My brother had a 316 saloon ,bought with around 65 thousand on the clock.I think it was the N42 engine.It was totally immaculate,but of course the top end of the engine went wrong.It sounded like the Valvetronic setup had broken.A quote of €2000 to fix,and no guarantee that it would be ok afterwards,as it would be impossible to be sure that all bits of broken metal would have been removed without a total stripdown at further big expense.It got part exchanged,broken,for a leased diesel 1 series.

I'm not down with the excessive lowering/big wheels tbh. If modifying a car means can't get itself down a back road aswell as or better than the manufacturer intended then it's a bit pointless. Glad you've grown out of it?

Seems my old one is back on the road, someone has given it some life. Glad it wasn't me working on the bastard thing though

Don't get me wrong I think I'll always be a fan but like you say making a car which is made for driving undrivable is a bit of a odd thing but hey different strokes for different folks eh!

This damn thread... 

What to look for on a 2003 320d touring? 240k but the MOT history is fairly clean. Mostly advisories for covers obscuring the engine or tyre wear. A fail last year on nsf ball joint being excessively worn, and one in 2016 for the wiper not clearing the screen. 

At that age and miles is it just a case of run it and cross your fingers that it'll pass another test in nine months?

I imagine a 240k 320d won't be much more than 500 quid so you wouldn't be missing out really if you took a punt just get it and run it till it blowz up

Did a bit of digging, it was owned by the same family for fourteen years until last month, and has been advertised on fb and gumtree by five different people since then... Gonna skip that one ?

Mate of mine has a 330i Coupe with the same wheels. I insist it's up there with the most handsome cars I've ever seen, those 42millionspoke wheels are gorgeous and compliment the styling so well.

Yeah mv4s are gorgeous shame they're all cracked due to our lovely* roads

Yeah. Two of his were replaced by the previous owner, as they came up on an MOT. He's had a couple of a scary moments where he's hit some hefty bumps and had that immediate, heart sinking "Oh Fuck." feeling expecting the worst, but he's not had any fail in his 40k miles with it.

(Jack, if you're reading this, and I've just jinxed your car, I'm sorry)

What's the chances eh? Drove into my local upullit yesterday with my mate Duncan who I'd bought my 330d from. What was sitting in the car park?

I have a 325i.

My second child was born in the passenger seat, kind of by accident. We were less than a mile from the hospital... 

It has an oil drinking habit but I accept and forgive it, and the usual rust starting but it's not so bad.

Ccv is brittle and gaffer taped together.

Previous owner installed a conical filter, so it sounds like a kid slurping an empty milk shake glass.

Boot hinges snapped a couple of months after I bought it so I bought eBay ones and fitted them myself. Lessons learned: don't bother, get a body shop to do it! I now have a scratched and dinted roof and the boot lid sits too low and the glass pane even lower, and that's after rounding the bolts. And it took three of us. And I had to grind the old bolts off... 

But it was worth it to be able to open and close the boot and have it work in properly.

But here is my very one in a video (before I fixed the boot hinges)

The only problem with this car is that my wife is trying to steal it, I think.

Ok I need to ask a question @jamiechod and all who've been on the E46 journey,

On deceleration in gear, I.e. under engine braking, there is occasionally a feint rumbling. My local garage told me it was a component that I've forgotten the name of so I'm going to call it a Boris. It's a rubber disc that bolts between the drive shaft and the engine coupling. 

He said my Boris is split, and indeed it was. So I've bought another Boris and it's waiting to go in when I have the time. Question is: that actually what's causing the rumble? Reading here had made me wonder if it's the DMF?

I suppose I'll find out but should I be budgeting for a flywheel in the near future?

My friend has just had his late E46 coupe condemned by a localish BMW specialist due to a load of brake repairs required. It has a Boris MoT until October. 
It is a shame as it looks quite smart in sort of CSL grey and has very clean black leather interior. I thought it might be a good reshell for a drifter. They could punt the interior. 
He is in the process of contacting a local BMW breaker to see if they want it or WBAC.

3 series touring are lovely cars. We have a 2007 E91 which we've owned for three years so far. We keep on talking about sourcing a newer one, but this old girl continues to do the job so damn well. They tick masses of boxes and the split tailgate is perfect for our greyhound! Does the E46 have the same issue as ours where the rear wiper spindle seizes in the tailgate glass every twelve months or so, but then works perfectly well after a quick strip down, clean and lube?

Yes it does, as do various 5 tourings.

Ive found that squirting electrical contact cleaner in saves the process of stripping it down.

My rear wiper is fine, has been for a year and a half...

But yes it's an endearing car, does everything very well. I go on family holidays, pull a trailer for work, load it up for work, have fun on the twisties, chew motorway miles, etc etc

Yeah, I’m going to buy a newer/lower mileage car as mine is getting a bit needy and rusty at 15 years and 207k miles

Does sound like the guibbo or prop donut as they are called mate they are very common on bmws... The slack in the drive train will be more apparent on deceleration so makes sense

If anyone has any bmw related questions especially e46/e9* please don't hesitate to PM me or ask on here. Chances are I'll have replaced it/them myself or thought about fixing whatever has gone wrong at some point over the last 15 years ?

Advice time Jamie. Ive got the chance to buy a really good quality stainless system for mine. However I don't have to. Im a bit torn really cos all I want is to make it sound like a bmw 6 used to sound. Sharp and bassy but not boy racer. There's a lot of choice from the likes of magnet, borla etc al. So do I bother spending money that'd be better spent on ongoing maintenance and improvement or do it? And if so on what? Answers on a postcard. Or on here. Im easy

sorry mate, only just seen this. 

id be tempted to stick with OEM as they very rarely rust and i think they are stainless from factory. the 330ci has larger headers and wider bore (3" iirc) from factory so already makes a nice noise.

ive gone down the backbox delete route which is far too loud, i think the sweet spot is removing the mid silencer which sits under the fuel tank, it just provides a little more noise but no drone - fella in blackburn can sort that for you for less than £50. (arek at A&M exhausts)

Cheers Jamie. Im here and there with it, I'm tempted to do something cos I can but on the other hand I'm not 17 anymore and I don't want to spoil the car. There is a fella in Clitheroe as well who builds bespoke and has been going a long time. Ill have to give it some thought
