With the Rover collected, something else has been left in its place as part of the deal.

 

No pics today because dark but updates will take place tomorrow where we shall see exactly how bad it is.

Update time.

 

So as you now know Bramz7 has taken on ownership of my Viking Longboat Rover 820. Which left me in a conundrum. Rarely have I been in a position whereby I have a manageable number of cars in my possession and I didn't intend to start now!

 

Sam found himself with one car more than required so a plan was hatched. Instead of of getting the train to bristol, he would drive the px car to me and take the Rover away.

 

Naturally this was conducted in the pitch black with neither of us test driving the others car upon arrival in true autoshite style. In fairness we were both aware of each cars downsides beforehand.

 

So behold my new Acquisition

It's not without its issues though.

 

Firstly, it's not wearing its 250k well and the bodywork has numerous issues although these are easily sorted.

 

It idles quite roughly and has a bit of a knock when cold although this seems to disappear when warm. I'm betting Engine mount or possibly a faulty injector or Fuel rail.

 

I'll bung Delphi on it and see what's what over the next few days.

Plugged the Delphi in this afternoon to check if there were any fault codes stored - Hmmmm YES!

Most of these cleared but the code for the glowplug and may remain a concern. Think the maf faulty may be a cause of the poor mpg Bramz was getting

First port of call with any car for me with that much electronic stuff on board would be battery off, overnight charge on a good charger, then clear everything and see where you are.

 

All manner of false positives can be triggered by vaguely slightly marginal system voltage in modern cars it seems.

Pretty sure the battery should be ok. As far as I'm aware bramz has been driving it regularly. It's idles quite roughly but rev past 1000rpm and it's smooth.

 

Livedata on Delphi says it's idling at around 650rpm when cold which seems a bit low to me.

 

Going to get the battery tested to see what's what's and then get the maf out check for sensor damage and give it a good clean.

A mate has an identical one on a 52 plate, not a bad old shitter.

All of the engine mounts have been replaced within the last 12 months, so they should be ok.

It had 2x duff glow plugs, iirc it was #2 & #3. It started OK all last winter on 3 glow plugs. It runs a bit lumpy for a couple of mins until warmed up a little because of this.

It is slow to warm up, but the thermostat is just over a year old, so that should be OK. My other 203 take a while to warm up as well.

Brake error, most likely the switch by the pedal, it's a common 203 fault.

Say what you like, but '250k not out' is not to be sniffed at!  It really doesn't seem that long ago that you'd be really happy to see 90k out of your Morris thou/ Cortina etc before the thing carked it!

I asked Bramz this but predictably he's moved it on before getting round to replying :)

 

Can you please tell me, maybe with photos, how the cubbies in the boot are supposed to attach? The left one in mine (hiding the first aid kit) won't stay in place but I don't understand the locking mechanism - it doesn't seem to go anywhere near where it should, but there's nothing obviously broken, no rough plastic etc.

Yep no problem. Won’t be till tomorrow as it’s in my mothersteve79s garage at the moment but i’ll grab some photos for you then.

Having now served it's purpose for multiple tip runs the Merc has now been sold and is off to spend its remaining years in a more sunny climate somewhere in Africa!

 

Now have to find something that'll shift the big pool of oil on the garage floor!
