the pinto & I4 DOHC are two completely different engines.

The I4 also appeared in 16 valve guise in the RS2000.

 

I reckon Ford knew it had a limited life span as the catalyst regs were coming - the ZVH (Zeta ;-)*) had its introduction delayed by this and was conceived as a carburettor engine - but they needed something more refined than the Pinto. Variations of the YBB Cosworth weren't feasible to build for the costs and volumes needed for general use.

 

*Did Ford's renaming of the engine have owt to do with my bad joke about the difference between Westfields/Locosts/etc. and the Welsh bint from the Darling Buds of May? One is Kirk Douglas' daughter-in-law, the other is a Caterham Zeta clone...

i love these, they are just so pleasing to look at, especially the mark 2 version.

 

ok so maybe not as bonny as a minor (does that mean i;m going to ex communicated?)

 

but its still a very nice looking car, and i think one of the best to come out of longbridge

I sort of think the A40 is everything that the Morris 1100 should have been.

 

It has proper suspension, RWD, so north-south engine, propshaft, and diff.  You can work on one, and so can your local garage*.  They even look similar from some angles.

 

(*In Australia, people turned up to their local garages with 1100s and 1800s with their transaxles and funny suspension and were just told to f*ck off.)

I think this high spec Swift is pretty amazing - air con, electric windows all round, electric mirrors - on a small car in 1988?? Lovely car (30,000 miles) and the kind of motor that will never incur major scene tax...

My Alfetta GTS, owned from 1988 / 1990, £180.00; a characterful, sensual and seductive car, but exceptionally rusty, and nothing special to drive. Nor, for that matter, was my Alfetta 2.0 saloon (no pics, alas) swapped for an even rustier Dyane at Big Mikes in Darlington. Nor the Giulietta saloon (no pics, neither) owned in the early 90s, although its slightly smaller size enabled more chuckability.

This should have high levels of #want# - 20 years old, Fiat, rare, good condition, good drive the 1st gen Punto, not extortionately priced. So why does it just feel...meh?
