Princess 2.2 HLS anyone IT'S BIEGE!

It is with heavy heart that I offer my Leyland Princess 2.2HLS automatic mk3 for sale.

First registered on March 3rd 1982, at I'm sure a hefty discount, "NOG" was quite plushy specified - top of the range in fact being a HLS with the 2227cc E series transverse 6 cylinder engine and automatic transmission BW35. Inside you gained best "burr walnut" esq dash (squint and it still looks plastic), individual front and rear captains armrests and a leather trimmed steering wheel, INTERMITENT windscreen wipers, not forgetting the 3 watts of music power radio cassette! (which doesn’t work!) All trimmed in PAPRIKA VELEOUR, in the requisite shade of CHAMPAGNE BEIGE with a contrasting WALNUT BROWN vinyl roof.

So almost 27 years ago it would have been cutting a dash outside the British Legion club, or whisking its owners away to an exotic weekend on the Frinton Rivera, drawing admiring glances from octogenarians where ever it went. 6 owners on and nearly 27 years later time has been kind, but she is a used car now. I have owned her since 21st of April 2006, a stable mate to my other pageant blue Princess (see aronline.co.uk car of the month May 2008). However the recent purchase of a Rover SD1 2300 (from Torsten no less!) means its all change, time for a new enthusiast to step up to the hydragas. So to get the less desirable points out of the way here they are...

Exterior:

Scabbing to the sills, door bottoms and rear arches as per pictures

Potentially sill will requiring patching in the future at one end

Bumper chrome is loosing its luster - but enough reflection to shave in!

Both rear tyres are old though legal.

Front tyres new though.

All chrome embellisher are present.

Vinyl roof is tired and there is a small tear in offside D and near side B pillar (new vinyl included in sale)

Missing 3 nut caps

Interior:

The radio cassette has given up the ghost so no D.L.T. for the drive home!

The heater matrix is blocked have flushed it twice to no avail.

Ambassador front mats!!!!11!!

D pillar courtesy light broken (new one included in the sale, flying arsehole box and everything!)

Rear seat belts fitted.

Full and looks unsed spare wheel kit!

Mechanically:

Everything at the moment is ok I got my mechanic to tune it and running well apart from the slight blow from the exhaust it runs very smoothly, basically everything works as it should.

Although it missing the thermostat as I thought it had vaporization problems which turned out to be condenser.

Also to get ready for sale I have recently fitted new

HT Leads

Cap

Rotor arm

Condenser

Points.

New fuel pipe with inline filter

Freshly pumped hydragas suspension, with desirable Ambassador displacers fitted (factory fit on these late mk3)

Complete new rack fitted and pressure side steering pipe.

New fuel pump

The last thing I will add as I have mentioned I thought I had an overheating leading to vaporisation problem, and on advice from Landcrab and other Princess owners I fitted a second radiator fan with a manual switch, it not the neatest job but works and was just desperate to cure the problem at the time!

Spares included in the sale:

Full set of NOS water noses

Used radiator

Old carbs

NOS water pump

Air filter box + two NOS air filters

Used but in good condition TRAPEZODIAL nearside head light

NOS rear brake cylinder.

NOS power steering pump

Old cylinder head +rocker cover

As of today it has a fresh MOT with two advisories which are exhaust leak, cracking in the rear tyre, and it currently sorn’d.

Right I seem to have gone on a bit but just trying to be upfront, and I am trying to find a loving home for it lest it end up UNDER A PIANO.

How does £600 sound.

That is just MannTastic. Shades of Ambastardor though with the orangy velours, Champagne Duco and that awful corporate Austin Morris grille badge.Should never have deleted the metallic red crown badge in '78 imo. I do like these - one day, a black Special Six will be mine.

Someone's got to ask it...What's a "Flying Arsehole Box"??

I love those red crown badges too! Used to get every one I could when I cycled to the local scrappys aged 15.Thats ace, I would love it BTW, unfortunatley i'm already at full capacity

No problems Mr B it would have been great if could of had it though!

