More cars I didn't know where sold in Australia, the Citroen ID (apparently locally assembled along with DS models) :

When the Australians started to put protectionist tariffs on complete cars a lot of manufacturers started to import CKD kits.

This was one of the reasons Citroen eventually closed their operation in Slough.

Here's a brilliant report from March of 1981 looking at two upcoming models from Eastern Europe - the Zastava 101 and Dacia 1310 - the latter of which was expected to be on sale in Britain that summer!

And while we're here, here's an article about the Yugo Sana from November of 1989.

I actually liked the look of the Sana when it came out. Reminded me of a Citroën ZX. Unfortunately the small matter of a war in the Balkans got in the way, otherwise it could have been a contender.

I heard the Sana was based on a concept design Pininfarina drew up for styling the Fiat Tipo.

I presume the author is the Douglas Blain who is now publisher of The Automobile?

They were a great car. Borgward was nobbled by being forced into liquidation while actually being solvent.

My dad always bought used cars but I think he was a little tempted by the prospect of a brand new Yugo Sana in 1989/90. Just as well he hung on to the '83 MG 1600 instead as he lost his job the following year.

@coalnotdole @Will on Syros

I'm finally enjoying my Enfield after months of being garage-bound. Took my old mum for a spin yesterday. Lovely little clicking whirring vehicle.
