From the perspective of someone who works their car for a living, in my opinion the Mk4 was "Peak Mondeo."

I've been watching lots of videos from Alan Howatt on YouTube; he's a mechanic for a taxi firm that runs 100 Mk4s as minicabs, dozens of Mk3s as rental cars, and an increasing number of Mk5s.  He thinks much the same thing.    His channel has loads of interesting videos of various jobs being done on Mondeos.

Has anyone cleaned up the rear door central locking motors? I gather its a common problem that they gunk up and stop locking the rear doors, which is what's happening in our n/s rear.

I gather the fix is to take it apart and drown it in contact cleaner.

Has anyone done this?

I should because in the winter mine seized.

I had one fail resulting in an incident that involved extreme violence.

My mechanic said it was a pain in the arse to fix.

Noted, thanks.

I'll have a poke around anyway, if it's PIA it might get farmed out.

We don't generally need locks until Wifey works in Liverpool again.

From another forum very similar to this one and a timely reminder to get your central locking fixed!

I was doing the overnight shift for Frank, just me and the oppo, and it was quiet so I told the lady oppo that I was going to have a kip in my Mondeo for an hour. I parked at the side of the office, turned the taxi radio off, reclined my seat and lobbed Classic FM on at a low volume.

My slumber was disturbed by the NSR door being flung open and a couple of scruffy arseholes getting in telling me that the girl in the office told them to get in my car. Obviously, I lock my doors when having an in car siesta bit my Mondeo had non functioning central locking on the NSR door.

Somewhat annoyed that the oppo had told them I'd take them when I clearly stated that I was having a sleep, I drove them the mile or so to the dingy ground floor flat they wanted to go to, it was the usual former shop converted into accommodation by a slumlord. They pay me, exit the car, walk over to their front door, go in and I see them through the window after turning on the light in their front room.

I start to drive back when I realise that my trusty iPhone 4s is missing! The little cunts have robbed my mobile! I spin the car around and thrash it back to their gaff. Their living room has only net curtains and I can clearly see them examining my phone and trying to unlock it. As I now had proof of theft they'd waivered their rights to be given the benefit of the doubt so I surveyed my forced entry options. Putting their front window through and jumping in was considered but it's a double glazed unit meaning I might take some time getting in. I turn my attention to the front door, bingo! The front door not only was weak but also showed the signs of being forced open before, probably by a dealer wanting money.

One hard charge and it flew open. The lads inside shit themselves wondering if a local grafter they owed cash to had decided to pay a visit! I storm into the living room and grab my phone. minus its case for some reason, off the arm of their flea ridden sofa and scream at them "why the fuck did you rob my phone lads?" They protest that they "found" my phone in my car and were going to hand it in to the police, a likely story.

I walk out, get into my car and now being fully awake, go back to the office for a coffee. I walk in to see the lady oppo looking worried. Her side of the story was as follows, they'd asked for a taxi but she'd refused to let them have a cab as she'd heard them talking between themselves in the waiting room about the gun they had on them!!! After the knock back they'd started to walk but seen a taxi at the side of the office with a driver in it so tried their luck opening a door and struck gold as that was the door my central locking didn't work on. As I wanted a kip I'd turned the taxi radio off so the oppo couldn't warn me!

With the benefit of hindsight, I'm pretty sure even Evil Warren would've had second thoughts about raiding their flat over a mobile phone and I'll admit my arse went squeaky when I heard about the firearm! Obviously, I played down this to the oppo and Frank when he heard what I had done.

I’ve got a bit of a ‘blowy’ noise, initial thoughts were the combined flexi-cat. But checked this today and it’s fine, think it could be a slight split in the air box round the turbo, if it is I’ll live with it. To get that out you have to drop the subframe out. No effect on the performance. Only other bother is some noise from the back which is the tyres.

Had a bit of trouble with slightly lumpiness low down round about 1500rpm. Cleaned the MAF, didn’t make any difference so cleaned the EGR out, didn’t take the full unit out as it’s a bit of a pig, just cleaned the actual valve that’s meets the big steel pipe that runs from the Dozer. Seems to have improved it 90%. Need to do about 80 miles of motorway work in it this afternoon so hopefully that’ll help.

Blank it off.

It's not too difficult to remove, one bolt is a wee bit awkward and requires a cut down Allen key to remove.

You can see it in the bottom center of this pic.

