"Do you want to take on my car and I'll keep up the finance payments? Oh and by the way I can't afford to give you your depsoit back, or pay my rent or buy food".

What a fucking div.

I can almost picture the Bright House plasma, washing machine and three piece suite in faux leather in the vendor's house.

I almost feel sorry for him. He's been tucked up with an eight year old Insignia probably bought on guaranteed finance just to please his other half and somewhat predictably it's shat it's box out of warranty.

I know it means the square root of fuck all right now but somewhat selfishly I'm concerned about the survival of probably the only black bumpered, M plate Mondeo base in existence.

Sorry to hear it has been such a faff. Especially as I've been egging on the deal from my comfy sofa.

Is it likely a pro garage would fit a fecked gearbox though?

(the ad has been taken down now to add credence to the story)

I think BI is a bit of an inspiration to be honest. As an observer in all this, like everyone else, I feel a bit sceptical about the seller. But I think I've learned more from BI's incredibly kind and magnanimous response.

I guess we can only hope the Mondeo survives to be appreciated (and that the seller manages to steady his finances).

I must admit asking for a grand to take on his fucked Insignia on the basis that he'll keep up the payments was a bit cheeky.

Can't see any value in posting lynchmob bollocks about what we'd do to the seller.

FWIW I agree that if this is a scam the effort/£ ratio would make it barely worth it.

At the end of the day many people are one big bill from being up shit creek, clearly that has happened to the seller.

Like BI I would probably suck up the loss, thank the lord that I'm not that skint/feckless (nowadays) and tell the man to keep in touch and let me know when he's ready to move it on.

If you want to hate someone then whoever sold this chap an Insignia on finance he clearly can't afford is the biggest villain IMO.

B.I.

Cap doffed at your above and beyond efforts. You tried, and it didn’t work. These things do happen. Red5 surely owes you a pint for your efforts.

Remember, there are plenty of other underdogs with cloudy headlamps patiently waiting out there. They just need finding.

If it makes you feel any better, I recently secured a decent deal online for a mk1 Raleigh Burner which is identical to the one my brother owned in the late 1980’s. I sourced it from France and have just taken delivery of it today. I plan to surprise him with it - he was talking about buying one a while back, but doesn’t have a clue where to begin. Thing is, I feel like a twat in making the effort. The day I sourced it for him, was when the country had proper snowfall. Work was closed, the county hadn’t ground to a halt, and I hoped he’d pop around with his young kids in his Pajero. I even asked if he was working. I’ve made many efforts recently to try and meet up - we only live a couple of miles apart, but never really see one another. But no, instead he posted photos on social media of him, a mate and his family playing in the snow. It’s the way it is.

Sometimes you just need to forget trying to do the right thing, flick the bird and look after number one. Seriously.

The guy doesn't sound like a swindler to me, just a friggin TWAT to whom I would defo be giving a wide berth so as to not get further embroiled in his pennilessness.

I was thinking that maybe we could put him in charge of BREXIT negotiations?

Sorry to see you've been fucked about, what a pain in the ass.

Anyway...

Talking about base models id love one of the jap gt86 base models

attachicon.gifcar_photo_496861.jpg

I remember back in the 1990s Motoring(sport) News carried adverts for rally types for brand new Mitsubishi Evo Insert number heres with keep fit windows,  steel wheels and basic interior, ready to be turned into a rally car and flung through the forests

Edit, they didn't even have a spoiler!

From Car and Driver

the RS must also leave the factory without the standard model's sound-deadening material, trunk lining, anti-lock brake system, rear wing, rear-window wiper, high-intensity-discharge headlamps, and just about every interior practicality, including the vanity mirrors, rear assist grips, and map lights. Even the door handles and side mirrors lack the weight of paint

I think is a proven fackt that the less money you have, the harder it is to make good decisions.

Probably not the right time, but in slightly better news, I have just secured another base wheel trim from Germany on ebay today....I hope it arrives in one piece!

