Cycling North After Winter

If it's only two teeth can you get a needle-nose pliers down there?  I have done this successfully in the past.  Sure it's the chainring and not the chain?  A stiff link in the chain can give a weird noise each time it goes round, you can fix it by pushing the pin out and back in assuming a traditional chain.

It's definitely not the chain. And it's not like there's just two teeth that are at a strikingly different angle to all the others, it's more that the chainring itself is wavy. I'll have another go with the pliers and see what I can do.

Drivetrain inefficiency makes you fitter quicker!

Yes! I knew you'd come over to my way of thinking/the dark side.

I've done some more bending, adjusting, de-gunking and lubricating and it seems to run okay. But that is upside down with little load. I'll take it out in the morning and see if I've fluked a fix or not.

Also, I bought some cheap pan ears yesterday. They're only smallish and despite what the advert said I don't reckon they are waterproof, but they'll do a job.

Well pinch some black bin bags off the 6cylinders and line the paniers then. Also wrap your clean clothes etc in individual bags. My endura bag is supposed to be waterproof, and it is, but it’s not downpour proof so I keep bags to stuff things in inside.

I'm going to be bagging everything up, and I've got a few waterproof plastic boxes for the trailer. No rain will get through.

Tomorrow is packing day, then Thursday is Ferry day. Where did the time go?

Posted

I reckon those trailer tyres will add at least 10 bhp each.

When are you setting off? I can look at striping the front chain set off one of my bikes and sending it to you. But may be a few days before I have the chance.

The man says Thursday. I reckon experimental testing had now passed and it’s all systems go with t minus 36hours.

I've got a maxx daddy on one of my unicycles. Phat!

Thanks for the offer Julian but I'm off the day after tomorrow.

Everything will be fine anyway. The bike will fix itself. Also there's going to be an unexpected Europe-wide heat wave for the next couple of months and I'm going to choose routes that are only downhill.

Aldi i think have £1.49 waterproofing sprays just now. Worked ok on stuff as well. Might we worth a coat on the bags.

Posted

Or coat them in old engine oil ... nothing could go wrong with that!

Posted

Not sure of your ferry route - but Brussels.... my place - details in PM.

Good luck and let us know if you need any help at all……….

Cheers for the Aldi shout. I was going to look for some waterproofing spray today, so I'll head straight there.

FPB7, I have you on speed dial so the first sign of trouble and I'll fire up the yoghurt pots and string. You guarantee to get to me within the hour, right?

Today is mostly going to be consumed with trying to fit a Volvo estate full of stuff into a bicycle trailer.

That's not even all of it.

As Jasper Cricket famously says - 'and there's more'.

I reckon I might need a little bit of a cull.

What are you riding? My old FZ was not the most comfortable thing to comute on in slower traffic, once moving at speed it was fine.

A cross tourer, comfortable enough just damaged over the years. Risers are due.

I can see what is happening in my garage without leaving my desk!

So can I! :-)

On the other hand Mr 6 cyl gain a volvo estate on the fleet!

It's was Jimmy Cricket wasn't it?

It was a joke. 'And there's more' was Frank Carson, so I mashed up the names of a couple of other 70's/80's comedians, like Bernard Monkhouse or whatever.

The Volvo belongs to Tickman as of flipping ages ago. He has allowed me to live in Casa del SwedeBarge for as long as I have needed. He's a good guy.

I think I remember Cricket having a similar catchphrase? 'Come here, there's more' or similar so I missed your humour.

I don't know if anyone's remotely interested in the minutiae of what I'm taking, but I'll post it up anyway as I go along.

First trailer box.

Nobody tell Mrs6C that I have one of her old saucepans.

A few food items and wash stuff on top of there.

And lastly the absolute essentials. Coffee, hair bleach and pink nail varnish.

Maybe you're right. I can't remember now, the seventies was months ago.

He's in Yorkshire, they're still 50 years away from the 70's.
