Mondeo hunting

Going tonight to look at a pair of Mondeo, both Ford main dealer part exes.

Diesel Ghia X estate, has everything, 137k, recent clutch and DMF, supposedly no flashing lights pulls well £700

1.8 petrol base, 56 plate, less miles but these can be prone to the rings going. £850

I'll report back. Possible leaning to diesel estate. If it blows up in 12 months I should see half that back breaking it.

56 plate petrol for £850? I take it they've already told you about the £500 they've left in the glovebox as an incentive to buy it?

recent clutch and DMF

Sounds like the one to go for! Clutches are a big job on these.

Posted

Yeah it was a bit on the high side but all the others I've seen at £5-600 were absolute nails, looks quite tidy though so it will just depend which sounds alright for the money.

I'd seen a 58 plate Vectra 1.8 for £650 but I'm going to leave it a while before I get really desperate :)

Yes the clutches are expensive. I'm acutely aware of that...

I paid 1100 for a very good one with base spec. And I travelled a day for it. No regrets and wish I still had it.

Worth paying extra if it is a good 'un. Most of them are fooked now.

Going to look at another Mondeo Mk2 later, a Y plate Verona. I don't think there is any hope for people like me. I can't stop myself.

Have you thought about doubleyeller’s Mitsubishi? I’d have thought it would fit your bill nicely for a reliable Mondeo sized thing

Ironicay Somerset is a frequent port of call for me but no, I'm a stickler for Fords. A bit like how blindsided Cavcraft is about Vectras I'm the same with Mondeos.

I'll report back what its like. Could be shit, could be OK, its got a full test on as well.

I'll divert Billy's derision by admitting to paying £2k plus a Rover 45 diesel for a seven year old 2.0TDCi Ghia with 130+k on it.

Bought it. Rust free 2001 Verona in Silver on a Y plate for late registration madness. Absolutely immaculate, inside and out. Even got original radio cassette and motorcraft battery. 85k but clutch felt fine, nice and light no judder. Gave £450 on it. Pick it up later in week.

i so wanted another mk2 mondeo but funds were tight, so settled for focus as a daily

But has it got the 'must have' factory option of gaffa tape on the rear bumper? :-D

No. They are complete. No big fuck off gaffa tape creations yet.

Its had the sills repaired at the back however the guy who had it was a professional welder, so they've been done properly and blended in. Its not some patch put on by some MOT station. Probably better I guess as they all go there so the repair might outlast the car.

I was given a tatty Verona a couple of years back, it was a good runner but tatty as fuck. After doing an engine service and recommending it needed a belt change at 100k, she spoke to her dad and he bought her another car and she asked if I would keep the car to cover the oil and filter cost....

She was not interested in it at all even though the bill was only about £60 and dropped the keys & V5 the following day, all smiley as she had a shiny Pug 307 already to run into the ground, god bless parents!....I sold the mondy on for £500!

I really like them...Top buying skillz

First job is to replace the 18 year old Motorcraft Battery. If its left after a short run then tge battery ends up flat as a fart. Seriously doubt the new one will last 18 years.

That needs turning round. Mud Flaps for the win. My Fusion was on it's original battery for 15 years I think.

Arches look tidy...

Bought a new belt kit as well, then should be good to press it into daily service. Plan is to waxoyl the fuck out of the underside about August time followed by a good service.

What a lovely looking car. Not sporty, not prestigious, just nice.

Thus, lovely.

Well, I've got the dilemma of whether to waxoyl the arches and ensure their survival or to polish them in the hope that they remain rust free. Its getting used daily in all weather so it'll be a thorough Waxoyl in all probability. Could buy the tools and DIY the timing belt but my MOT man would do it for £100 labour inc the pump. So for the pissing about I'll leave it to him. Its not an especially difficult job but at the moment time is at a premium.

I've got the same allloys (from when I weighed a Mk2 in a year or two ago) on one of the Focus's's's.

Cheap up norf, innit! That's a great price.

£100 is well worth it to preserve a good rot free Mondeo. Aside from rust, I’ve never met anyone with a bad word to say about these early models. Well bought!

Imagine my joy this evening when I got the Ford 5000 tape player working. I've absolutely no plans to fit a CD player, found a copy of Now That's What I Call Music 1985 to play. Sheer joy listening to Marillion, Brian Ferry, Mai Tai etc.
