are setting on, come mid-April I'm hoping that changes, particularly with NHS type vacancies.

The twats that employ the company I work for to provide them with Security have disconnected the landline phone in the office, meaning I have to rely on my mobile (And my own minutes) to make check calls and clock on/off... Via the 0845 number we're supposed to use!

Likely fucking chance I'm going to spend £1 per call doing as I'm supposed to, when I'm redundant as of Sunday. Best thing? The area manager has ensured all of his "mates" from his old job have nice, safe, comfy office jobs in the company and are therefore immune from being made redundant. They've been advertising jobs for weeks without telling us, on private websites such as Reed etc etc when all of us poor cunts have been looking at the companies internal job page which has been hopelessly empty.

If anyone thinks about going with Securitas as a company, don't bother. They're a bunch of cunts.

I have no shame in saying this now. Nothing left to sodding well lose.
