Will Clio be write off? (hidden agenda)

When we were arse ended in the Focus, as soon as I reported it to the insurers, they told me bluntly over the phone it is a write off, and will be collected by Copart the next day, we were in a hire car, a Mokka 4x4 for just shy of a month while the other party fucked around because the old fart who hit us couldn't read or write, it was cut and dry his fault, and we got paid out about 5 weeks after the accident via BACS for £100 more than we paid for the car. The hire car claim must have hurt his insurers.

As others have said on other threads be very careful letting them take it away it you want the car in anyway. I had a car that was to be taken away to be 'assessed', the collection driver phoned me as he couldn't find my house, turns out he was from copart with instructions to just take the car to their yard for scrapping! I did want to keep the car so I told him not to bother and managed to sort it out with the insurance company over the phone, was a bit pissed off they lied to me though, I suppose it puts them in a better position to negotiate how much your car is worth when you don't actually have it anymore.

I've just taken some pictures for the body shop and noticed a loud ticking noise from behind the driver's headlight, it stays on a whike after engine is turned off. I think it is most likely the carbon canister which got broken in the crash as it didn't make the noise before.

Thing to remember when making an insurance claim..... If it's non fault, your premium will increase as a result! Because insurance data shows that you are more likely to go on to have a fault claim in the near months after the non fault.

In all cases it is a requirement that you inform your insurer of any collision, even if it is a stationary item that isn't damaged (I.e losing it and binning it into a curb).

FTFY. I've claimed twice for non fault write-offs and my wife has claimed for a non fault accident. None of those claims led to a policy price increase - even when staying with the same insurer.

Other peoples experiences may differ of course. However its not guaranteed cert that your premium will go up after a claim.

Mate Works as a senior claims handler for a large global insurer. When the ex was getting pissed about by her insurer regarding a payout after a fault accident he advised simply to tell them you want the number and address details of the financial ombudsmen.

Apparently they charge the insurer to look into a case whether they find in your favour of not. Think the fee was about £500. Insurer promptly paid out within a day and I still complained to the FO out of spite as the insurer were tears! :)

As we are sharing insurance stories.........

I had my car broken into on our drive, two windows broken.  Rang up, and those windows weren't covered.  OK, no worries, got some secondhand and all ok.

End of the insurance year, premium went up.  I asked: why has premium gone up.  Answer: you had this incident with the windows.

Lesson: read the small print and make as few claims as possible.

Update; Insurer phone daughter No2 today and told her car will be written off. Apparently the cost to repair would be approx £700 and they valued car at £450 plus the cost of a hire car also physio for her arm. She talked them up to £500 and they said she could take £400 and keep the car, if we hadn't been having the problem with the ECU that would have been really good.

What is good is she had physio for her elbow today and the doctor told her it had got out of alignment somehow, twiddled around with it and gave her some exercises to help it. She says it already does feel better (she had been needing the brace on her arm for work) and she gets some more physio session too!

Now we need them to take the thing off our drive!

She will be upset at the demise of her first car after seven years of ownership!

That’ll definitely be a write off, it’s only worth £500 on a good day and a couple of days in a courtesy car is likely to cost similar never mind body shop rates.

Having a claim for such a pitiful amount is a bit of a pain but I’d imagine the newer car involved will cost a fair bit to fix too.

You can buy a mk3 Clio for £1500 so anyone asking that for a 2002 one is dreaming

I should be an insurance valuer.

Glad it’s sorted though.

Keep the car and Cartakeback for £130 + for them to remove it for your pocket?

One of my workmates and his wife at one point had 7 no fault claims between them, 3 were as a result of the cars being hit while parked, 2 were as a result of being hit by drunk drivers. They struggled to get insurance because of it.

Did they stop parking on a blind bend outside a pub though?

Thanks for the quick reply.

The salvage company collected the car while I was out today, I left the key & V5 under the seat. It looks from the copy of the invoice that they have been charging Direct Line storage for this car since 3rd Dec, cheeky!

The driver posted the V5 back through our letter box without filling in any of it, I thought the trader section should be filled in, am I wrong? Should I filll this in for them (Silverlake) or Direct Line? I want to do this to get the remainder of car tax back.

Update & probably the end of this thread...

Today Direct Line phoned Daughter No.2 to tell her that the physio therapist has confirmed her arm is now much better & likely to fully heal. They also told her she has been awarded £1200 compensation for injury, this despite she has never asked for any and also being told (by direct line on the phone a few weeks ago) wouldn't get any. So a satisfactory outcome for her all in all.

By the way she's loving the VTS despite the extra running costs!

Ask DL to confirm but you should probably be putting the salvage firm’s details on the yellow part of the V5 and posting it (can also transfer to trade online though)

Sorry (and thanks for your concern) should have updated this as well. I phoned DL & they said put their address on V5 & we got a confirmation from DVLA that Daughter is no longer the registered keeper.

It was a bit of a sad end to a car I bought for her seven years ago, but on the plus side she ended up getting a fair bit more than I paid for it all that time ago!
