My neighbour has got a bleeding Ford Cortina. I know this for a fact because the other day I saw them go out in it when I was hiding in my wooden post box. I got it from bladdy ebay.

SR20DET has been successfully fitted to RX-8s. Rebuilds of the standard Wankel START at 2 grand, and the rebuild kit to do it yourself is about 800 nicker. Small wonder the cars are so cheap.

I don't understand photographs of photographs to advertise a car... surely it would be easier to photograph a car?

@Mr Boll: sadly, many gay people have precisely no taste, it's like they're on a self destruct mission to tar all of us sausage wranglers with the same woeful name. Rest assured, this is one gay that is driving around in style rather than cruising into his nearest Halfords for shinies and Princess stickers.

These things seem to be dropping like flys lately. It's like Mazda's pushed a self destruct button at the factory and they've all just gone lunched themselves.

Here's one for £550, which as about as cheap as I've seen one. I wonder how hard it'd be to put an mx-5 engine in it?

RX-8's are much cheapness. If the engine hasn't blown, it will soon.

I'm sorely tempted to buy one. If you're handy with the spanners a SR20DET or Chevy LS1 transplant is the way to go, from what I've read.

That said many gay people have great taste, the both Allegro and Princess seem to have a large gay following.

I've heard of the ls1 conversion but I wonder if you could do something simpler on a budget? 2.0 Pinto and type-9 :)

A 2.5 N/A diesel out of a 94-03 Transit?

Sorry to be a dope but what is a SR20DET ?

An engine out of a Nissan Silvia/180sx. Popular in the drifting scene.

Pffft that would be for mongloids only. Real men would use a 2.3D from a Sierra

I read something about US car dealers doing this. The dealers essentially finance the cars themselves (rather than using the finance company) but charge massive interest rates. It's shite as it's targeting people who can't afford it/are too stupid to know better.

That's why I'm looking at that car (in California) thinking that's actually a reasonable price for it here!

I'm with Mr K on the tranny DI conversion (type 9's are not what I'd call cheap), some may argue Perkins Prima is a better choice though the DI's are more plentiful given the fact of the London lezzer zone and the henceforth demise of the pikey dizzler favourite around these parts. + proper (RWD) Transits are a drift weapon* Can't comment on the 2.3 although I've heard the 1.8TD the man in sierra circles since looking for a derv Cortina conversion.

Hmmm, anyone put a DI in a Cortina?

*in the wet with high poundage baldy rear hoops and a heavy foot

P.S That Escort estate wounded my retina deeply

Go on then rub it in for poor old me here, outside of San Francisco, in the 90 degree heat, that's seen only way day of rain, since the start of May....

A shagged one of those would be going for something like $10k I suspect.....

Fark me they are MEGA cheap. Why are they going Kaboom?

I am wanting one. What causes the engines to self destruct?

Fuelly is not as bad as I was expecting either. Not great but not as horrific as expected.

Wankel rotary engine. Mazda got it pretty much sussed but when the rotor tips wear, they lose compression and need a rebuild.

They're very sensitive to oil changes, as the engine burns oil by design.

It's not like a Corolla where you can change the oil every 4 years (or 50k, whichever comes first :D )

If you don't check the oil regularly, well....you know what happens.

Add to that the need for a rebuild every 30-40k means punters don't treat them like they should.

Have a read of some Mazda forums, specially the Yank ones. Two or three engines in a 80k car seems to be par for the course.

Crikey. I remember at the time of the RX8 launch Mazda saying that they'd finally worked all the bugs out the wankel engine and the RX8 would be as efficient and reliable as a normal piston engined car.

I also remember reading one of these road trip mag reviews involving an RX8 and a trip from down South to Scotland. After about 600 miles it needed an oil topup after the driver decided to check it in a service station on the way home.

They're nice cars too. If you could get a nice one for £700 and spend £1500 or so trying to fit a normal engine into it, it'd be a nice car for the money.

A mate had one of them new as his company car - had a drive of it and was amazed - felt like a massive torque band as you accelerated. Shame about the engines going pop - I think his did from memory, but they're beautiful cars. Not sure an engine swap would work that well though - isn't the wankel engine very light. Still, I guess with a boat anchor up front would be GR9 for driftin.

Sadly far from the truth still! Wankels were always going to be aviation engines - high volumetric efficiency, and tax-free aviation fuel means their atrocious consumption isn't really a problem. Clearly sounds like a great idea in a small sports car - but so would be putting in a motorbike engine - it's always going to end in tears.

Great looking Princess in a top colour, although I think the guy is overselling the RAW POWER of the E series 6 pot...

Funny the way they always list as Austin Princess or even Morris, rather that going with the pungent aroma of it being a Leyland Princess

Mrs P had an RX8 for a few months. She never got over 20mpg and the oil consumption was nearly as high as the petrol consumption! Plus, it wasn't a straightforward matter to check and refill the oil, so I suspect some people just didn't bother.

I didn't think it drove that well TBH. It felt like a big boomy thing and it had to rev at an alarming rate in order to get any real momentum going. As soon as an independent dealer mentioned that he wouldn't take them in at any cost, she chopped it in for a Mazda 3.
