I’ve been asked to look at one of these damn things in the next few days, to check it over prior to acquisition etc.

I know sweet fa about them - anything specific to the model I should be looking out for?

Ta muchly

What age? Early ones where I think all 1.8 turbo units, same as the golf, passat,Audi TT and other vag product so any issues with that engine. Generally the early ones where pretty bulletproof from what I've heard. Sorry I can't help more

That's a bit new for you Nigel isn't it?

Early ones are Mk4 golf and as Bub said are the 20VT petrol lump, later ones are the newer diesel lump.

Liggle on here has a newish diesel one and quite likes it last I heard.

Too new for me, mate!

It’s an 07, petrol. Yellow....

Will be the 2.0 TFSi lump if petrol. The better generation of these lumps too. Got the same engine in my TT. Is it manual or automatic?

Mostly a Golf Mk5/Seat Leon/A3/etc, so common faults on them are similar to these. Generally pretty hardy cars though. Some stuff have problems, notably back calipers sieze, bonnet release handles snap and general VAG fobiles. Just makes sure everything works (Aircon included).

Ah, sounds like it's for the wife then ;)

Ta, chaps, seems a sensible winter munter for the lil lady.

I’m trying to persuade her out of her intergalactic s2000 when it’s slippy out there.

Got to be yellow, got to be quick, got to be easy to get repaired ( in case I’m back laid up), got to be ‘ unusual’.

Seems like the possible answer, so I’ll go take a gander.

Google TFSI and oil consumption......I think there was a run of them with piston ring issues.

And EA888 engine cam chain premature wear.

Beyond that I think they are seriously capable cars and a better choice than the Mk5 golf Gti it's based on

Yeah I've got the MK3 TDI, great car. I've driven all the generations over the years and by far the biggest step up chassis and handling wise is the MK2 to MK3.

Briskoda.net is a really helpful forum, quite a few niggly issues on the MK2 TFSI but nothing out of the ordinary for a VAG car of that era, lots of switches and sensors can go.

All VWs with that independent rear suspension and a sporty agenda wear the inside edges of the rear tyres. They then make a sound that generally gets mistaken for a bad wheel bearing.

They have absolutely piss-all in the way of suspension.

I'm not surprised. A work college has a normal Octavia & that doesn't either.

The suspension isn’t an issue. Her daily is the Honda S2000; covering between 1-200 miles every day. Bought on 70k, now around 210,000

But it’s just too dangerous now, for her, on a dark icy winters night.

I’m up to sorting it right now, it’s unlikely I will be when it does get cold.

Thanks for your comments chaps. Sounds a plan. I’ll Wembley over to Kent to have a gander at the weekend.

A friend had a TSFI engined octavia VRS for a few years and it was fine for him. Needed a small top up of oil every now and again, but no more than the ecotec bollocks engine in the Zafira does. Only liked being run on expensive petrol though, with noticeable even to me as a passenger shake at idle on cheapo fuel. Liked to feather it's rear tyres too, he got a kit fitted to fix that after the 3rd set in about 70k, you could hear the drone in the back when it needed doing, he just turned the radio up until the wear got too bad

+1 on suspension too, although when he had that I had the XM so may have been a bit biased

EA888 was later. This should be a EA113. Early EA113 had chain issues too - engine code CCZA but I think they were only ever in the early Golf GTi. This is most likely the BWA which is the best of the bunch.

What about a TT? Admittedly I'm biased as I find the Octavia duller than dishwater. However they're similar money now, with much nicer interiors and a better drive. Same engine and same body platform but smaller, aluminium, lighter and stiffer.

Too small. It needs to be a bigger presence on dark, wet, sloppy motorways.

I've owned my 51 plater for several years now and love it. It's fast, comfortable and solidly built with a massive boot. It's only needed a clutch, tyres and routine maintenance incl. cambelt changes of course. Just done 100k miles and I have no plans to get rid. I've read horror stories about the oil pick up in the sump becoming blocked, with disastrous consequences, so had mine cleaned out just to be safe. Only real niggle is the central locking developed a mind of its own on occasion. I'm told this is due to failure of a micro switch in the driver's door, but I just live with it. Also the pipe to the rear washer has a habit of coming apart in different places..hardly a biggie. All in all a brilliant buy.

Take a drive in one, the one I was in seemed to have absolutely zero suspension travel. I swear you could feel a frozen pea under the wheels. I could not have lived with it and have had some ‘firm’ stuff in the past. Could have been a bad I suppose but was fairly new.

Just remembered I've also had several front suspension components replaced due to wear in the bushes. Check everything for play.

.

Why? Set of winter tyres and a skid pan course would be my suggestion.

Too low, small for her now. When it’s crappy out, she needs a bigger presence.

It can be quite frightening at that height, in amongst the HGV’s, when the weathers filthy.

Bro - Nev - has had 3 or 4 in differing guises, will alert him to this thread, IIRC he didn't have any bother with any of them which is why he kept going back.

He also had a yellow one....

I once knew a geezer who drove an S2000 up through Norway (IIRC) and into the Arctic Circle. For the record the Mk2 S2000 was much improved in the handling department.

I've got an 07 tdi vrs estate and it's great! I like the suspension, not too hard but handles really well. Plenty quick enough for me too and looks smart. Mine had seized rear axle bushes, the tyres have worn on the inside and a damaged door card which I haven't found a replacement for yet.

Initial impressions, seems ok in a modernist sort of way ( really not me)

Goes well, plenty of poke, quiet, dull, boring, safe etc etc etc.

Wife’s happy, so everyone’s a winner. ‘Spect it’ll need loads - list being compiled.

Hey ho

Thanks for all the help/ advice.
