@Andyrew currently on page 13 and very much enjoying the content - not sure what the etiquette is for posting on another persons forum ... so I'll keep it shortish and hope it doesn't offend !

Came across the fabulous Scammell when looking for spares for my 2cv ( I had 2 one with a galvanised chassis but buggered body,  the other with a  decent (ish)  body but buggered chassis ) did this in the yard of my ex wife expansive property a few years ago ..

The Scammel is "somewhere under a M5 bridge in Somerset" and I just bloody loved it ! almost as much as I like a Ferret ....(which I'd like to own)

The painter in another unit asked if I could look at a clonk on his nissan, the MOT tester and tracking guy didn't find anything. this turned out to be failed front subframe bushes. Some amazon specials were ordered by the owner and the two rear bushes were replaced, access was a bit shite but overall not too bad. After that he asked if I could have a look at his sons golf mk2. Amusingly it was previously left too close to a heater

Converted to single wiper 20 years ago The wiper motor had failed and the car is slowly being reverted to stock ish.  Grinding out welded in panels on the underside of a scuttle panel is very slow going.

Second hand linkage and motor fitted. The screens coming out in the future for some paint and rust repair.

The plug had been chopped off, I had some wee crimps and small heartstrings that fitted nicely on the pins. Some Google searching  found the correct wiring order and we are ready to test. This was when I  discovered that the wiper stalk had been snapped off and failed to be glued back on. This required the steering wheel to come off. 

this had been butchered and glued back on.

Then i spent way too long repairing the wiper stalk which had snapped in three places and filled with volumes of superglue.

New similar looking ones avaliable online but none of them said they matched the part number of this one. I also wanted the car done that day so repair was the cheapest and fastest option.

All tested and working like it should.

Double arches

A familiar trailer had rotten wheel arches,  plastic ones are avaliable, a bit pricey I thought and rather than wait for those to turn up, I opted to fold up my own out of a big sheet of steel I'd had kicking about for couple of years.

When hearing his golf had been repaired the painters son asked if I could have a look on a weekend at the grinding noise on his work van

The garage that had done the brakes years ago had mentioned a caliper being a bit sticky previously. It appears it got stuck and chewed out the pads on one side. Like any self employed persons work van, a day off the road is a loss of income.  So it wad driven for quite some time and destroyed the disc.

Front pads, New rear caliper, rear discs and pads fitted and it's back to stopping. 

It's a workvan so it's pretty hanging but that's someone else's problem.

A friend asked if would help him service his old mk4 golf estate powered by some PD goodness. 

After servicing the car we had a little nosey underneath for an upcoming MOT.  Noted it was pretty crusty from having lived in Scotland for a while, it looked like a clean up and slap of oil may buy it another few years.

A return visit and some needle scaler action see a quick bit of rust treatment turned into a decision time.

The underseal is so strong it hides alot of rot.

The car went away for a pre MOT and brakes and emissions were okay so the decision was made to commit a chunk of dosh and fix the car.

New sills ordered and we started cutting. Handily my friend used to be a welder/fabricator so we can work together to get it done. We are going for solid but quick so perfection isn't the target.

Although while my friend can weld,  I have to do the filler work booo.

Along with the sill rot multiple new parts have been ordered and fitted.

Front subframe 

4 door lock actuators

Tie rods and end with boots

Lower arms 

2 front shocks

2 toyo tyres

Man these hide rot well,Had we have known how far this rot went we would have ordered the inner sill to floor bridge panels but not wanting to wait we just made up patches, again not going for perfection just chop out the rot a patch in fresh metal. Sadly we had to do two patches on the floor pans right under the seats, so interior trim and both seats had to come out then the carpet and underlay lifted up and away. 

Tomorrow just one more patch on a rear axle mount area and some gravitex sprayed on and we are done for now.  With the suspension work too it's been a slog, but it's saved another old shed from becoming a fridge for a few more years, Even if it is a golf.

Axle is next on the list, it's very crispy as are the brake lines, it went for a ticket and passed but i think really it should have failed on the lines.

One good thing about these is that everything is available and cheap, I think a new axle was £100.

If you do end up doing the axle you will almost certainly need to replace the stub axle bolts and the calliper carrier bolts. Also the rear wheel bearing inner rings will probably be very tight on the stub axles and be left behind after you pull off the hubs. The bearing ring is only about 1/8" wider than the stub axle body so pretty impossible to get a puller behind it until you resort to some serious heat, punishment and stilsons to move it enough to get a puller behind; naturally the bearings were finished after all this excitement. New stub axles are available and cheap and would avoid this but I was too tight to buy them.

Stats the question

With my trip to Wales on hold for the moment,  I messaged my mate to see if he wanted me to fit his new thermostat and do a quick oil change for him. He's busy doing house stuff so tinkering on his own stuff is low on the list.

The car had been running a little cool it seems, new stat obtained which mean removing this

Coolant absolutely everywhere , but overall not a bad job too do. Febi Aftermarket stat opens earlier and the temp sensor it came with was reading wrong, original ford sender fitted back in a few days later. Now reads fine. 

This car is why i have a Suction pump, because the first time it was serviced here (prior to having lifts)  the undertray was a ball ache, so I went and bought a pump! With that deployed and doing its thing, the filter was removed with its special tool and a new filter chucked in, then about 6 litres of lovely castrol sloshed in, while the oil gets changed every 6k roughly, this time a  new air and cabin filter went in too as they hadn't been done for a couple of years. 

Do like these mondeos.
