David_Ba11sack's Mk1 Renner Trafic love-in

Yup the 1.4 must be pretty gutless. Really only designed for local runs in France by the local baker etc.

My boss was a tight bastard. He got it secondhand from a pig farmer and it was full of shit and straw when we got it. None of the door locks were in place and you could unlock it by sticking your finger in the hole in any door and flicking the lock mechanism.

Quick jetwash inside and out, bit of signwriting and it was in service delivering tellies and white goods to the pensioners of Essex.

Yup - the locks are made of cheese. Mostly useless - manufactured for quiet French towns in gentler times.

Never driven a SWB Mk1 Master but I had a LWB one and the turning circle was appalling - it's the only vehicle I've ever managed to get stuck whilst trying to turn round (and that includes a 7.5-tonne D series with no PAS).

Well spotted Boll. It does look something like that, it remains to be seen how well the roof has been lengthened too!

My mate had this - after it had sat in his garden for 5 years rotting I tried to buy it off him but he insisted on scrapping it.  I loved it - it was ex health service I think - massive by the standards of the time and a really low floor due to the FWD.  Great drive - 2.0 pez I think.

Just realised this was a Master so may not be welcome :(

Yes. They go on a classic commercial policy. Not expensive. I only use them for domestic stuff - much cheaper than hiring a van from time to time as well.

That's great news. Luckily I am penniless at the minute. Unless prices go mad in the meantime I could see me popping my eurochod collection cherry on one of these next year....

I'd say for occasional leisure use I'd get on quite happily with the 1.4....the heaviest thing I would transport in a van would be the odd motorcycle, few of which would be over 200kg...

If you buy a petrol they are very cheap in France. The frugal French favour the tightwad oil -burner.

I imagine a French one would be a bit better in terms of corrosion too? LHD wouldn't bother me, in fact it sort of adds to the appeal....

Typical examples of the nicer stuff...if you go for high mileage prices are much lower. Red van will be ex pompiers these often have tiny mileages.

Well expect they rust much the same - just more to choose from and chances of getting a real sortie de la grange - barn find...

Reckon the continent's your best bet for an early one anyway - can't remember the last time I saw an early Trafic here that wasn't a camper.

Does anyone remember the Turbo Trafic ambulance debacle in the Eighties?

They were binned because they kept catching fire. Not much good if you're inbound scene of an accident and turn into one yourself.

Yes indeed, I think World In Action or Panorama did an expose. Meant to have the performance of a 3.5 V8 Sherpa or Transit V6 without the fuel cost.

You can never have too many Van-Renaults. Easy to work on, most of the front dismantles leaving the 63.7% of the engine at ideal* working height. Just worry about the infinite number of engine/drive-train combinations seeming fitted at random. This "motorbike transporter" till last year  was my FWD 2L diesel with water cooled diff. I've  a workshop manual on CD if you want for free (got it from here http://www.epricehopper.co.uk/)

A water cooled diff?

That sounds a bit WRC CARLOS SAINZ PARIS-DAKAR. What on earth does 34bhp of 2.0 diesel need with a water cooled diff?

Posted

Oh right, it's the 64bhp one? Has it got stability control and an flip-up airbrake too? :D

Spotted this today in Le Tréport. Mrs T was rolling her eyes, but I said this one's for Bo11ox. Has to be done.

So it's got to be a flat front, circa 1982, 1.4 pez. Is that right? I'm very particular about my wants so I get the need for specificity!

Apart from the rong front that one does look pretty good, it's got a proper 'fourgonette baise' vibe to it.

How long before somebody actually bites the bullet on one then?

Living within the LEZ normally precludes me from van buyage, but are pez ones more common in the UK? I see one locally but it's a camper.
