This pre-airflow estate looks pretty snazzy, maybe except for the 3 inch thick Dulux post box red paint in the engine bay

Jetta GTi is surely the ultimate AS hot non-hatch. Unless they made a Vauxhall Belmont SRi?

They definitely made a Belmont SRi - I worked with a guy that bought one (in that bright white colour). We used to wind him up by saying it was just the same engine as my wife's 1.8 Cavalier RepMobile and that it was just as fast* . He would always. always rise to the bait (even though his car was faster and had a bit more BHP).
Both models were easily stolen with a screwdriver and some muscle - his was recovered, ours wasn't.

Excellent. In my head they are always white with those faded grey plastic door handles.

Yup - for bonus poverty spec. points his didn't even have colour coded bumpers and side trim - pretty much a standard Belmont with stickers.

Looks like the Belmont SRi was more or less comparable with the Kadett GT, the main difference being that the GT could be had as a 1.6 or 1.8. There doesn't seem to be a 1.6 SRi?

First registered in 1944?

Coventry 1944 Jan EKV894 to May EKV999, so that is correct.

1944 registration of a model that launches in 1946.

Suggests that it maybe a pre production prototype / test mule ?

Would explain the odd radiator...

The 1939 prototype car still exists and is very interesting, because all the wing pressings are shaped to take the vee-shaped grille but have been disguised and adapted to carry the traditional flat, pre-war grille, presumably to prevent competition from seeing the new design. 95% of the first 2,426 chassis (1946 to 1949) were fitted with saloon bodies built by Briggs Motor Bodies Ltd. of Dagenham and 95% of the last 579 chassis (1950 and 1951) were fitted with coach-built bodies built by Barker and Co, at the Radford Works, Coventry. The remaining 5% (or so) were fitted with a range of interesting bodies, including several vans, several two-door drophead tourers and several saloon car bodies built by other coachbuilders. Other known coachbuilders include Avon, Hooper and Wentworth.

Probably not of huge use for most here but a mate of mine has been asked to sell a hoard of 80s Opel parts.

Let me know if there's any interest, obviously getting stuff to the UK would be the tricky bit.

I’ve always thought the pre-airflows look like they’ve just seen something absolutely disgusting
