why can't it be like this today?

Because every lactose intolerant hipster called Stefan would drop dead as soon as he gets a whiff of the exhaust fumes.

VEE-engines?

Boxer engines do it for me.  Not just any old flat engine.  What you want is the looks of a 'H' format

As in BRM's H-16

The BRM V16 makes an incredible sound.  The twin crankshaft H16 sounded different but still impressive.  Both were good looking lumps in a complicated but symmetrical way.

How about the 1905-6 Adams-Farwell, with its 3-cylinder rotary.  That is 'rotary' as in the externals too.

Mesmerising.  So it must be a contender?

That's a new one on me. Remarkable thing.

Many aircraft in the early 20th century used the Gnome rotary radial engine which was similar i.e. the whole unit revolved like a demented gyroscope.

Although this one is up there on my “wow, that’s cool” list.attachicon.gif3C58F807-8B42-438A-AB7E-6F690D4B9640.jpeg

I vaguely remember that from an old car mag around 20 years ago. Was the entire car including the engine not hand made by 1 person in a workshop?post-18002-0-91138700-1533843929_thumb.jpg Ireland I think.

Edit; Just read Flat4Alfas post...……..that'll teach me to read the whole thread before posting, twat.

That is actually scary looking, like something out of Alien or Doctor Who.  Remarkable.

They're impressive things to see static or in video form.

In person though they are like nothing else.

Can't honestly think of anything other than a steam engine that has quite the same ability to draw everyone's attention to that extent. The sound is something you feel in your chest and through your feet as much as you hear it.

I first encountered on heading out of a station on a tour. I'd never heard of the Deltic before that...but it was definitely one of those moments where I just stopped walking mid-step and stared in the general direction of the railway mouthing "what the hell is that?!?" To myself.

What's that, a plastic storage box or something?

Yeah full of the sound of 50,000 self tapping screws being rattled round in it completes the effect.

If we are including bikes then any Vincent twin takes some beating. Just perfect. I nearly bought one for £6k years ago but just couldn’t justify it at the time, it would be getting on for £50k now.