Feels a lot better from a motorway blast They don’t actually give a lot of bother on these to be fair, just a pain to remove. Not like the old 2.0 Duratorq, you were cleaning those every couple of months.

Pointless, a bit like the 2.3 petrol. I’d get the diesel.

I don't think anything can quite beat the 2.3 auto for sheer 'thirst of a V6 performance of a 2.0' futility. :-D

At a push I’d have a 2.0 petrol. The early 1.6 would be dire, I’ve got a Focus with that unit in and it’s err... leisurely. One to stash away though in the mould of the almost extinct Sierra 1.3. I know the 1.6 Ecoboost would be quicker but not by half enough.

I’d have a Mk5 but I only pay thousand quid or whatever for them, so by time they’ve got to my level then it’s bye the bye. You have to bear in mind a lot of Mk5 Mondeos cover some big miles, things bound to go wrong.

Once all the Mk4 disappears I’ll move on to the Mk3 Focus diesels, not that much smaller in the real world. Could have had one a few weeks back, needed a new rack, 13 plate for £800. They seem fairly troublefree, so it gets my vote.

Which is the engine of choice on a Mk3 Focus and Mk4 Mondeo?

I parked my mk4 for the last 7 months. Basically I got a cheap A3 2.0 tdi S-Line and I’ve been abusing the hell out of it for 7 months. The A3 is pretty much a decent wee hot hatch sort of thing.... and I’ve very much enjoyed hooning around in it. Unfortunately its mot expires at the end of August. The Mondeo has had the odd run out when I needed to use the transporter. MOT is now booked and the big Mondeo will be pressed in to full time service once again. It has a dodgy tail light at present which needs sorting... wiring issue rather than a blown bulb... pics of its last run out collecting a car for a mate.

That depends on your use case.

Mk3 Focus the revised 1.6 8v diesel, that said everyone gets their knickers in a twist about the 1.0 but there’s loads out there running no problem. Back of many peoples minds will be the wet belt going but it wouldn’t worry me.

Mk4 I would say the 2.0 or 2.2 diesel.

I have a 2.0 petrol and really like it. It's not the most economical thing (about 34mpg) but very quiet and the performance, whilst not stellar, is quite adequate.

I had all kinds of DPF issues with my V70 and as I'm no longer doing the business miles or long trips to make a diesel worthwhile or keep it healthy I  decided to have a break from them and get something reliable, which the Duratec engine has turned out to be.

Just bought a 59 plate, Mondeo 2.0 diesel, zetec, saloon with the powershite gear box. 104k on clock.

The gearbox works, so thats a plus.

Fan control module is knackered and just fitted a new battery.

What a bloody faff. What is it with moderns?. Had to remove the MAF and airbox, just to take the battery cover off.

Mrs CSW hates it. No lower back lumbar support gives her chronic back pain.

Jury is out if my back can handle the seats.

Do really like it though. A very good 'an car'.

Mines a Zetec and it's got lumbar support, drivers seat only though.

Maybe find the seats from a higher spec model and try those?

Mk4 front seats can start to collapse and "self recline" in as little as 80,000 miles.

Looks good. I wouldn’t whittle about the gearbox, if it’s good then it’s good. Probably worth checking if the belt has been done 125k or 10 years.

Enjoy changing the fuel filter and the oil filter on those Euro 4 engines...

I find the seats quite nice. 2.0 diesel Zetec. Maybe my back is a different shape to Mrs CSW?

I think I'm going to have to get the ForeSkin ForScan software.

I have the EML light on, no codes on my scanner.

A bit of smoke and a smoky smell, and occasional traction light, though I believe this can be caused by tyres not quite being up to pressure?

Anyway I also believe the above symptoms can be caused by injector woes. Including traction light for some reason...?

Probably. Her back is quite particular about car seats. MGR ok. Honda ok. Fords a big no. BMWs a big no. Mercs ok. VAGs ok. Vauxhalls are model dependent. She suffers from crumbling vertebrae.

Sadly I've got terrible back pain today. Hoping its a coincidence.

Fan control module turned up today, so will get that put in tomorrow, then MOT Monday.

So the EMIL light is now telling me it needs an oil service. Its only just had one.

I've just dipped the oil, two or three weeks post oil service and the level is really really high.

This, I understand, means the oil is diluted with diesel.

Is the Dpf still trying to regenerate? Didn't this happen to you @wuvvum?
