Got this sitting in the garage, correctly registered, done about 100 miles since it's last MOT (didn't MOT it last year), just need it out the way tbh

2.0 pinto, lots and lots of new bits but bloody uncomfy 😆

Sorry to thread hijack!

is that a kit car?

apologies OP, not meaning to derail your thread

no problem, looks like a cracking little car - and you’re just up the road from knockhill, someone could have a pretty awesome collection day if they planned it right :)

a bit of a catchup with exo

having run it over winter the first year, the suspension was looking a little rough

IMG_7548.jpeg.739586abed8cfbf66ccc1ded8f741a8d.jpeg

time for a tidy up

IMG_7554.jpeg.82f52c36f5d2319bc85ea60af80460b4.jpeg

IMG_7564.jpeg.3036d43eeb52172fae4994f7a944b57a.jpeg

 droplinks  too

IMG_7555.jpeg.424bc557e55467a72f182f89462c098b.jpeg

then winter came round and i didn’t have time to do the other side :(

the mk2 suspension with those yellow springs was also letting the side down so when a set of low mileage mk1 shocks appeared locally, i snapped them up

(the lad selling them had just bought a 1995 mk1 mx5 with 27,000 miles on it - it was beautiful)

IMG_0966.png.317c3e606690af70a37f1aa6022cf5ca.png

still looking a bit scruffy, i pulled them apart for a lick of paint

IMG_0921.jpeg.f03b4bfe1b7150c9ec0e80f826681e5c.jpeg

IMG_0925.jpeg.811a5ef63280669daa03935f0c0c71f5.jpeg

i found a set of springs in the loft (bought years ago from a fellow exo builder who had them stripped and coated before changing his mind)

IMG_0922.jpeg.980f9fd0e7e3e2f8571a1f8e8ca98400.jpeg

and got them all put back together again

suprisingly good for gasless mig on stainless

and back on the car - no more leaks

should i paint the calipers to match ?

IMG_1220.jpeg.0d2fd902846ea3f8985b5122657ad688.jpeg

yellow might not have been the best choice but i’m running out of time so a wipe over with a rag will do for now

while it was up in the air, i noticed the cam cover looked a bit shabby

IMG_1131.jpeg.806e6f15472ac911612416c6c8575002.jpeg

fortunately i had a spare

IMG_1130.jpeg.054443a4c5c7156385a321287cfcc83a.jpeg

looks pretty smart but those open cam gears are just asking for trouble

IMG_1154.jpeg.018aecfd6c70bdda91b89cb80f76fede.jpeg

so a couple of coats of wheel silver were applied and a very delicate bit of filling in on the lettering

IMG_1153.jpeg.1fadf62deadb49317b8ebc3ef20371ed.jpeg

much better

shiney green shocks

it’s smooth as you like on decent roads but bouncier than mr bounce on a trampoline when the going gets tough :(

it drove brilliantly on the previous set up so maybe i’ll need to get them refurbed now ?

shame, as it looks great now with the green ones on

Looking good though sounds like the hulk springs need swapping over.

Was thinking in the pics they look more tightly wound then when i looked again they look like they're not quite sitting in the cups properly. Maybe that was pre seating?

it’s an odd design, the mk1 set have a flat perch whereas the mk2 set is stepped for the spring to seat properly.

i’ll strip the yellow mk2 set and get the springs blasted and coated then swap back. it’s not undriveable, just not as good - i probably won’t book any track time yet

someone was asking on the exo group about exhaust manifolds and whether or not a heat shield was needed

IMG_1257.jpeg.ca6e4cd50c23c287bbdc4a8ede6e7b0e.jpeg

i posted a pic of mine showing there wasn’t really much space for a heat shield but as there’s plenty of fresh air, it’s probably not needed anyway

IMG_2344.jpeg.e4e4e91fae7965fc5a31a8d07725d6ba.jpeg

shiney bright heat resistant paint lasted well :(

also, what’s that ?

IMG_1258.jpeg.daf0b6ffc1a8b4f9e491da00d4ef70f4.jpeg

bugger - i’ll whip it out to investigate

mot due at the end of the month ?

time to ditch those funky led headlights then

good beam pattern on them

IMG_1313.jpeg.582c7cf1b9d1520488863021c99bd80a.jpeg

obviously i had to go for a test drive, they’re a decent light once i’d got them lined up a bit

the giant headlights had been out on loan to another exo builder while he got his iva test passed.

on my way to pick them up, i happened across Brancepeth Castle, someone had left the gates open - how could i resist ?

IMG_1306.jpeg.61f44a0157a13c526e28c2a61c79f44c.jpeg

it’s a big solid lump of a castle, i’ll need to go back for a proper look

had a bit of trouble with emissions, looks like the catalyst is on the way out :(

but a clean pass is what i was looking for - there will be celebrations tonight :)

not the best weather for a trip to the mot station but i arrived only “mildly moist”

with a fresh mot in hand, there was no option but to head out for a hoon, destination : the dairy barn car meet, hunwick, near crook

about half a mile from the ‘barn, i noticed an unusual rattling noise that quickly got a lot louder :(

pulling over, i had a look under the nose and immediately spotted the cause - the horn had vibrated itself loose and was rubbing against the water pump pulley

turns out the bracket had completely sheared through

IMG_1368.jpeg.d80e60b238beb68a6df3be631e0c608c.jpeg

not ideal, but an easy fix

IMG_1369.jpeg.3de18af2b751ba67da171980f30fbf8f.jpeg

back home, i dusted off the unused half of the twintone set and fitted it in place of its fallen comrade

IMG_1377.jpeg.29097954f5d025c79e522e21acf37295.jpeg

will do for now, while i find something more suitable and mount in a less vibraty position

the little mx5 hasn’t been getting much attention since the jaag arrived

IMG_1428.jpeg.e0d5dc2fc4bc68bd63b343d12250c3d0.jpeg

so i filled the tank and took it for a run out

IMG_1517.jpeg.ae894f41c9d12bac7d8e0ab65079293f.jpeg

Hartside Pass

IMG_1518.jpeg.df4ed39c900c768d7e15f7d3ffe36cc3.jpeg

seeing as Penrith is near Carlisle, and that is nearly Scotland, i pressed on up the A7 (what a road, barely a car in sight, lots of fun)  and found myself in Kelso.

so loaded up with supplies and headed for home

IMG_1520.jpeg.57b1d6d99d0faa6c7b52b059f5129e3e.jpeg

used a full tank of fuel just nipping to the shops !

and what a great little car that mx5 is, just loves being hooned round the twisties :)

as it was TwixFest last weekend, I had to choose which car to take : exo or the mighty mx5 ?

simple solution - take both :)

@DVee8 took little to no persuading to hoon the mazda round northumberland, @Mi30n came along in his ginger biscuit mx5, his brother Alex in a very shiney golf gti

IMG_1612.jpeg.e49c1560c07e23fc4dfaa035622951ec.jpeg

mrs @KruJoe seemed quite taken with the Exo

IMG_1605.jpeg.e054220bc68cecf7fb7de705cb883c9c.jpeg

then @Schaefft was let loose behind the wheel

IMG_1608.jpeg.68bd7bf295c5dcdf32e0b07360588ef8.jpeg

much hooning occurred on some particularly well chosen roads - thanks @loserone
