Stolen 2cv

Bugger on that Ghana car.

Well, there will be quite a few frogs to be kissed I'm afraid.

I had a look on eBay and one could source the parts from there without buying an entire Döner car.

Apparently you can get parts for these like water!

If they weren't bloody Shitruns, I'd be tempted to take one on myself...

Tricky bit is ensuring a good 12v feed that won't get interrupted. Not many hiding places in a 2CV (well, I can think of a couple, but I'm clearly not going to hurl suggestions around!).

Some trackers (like the TK104 type) have internal rechargeable batteries that will last for quite a while (or so I've read - I haven't actually got round to buying one yet).

I herewith donate space in my back garden for reassembly. It's not even five miles away. There is space for the car plus a donor car.

It is secure and I bet the right number of shiters could put it back together there within a couple of days.

She should start getting that shit together irrespectively of what the arsefucked insurance says or does.

Edit:

For the fellow Shiters wishing to participate:

- Teas, coffees, bickies, sandwiches, soups and such like are available at The Junktowers® free of charge.

Needless to mention that this offer stands permanently, irrespectively whether there is a 2CV to rebuild or not.

- All necessary tools are here. This includes equipment to fashion wiring in better quality than what Shitrun deemed sufficient and a hammer.

(If you can't fix it with a hammer, you have an electrical problem)

- Participation in a visit to the eclectic and infamous GGG Headquarters© for afters is voluntary, but not optional.

- For those pitiful sods arriving from that South, or - God beware - abroad, Junkparents approved lodging can be arranged for reasonable rates.

- The Junktowers® are located in a strategic position to access a perfect infrastructure catering to the niggly bits required in rebuilding a car

   nobody has thought of beforehand.

Are there any stupid questions?

There is a chance that the Ghana 2CV was made in nearby Dahomey, there was a CKD assembly in Cotonou in the 60's and 70's. Would be a shame to brake that raritiy if it is the case. VIN plate should tell.

That's all hypothetical bollox anyway.

Each and every 2CV in existence today is a Ship of Theseus anyway.

So much for being concerned whether the example in question will be the same car after the rebuild.

The philosophical aspect of this?

Discuss.

Give me a moment, need to google "Ship of Theseus" first.. was that a car ferry?

Roughly equivalent to Schrödinger's Cat in my book.

I think my car and trailer combo should be renamed 'Ship of Faeces'

See also "Get it somewhere safe before it gets lifted and taken to a secure* Copart establishment" whilst whatshername dithers.

Security is tight at Junkman Towers I've heard.

You can buy pretty much everything you'd need, so it's a question of funds and time to rebuild. No point hacking a loom together as I believe you can buy new (something I should have considered with mine). A donor car might be useful for all the fasteners and little trim bits, but I wouldn't consider one essential. I have quite a stash of little bits and bobs (albeit considerably raided after rebuilding a Dyane engine and an entire 2CV).

I'm sure I saw a horrid pink 2cv on facebook either shite cars for sale or autoshite being broken for spares.

Just keeping the thread active really. I’ve been writing my CCC column this morning - still am. And the parts taken are very odd now I’ve examined the photos better. Yes the whole interior is gone, panels lights and bumpers etc. But the alternator hasn’t gone, the air box and washer bottle are there, and the sill trims are still in place, but the hubcaps have gone. The boot latch catch is still there but the front and rear door plates have gone. The whole dash has gone and the sound deadening. Fuse box cover and fuses gone, battery obv., but the starter motor is still there. The exhaust but not crossbox.

Clare thinks the wheels and engine were only left to keep the shell mobile and push it into the street.

I would really love to get to the bottom of who is carrying out thefts of this nature - lots of older cars seem to be vanishing, and we can only guess why most of the time. Export, parts, ringing, mindless TWOC, banger racing, weighing in? It hurts even more thinking it may be people in our "scene" whatever that me be, that are removing much loved cars.

Can't help much with the 2CV but I really hope the lady consents to have it rebuilt, otherwise the scum win.

On the bright side, at least the main components are still there - the chassis, engine, gearbox, body shell - enough to be able to attach the other bolt-on bits onto it without a major drama or it becoming an issue with the DVLA. Is the hood still on it?

No hood, no glass. It still has its identity as what is gone is just parts. But probably £8 to £9000 worth incl painting.

Rear number plate off but in the car oddly.

This took a lot of time - it takes me about two hours to remove a rear light unit.

Stripped indoors? Front plate comes off with the bonnet but throw the rear one in the car before rolling the remains back out.

If it was found shortly after being dumped it would have been missing for 4 or 5 days, but I don't know if it was sat around under the tarps waiting to be found.

Is there a suspiciously large amount of 2cv parts being sold by someone on eBay, who lives in the general vicinity of where the car was stripped?

Posted

Not yet. And about 500 people are looking!

Yes, but why waste time removing the rear plate? It wasn’t broken just unscrewed- and they took the screws!

Not yet, and everyone is looking out for them.

I could transport the car to a suitable destination for repair around the Manchester area subject to the width of a Dolly track.

Inside measurement of my trailer runners is 35". Would the Dolly fit?.

Also; if it's "not going to be the same" then use teh insurance moneh to make it really different:

Because the plate easily identifies the car while they push it away from where they stripped it.

A smart criminal wouldn't bother with this. Do you think they put any more thought into it than that? I don't. I wouldn't be surprised if they just dumped the screws (and maybe some small 2CV specific bits) on the floor wherever they stripped it.

An odd thought has occurred... is the stripped car that was found actually Clare's car? Could it be a ringer for her car that has been made up to look like it and the real one is in fact still all complete, hidden away somewhere with a new identity? We're all assuming the 'found' car is the stolen car, but it is possible that it isn't? Not sure how easy it is to change plates etc. so this suggestion could be rubbish, but stranger things have been known...

That seems a bit conspiracy theory to me. I'm sure the police checked the VIN/engine numbers against the V5.

Most 2cvs only have an engine number.

No the vin is on the bulkhead plate.

And yes, it’s definitely her car. Ken hanna red lead painted the floors and boot to protect from rust after the chassis change.

Fair enough, it had just struck me as a way to swap a parts car for a whole car quickly and easily, lobbing said numberplate in the 'found' car as part of the procedure... then while everyone is chasing after dodgy parts being sold, the stolen whole car quietly assumes a new identify while no-one is looking.

Has the SOCO gone over the car with their box of tricks to find fingerprints etc.?
