Because, back when they were current, it was a whole lot cheaper to insure than a 125, and as quick as most 4-stroke 125s, and quicker than a lot of the other sub 100cc bikes. .

Back in the 80s it was the norm to have what was called a “rider policy”, which gave the policy holder insurance coverage for any bike up to a cc limit. From memory, the bands were something like 0-100cc, 101-225cc, 226-400cc, 400-600cc and 600cc+.

I had a Yamaha RS100, and my sister had a CB100N because they were so much cheaper to insure that way. It’s why the 400cc class was so popular around the same time. My first “big” bike was a Honda VF400F in 1988, chosen because of it hitting the sweet spot of the fastest bike I could afford to both buy and afford to insure.

I agree with all those points, even had a rider equivalent policy with Equity Red Star myself in the mid 90’s just before they stopped them, and I think Norwich Union was becoming a different company by then as well (had an FZ600, TDR250 and RD125LC on it at the time)

for myself and my mates the only measure for what you could ride at 17 was how fast it was, insurance cost was a secondary . For me 125LC was the way back then 😁

I even had one guy I worked with think my 125 was an 80 because the 10W model mk1 had RD on the side which he thought said 80

I had  to do a double take there. Thought it was my old one, one of the best cars I’ve ever owned , hopefully doing good service for @mercedade’s sister, these days.

That is fit as fuck , thankfully I'm 110% sure I'm going to be outbid in no time

Hold my beer

Is it easy to convert to RHD? Shirley is just a few bits, pedals, cables etc?

May not be necessary seeing as you won't be doing many overtakes.

I agree L1, fit as fuck. I love the late ones.

I already manage to overtake just fine in my LHD NA diesel Renault Express van, this will likely be much easier.
