W124 window motor and ongoing troubles.

Hi folks, just thought I’d open up the merc this evening to give it some ventilation, but the n/s/r window won’t move.

There’s a click from behind the panel when the switch is operated but no movement at all.

 

Any Mercedes experts help with a possible cause and fix? I’m not sure if it’s going to be a regulator, motor or even just the carriage has jammed. So experience would help.

Tried using both palms and pushing down on the glass whilst the switch is being operated?

Did that, there’s no feel of anything moving at all.

Well known parts supplier has a whole unit for £100. Will see what body part Mercedes want tomorrow for s laugh! I’m heading over to the dealer to get a definite answer to the balljoint saga.

Hmmmmmm I'd look on the relevant specialist noticeboards - Ive used them for lots of jobs on my Citroens. For example horn not working, check connections and then when still not working take it off and give it a whack...hey presto.

Front passenger window on my 124

is kaput, I'm taking it to have a few bits n bobs looked at by a Benz specialist, won't be done for a while but I'll let you know what the window diagnosis is.

The rear on these coupes (frameless) has an odd serpentine path of opening, I rememberon my old one they were never quite "right" but as they never stopped working completely I never bothered sorting them (HTH)

I have the plans for removing the door cards which I’ll attempt if it stops snowing!

In dealer news, the balljoint is integral to the whole arm, and is £415.22. They are going to quote me for fitting on Monday. When I’m sitting down!

415 + fitting. This and a few other MoT jobs ie exhaust is what gets otherwise nice Merc cars scrapped. Pity

The four cylinder models have separable ball joints at about £30. GSF and eurocarparts both list these for my registration number, but the dealer this morning says they’re wrong and it’s the whole arm- about four bushes and the balljoint. Happily he says it’s only necessary to replace them one at a time not in pairs.

 

What do you all reckon? Two hours at main dealer rates? This will be a £1000 bill at the end I’m sure.

Yes, as it’s now working I expect it is. I do like to exercise the motors occasionally but it’s probably been three months since the last time. I have the ac on all the time as it doesn’t affect the mpg much and saves the cost of another rebuild.

 

It’s Snowing hard at the moment, so I’m not going out to give it a spray now though!

Very true, but I hope mine would be worth £5,000 ish so if the bill gets that high I’ll slash my wrists!

 

I wouldn’t usually go near a dealer, but I’ve not heard from my mobile guy for a month now so don't think he wants to do it.

 

And the other option I have is my Citroen garage who haven’t done one before.

 

It’s the first mechanical problem the car has had since the head gasket went four years ago.

Yes its the 200's and other petrol saloons which will get the chop first - esp if a lot goes wrong all at once - some of these are getting very high in mileage now.

The estates and cabriolets are making serious money even in four cylinder mode. My 320 is on 115,000 now and I’ve done 40,000 of that in six years.

 

The coupes are worth money too in the right spec, which mine probably isn’t being cloth and standard suspension spec, but I love it. And the six cylinder 24v engine is amazing. I think I bought at the bottom of the market as prices seem to be on the up since.

 

The biggest single bill I’ve ever had was for the CX DTR-£1,400! Welding, welding, cam belts and fuel pump overhaul and injectors cleaned ( and that was garage to garage mates rates as Pete implied it was his own car to the diesel specialist). If this one for the merc comes in less than that I’ll be content. I can’t find anywhere listing a book time for the work, so who knows?!

Yup. Lovely cars. I have an 85,000 mile 260 with the old engine. Real fun to own.
