Dutch car magazine Autokampioen held surveys investigating the reliability of many models in the 70s and 80s. With all the talk about dreadful BL products you'd expect them to score very poorly, but no. Owners seemed fairly content with their Allegro and the results were slighty above average, quite close to cars like the Kadett C and Mk II Escort. The only BL model that was a negative outlier was... the Mini, of which the conclusion was that it was starting to show its age, and was outdated in several aspects (this was in 1978)...

Ironically at the same time the Dutch were producing this.

Don't get me wrong I think I would prefer a 46 to a normal mini. But The design, in the late 70's,  was also starting to show it's age too

They'd only stopped making the 33 a few years before, and that was a proper '50s looking design.

Another Michelotti design I think - it has the trademark lip above the rear glass.

I've driven one when they were new - roomy inside with plenty of glass area and good visibility - decent boot. They drove quite nicely - comfortable seats.  Much more professional fit and finish than say an Austin 1300 or Allagro.

Evolution of the Daffodil from (I think...) 1958.

It was. However, Farina also used the rear window lip.

speaking of vehicles I should buy next! I have been informed that OVW445P has gone off to a new home! this is fairly significant, as OVW445P is one of the cars from the original bundle that @dollywobbler and @Zelandeth's TWC and TPA came from, so hopefully before not too long, another of their stablemates will be joining the road with them :) our very own @st185cs and @brummiejon was there to see the handover of sorts and the most exciting bit about this for me personally, is as you may see in the background, John the chap with OVW, has a collection of vintage FX4 London black Cabs, very much looking forward to that, if nothing else! :)

for those curious about this one, I have been informed work has begun on it, or at least the initial strip down! :)

and for future point of reference this was as found condition

its interesting how all of the paint or Gel coat? has fallen off in the intervening years between 2017 and now! hopefully this is where things now improve :)

That will be the paint, gelcoat is the brownish colour underneath.would just be a like of matting if the gelcoat fell off 😅

Get some heatproof paint on that silencer before the salt starts getting spread on the road,a good waxoyling underneath would be a good idea

True. You know, by that time Dafs were no longer an object of national pride, but of ridicule. It was one of the factors why Daf eventually couldn't survive as an independent car manufacturer.

The Daf 600 was the first (production) Daf, introduced in 1958.

Yes indeed - quite an Italian trademark.

Michelotti was born in Turin in 1921  and started an apprenticeship at Pininfarina in 1937 but after WWII he went freelance creating Carrozzeria Giovanni Michelotti.

Michelotti designs tend to continue the rear lip round onto the back of the C-pillar rather than using it as an eyebrow as in the Farina cars.  Apart from looking good - it allowed the rear ventilation to be hidden and I assume keep water off the rear light.

The Invacar uses a similar lip arrangement with it's inverse-rake window - I'm not sure who designed it - but it was clearly following current design trends as seen in the 1959 Ford Anglia - which itself stems from the 1958 Lincoln Continental.

That in turn  was influenced by the 1955 Vignale Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Limousine styled by Carrozzeria Vignale’s favoured designer.... Giovanni Michelotti.

oh very much so, thats very much on the plan of things to do with REV :) although sadly I am not sure if you can actually park a vehicle in front of most land marks these days? I dont think one can drive up to and park outside of 10 downing street for example!

but maybe I can sneak her in front of the gates of Buckingham Palace?  it does not look *too* pedestrianised?