I'm guessing it's a box displaying the 1970s Leyland "plughole" logo.

Well you're not going to get very bloody far naming your conglomerate after a conifer are you?

Always assumed the Princess was a hatchback from the shape....or was that another piece of BL short sightedness that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Was it this or the Ambassador that was 'built by Roberts'?

:D

Cracking car, hope it sells to someone who will cherish it rather than drive a fake 10 Valve Quattro at it.

I would love that car, Princesses are ACE! Skint though...haven't you had that 2300 for 2 odd years?

Yoghurt spillage ahoy!! Great looking car, super pics Mr Ave. Hope it finds a good home. Sadly I think I wouldn't get one of these past my other half, even if her Dad used to have one when she was a kid (an orange one) .. I think it was an embarassment to her!Mark.

Gah! Too many desirably shite cars for sale at the moment!Do you have a 'stat to shove back in it? Any idea how nasty a matrix-change is on one of these?Do you want an Alfa Romeo? :P

Posted

The back end looks like one of those prototype cars that when you see it, you think 'agh, thank god that never got into production!'My pa had the Ambassador, which was like a blander version of this. Would I be correct in assuming they were the same car?

If only I were on the Mainland-this would be mine, sadly I don't and so it won't so I've wasted your time just now but consider it a free bump. Good luck with the sale.My old man had a couple of these, the second was a brown HLS and it fucking rocked, I was walking down the street one day about ten years ago and I suddenly got a whiff of a smell that took me straight back to the rear seats of the Princess-odd how smells suddenly conjure up the most minor of memories in an instant. The silly twat rolled in under an artic trailer one day leaving me to end up sulking in a smashed up brown Princess in the garage 'coz I didn't want to eat my greens....Ah halcyon days, halcyon daze :D Shite_Meister uninteresting fact 1178: that crown badge, on the bonnet of earlier Princesses, I used to turn the old mans upside down to piss him off=FACT!If a Princess isn't Autoshite summed up on four wheels I'll eat my own arse.

WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT!I've loved these machines for years but I've only ever seen two and I don't think any exist in Canada. Would love to import NOG but don't have the requisite cash at the moment, unfortunately! Will have to own one someday though, and hopefully there will still be some around to be had then...

I can vouch for the sweetness of this, any frillyness is in nice and easy to rectify THOUGH THE LAZY SOD CLAIMS HES SPENDING EVERY HOUR HARVESTING. FARMERS EH  If you a panel man I think a SD1 painted bonnet and tidied sills might cheapen the asking price considerably too

Indeed, the Princess was a saloon throughout it's life only becoming a hatchback when it became the Ambassador, along with diferent engins etc. Totally agree though, pant wettingly fatastic motor 8) I need to get a house with a lonnng driveway methinks

Is it supposed to ride that high up at the rear? Love those front arm rests - those are excellent!

Posted

That is quite lovely, I had a 2200HLS many moons ago, great cars Princesses!

Posted

I am a big fan of these cars, in fact for about 5 years of my late teens/early twenties they were pretty much the only car I would drive! Thats how fuggin OUT THERE I was (and continue to be).

Posted

So have you had a fair few these then Mr B?

If so, I am indeed NOT WORTHY, a TRUE BL HERO

I cannot describe how comfortable those seats are and in conjunction with the hydragas it one of the few cars to give the CX a run for it's money ion terms of comfort anyway.

Also regarding suspension height:

Do you know, the only wedge I had apart from the pant variety was a Wolseley, I had it about 12 years ago, super rare even then. I bought it for £90 with no MOT but a months tax from Margate, it broke down on the way home three times, eventually had to AA'd home, the Hydragas sphere's would go with comic regularity and after about 2 months the engine blew on the M25, I sold it for £400 and wish I'd kept the useless bastard...

Totally random & pointless update but I think I saw this car being driven about near Kidderminster today.

I was proceeding in the opposite direction hence no snappings, but I did utter an audible "phwoar", much to the confusion of my accomplice.

Shit, this is an old post. And I was just contemplating selling a kidney...