If the clutch goes on it, and he tries to offload it on you BI, just say the words '£25 is my final offerM9'

I don't think he's a swindler - if he is, he's a bloody shit one if he's managed to get away with £50. He's probably spent more than that on texts and phone calls dithering about. Plus you've been to his house haven't you? So he's put himself fully at risk of a half brick through the window and being the proud owner of a Mondeo and Insignia with slashed tyres. You just wouldn't muck about that much for a £50 gain.

So whilst I'd probably put myself down for a £50 loss and move on, I admire you for dropping a few supplies around on the offchance he's actually on his arse rather than just getting all Blakey on us and making a mountain out of a molehill.

He just sounds like someone basically decent but lacking in money and intelligence.

I would message him and tell him you would still be interested in the Mondeo whenever he is ready. At some point it will fail a test or go wrong. No way will someone like that spend a penny on it so hopefully you will get it for scrap money a few months down the line.

Well that's what I would do anyway

What a pain in the arse. Doesn't look good for your dipper or the Mondeo to be honest.

Good on you for trying and being very understanding.

B.I you are what makes this place great, it would be too easy to get wound up but you have instead shown empathy to someone who has found hard times even though it has inconvenienced you and left you out of pocket. My cap is well and truly doffed to you

I've been following this with interest.  I wouldn't have wanted the car for myself but I was a bit excited about it being in the group and probably would have contributed something to a repair fund at some point.

Borniteidentity has behaved like an absolute gentleman and shouldn't feel bad about this.

Seller has been difficult but I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt: when you're that far up shit creek it's hard to think beyond the next meal.  It doesn't feel like a scam to me... but it is of course a possibility.

Chins up everyone.  Learning experience all round.

Posted

Aw man. What a pisser.

Disappointed as we all no doubt are, I think it worth congratulating Bornite for his sterling efforts and magnanimous response to all this.

And hey, the sale's not entirely fallen through - just delayed indefinitely. If and when blokey gets himself sorted and decides he's in a position to move the Mondeo bASe on, then there's something of a debt of conscience owing - I'd hope (maybe naively?) that he'll do the right thing and get back in touch.

I admit I've been as gobby as others on here in slagging the vendor, who seems to have a curious concept of when one ought to advertise one's car for sale (hint: usually when you're prepared to exchange money for it right there and then) - but in fairness, I've also been in that desperate position when a series of unfortunate events left me with a fiver to last a week and having to borrow money from people for petrol to get to work (and no, nothing on tick either). It's horrible, and the feeling of utter desolation is something I wouldn't wish on anyone.

I'd agree there's more chance of this car eventually ending up within this fold if the game is played long and gently, rather than going round and battering his door down with a mucky spade. So fair play, BI. It's been instructional for us all - truly the actions of a gentleman.

The Insignia could well be from one of these 'guaranteed finance at 34.967% APR break your kneecaps if you miss a payment' sort of places. One hiccup from that Mondy, and he will bridge it, to him it's just some old banger I feel. Shame, onwards & upwards, and block his number for the sake of your sanity

Its for a Sierra Mk1, it's grey as well, posted in the evilbay tat thread, couldn't find BI's Ace of bASe Sierra thread, so a quick heads up in here, it's missing the stick on chrome & rubber insert, but does deffo look like the real deal

It sadly has been a comedy of errors from day one. Sad that this could well be the very last bASe Mondeo saloon in mk1 flavour, but what can you do eh? We could concentrate shite eforst into the Ace of bASe Sierra, I'm keeping my eyes peeled on evilbay for mk1 Sierra bits & bobs. Base flavour cars from this era are almost on a par with dodo merde, and shockingly today I saw a left hand drive early Pugrat 505 in bASe flavour, only a driver side mirror, it was on French plates, and the no right hand mirror must make driving it in the UK a bit awkward. Not the sort of car you expect to see on an old council estate in Felixstowe, and it was tramming it a bit in the 30 limit, which every bugger does, even the buses do between 35 & 50 round the estate near the park (sorry rant over)
