Over in Canada and the US, the Vauxhall Insignia is rebadged as the Buick Regal and the Astra Mark 5 is.......a Saturn Astra, identical in every way to ours. The Mark 4 Astra is still going but has a weird booted rear end and new front end and available as a Pontiac or Chevrolet whilst the Vectra C was given a slight roof chop and sold as a Saturn. It doesn't look half bad.

Saturns are the real Billy Bob scum brand in the US.

Also, did anything come of some deal involving the Peykan tooling going for further use in Sudan or was that just a wind-up?

Dear catsinthewelder,

Yes there were plans for the tooling to be send out to Sudan, with an additional face-lift to the Paykan, but from my findings the project has been on hold indefinitely, which is a shame since the good old Hunter could have broken the record for the longest production car Ever!...

OK!..... Thanks to all the participants in this Shite Challenge!.... Unfortunately, and despite my relentless efforts to amend the rules, the Rootes Arrow Series couldn't be the winner!

I want extend my thanks to all the Shtie Expert out there for participating though... I will give this Thread a bit more time, so that other contenders can also participate, and then will announce the official winner here.

Can't believe the GM J-car has been missed out.

Buick Skyhawk

Cadillac Cimarron

Chevrolet Cavalier/Monza

Daewoo Espero

Holden Camira

Isuzu Aska

Oldsmobile Firenza

Opel Ascona

Pontiac J2000/2000/2000 Sunbird/Sunfire

Toyota Cavalier

Vauxhall Cavalier

I make that 11 brands, but I can't be bothered picking apart the body formats or deciding whether a longer nosecone comes under a facelift or not.

As long as the floor pressing is the same part, then it's a valid contest Mr Hirst!. IIRC they all used roughly the same engines. My Cav Estate needed rear shocks, and when I found a pair of the air-assisted ones in a breakers, they were badged "Holden-Made in Australia" So I HAD to have them! (Only a tenner the pair, and about 3 quid for the pipework to get them working. Ace things they were. Good ol' GM.

IIRC Cavalier mk2 estate bodies were shipped over from Australia.

No mention yet of the late, great GM T Cars:

Vauxhall Chevette (UK)

Chevrolet Chevette (USA & Brazil)

GMC Chevette (Argentina)

Opel Kadett (Germany) / K-180 (Argentina)

Isuzu Gemini (Japan)

Holden Gemini (Australia)

Saehan Gemini (Korea)

Daewoo Maepsy-Na (Korea)

Buick Opel (US)

Pontiac Acadian (Canada)

Aymesa Condor/Gala (Ecuador)

Grumett Color (Uruguay)

That's 12 brands by my count!

And would be 13 if you included the Bedford Chevanne (van)...

OK... I have a BREAKING NEWS!....

It has been brought to my attention that last badged Hunter was in fact a TALBOT, I believe Hunter was being assembled in Ireland from 78-79, and since Chrysler by that time was not in the picture anymore, they were badged as Talbots by Peugeot!

Can anybody shade some light on this? Not only this makes it the 8th brand that Rootes Arrow body was sold under, but I have yet to find any picture or evidence of Talbot Hunter in existence.

Cheers,

I'm sure Hunter production finished before all Chryslers became Talbots. I suppose it's possible that some dealers slapped a Talbot badge on the bonnet of some remaining stock- but that wouldn't count

I have a vague recollection of seeing a couple of Talbot-badged Hunters around Worcester at PSA-takeover time, but it was probably dealer-driven to shift stock as Alex suggests. Or, more likely, wishful thinking and a failing memory... :D

Never seen a Talbot-badged one - mind you, I don't think I've seen one post-1975 ever, apart from that ex-Metropolitan Police 1978 (on a T-plate) that keeps popping up on eBay.

As an aside, didn't Hunter production move to Ireland earlier, i.e. 1976? I'm pretty sure that Alpine production needed to take place in Ryton (extra capacity to meet demand that Poissy wasn't able to stretch to) - the Hunter went over the water and the Avenger moved to Linwood, which was available due to ceasing of Imp production.

Hunters finished on a 79T plate so were never badged a Talbot. Everything else, Avengers, Horizons, Alpines, Sunbeams were rebadged from late July onwards ready for V plate, apart from the 2Litre which stayed Chrysler.

Cue September 1979 Talbot Price List...no Hunters.

Thanks! That wraps up the Talbot mystery then, if there were any Talbot badged Hunter existed then it must have been the work of dealers.

I was sat at traffic lights and sat in front of me was a citroen berlingo multi-space side by side with a peugeot partner... same car just badged different... i know the renault trafic and vivaro and nissan primastar were all the same...but it got me wondering if car firms did this in the 60's and 70's as well... i have racked my brains and couldn't think of any...

anyone know of any?

BMC rebadged the Morris 1100 as an Austin, Wolseley, MG, Riley and Vanden Plas.

Plenty of other examples from BMC.

In the 70s, Peugeot rebadged their 104 as the Citroen LN, although they did at least fit a Citroen engine.

The venerable Lada saloon was a Fiat as we know, Seat made all manner of Fiats under licence but with different badges. Dacia had the Renault 8 and 12 although I think the 8 was badged Bulgarenault as opposed to Dacia. Am awaiting Mr Bickle to not only correct me but also display a photo of his fleet of Bulgarian built Renault 8’s in response! (Probably)

I think of these only the Seat/Fiat models were built at the same time and again it might have been something to do with Spanish import tariffs and the only way Fiat could penetrate the market.

Iran made a few versions of Renaults and Peugeot’s too. Paykan Hunter is our man here. However like the Lada, Paykan and Iran Khodro built cars from defunct tooling bought from European manufacturers so building versions of cars discarded by another manufacturer might not be fully answering Maxpowers question fully.

Just to add to Parky's list of contentious cars.  The Hindustan Ambassador.  Didn't India buy the Montego tooling and do something odd with it as well?  Like a Montego back end with a Maestro front or am I misremembering?

My favourite of all the re-badges are the Mini ones.  The Wolsley Hornet and Riley Elf are just gorgeous little things.

No i meant like the cars are exact same models just badged by different companies.... my teacher had a renault 12 in the 1970's but i don't recall ever seeing it's dacia namesake on the road at the same time..

If I’m right in remembering the old Mazda 121 was a badge engineered Ford Fiesta. I’m also pretty sure that the modern ford ka is based on the previous model fiat panda, which also the same Chrysler ypsilon (which I think was sold as a lancia ypsilon in Europe)
