AS Communal MK4&5 Mondeo Thread

Turns out I’ve been abit lazy with the old maintenance for the racing mondeo. 
 

It’s mot is due in the coming month or so theres for today was the “pre mot” checks 

 

brakes all round 

a shock absorber 

2 tyres :( 

a backbox

Never understood why people submit a car for a ‘pre MOT check’? In effect you are paying for two MOT’s. Stick it in for the test and do the necessary, most places will do a free retest anyway on the fail points anyway.

I've no evidence the powershite box has ever had a fluid change.

So contacted Ford dealer.

Scary. They didn't know the box needed a fluid change every 3 yrs / 36000 miles.

Not filled me with confidence.

340 quid which is in the ballpark of what I was expecting.

Because they can then plan the timing of the repairs. If it failed, they'd be in the shit gettingbto.work legally

I’d be inclined to leave be if it’s been in there years.

Fair point. You can usually spot yourself the obvious stuff that would be a dangerous fault.

I didn’t, I did this myself. 

 

I just hadnt bothered actually looking earlier this year.

Fair point. Prompted me to check when my MOT runs out, turns out it’s next month. Can’t see anything obviously wrong apart from a loose front seat, not the bolts but the back rest bolts. The T55 bolt was impossible to get at with the seat in situ, loosening the seat and tightened the head on the bolt with a pair of grips. I’d have had to strip the seat runners to get to the head of the bolt otherwise.

So. Went to a local indy who has a good rep with auto boxes

Me : Ive got a Mk4 Mondeo with powershift gearbox

Him : 'looks scared'

Me : I need a fluid and filter change on the box

Him : We did one once ... long pause .... it did not end well. Dont want to do another. Sorry. Have a good day.

So, looks like it might have to be a dealer job :(

It is. But I really like the car. Box will go bang if it doesn't have its fluid changed and might go bang if it does.

Find myself in a bit of a bind.

Somebody got burnt 😂

To be fair to the garage there (without knowing what happened), Most folk only take autos in when they're acting up, hoping a fluid and filter change will fix it. Could well not actually be on them if they did one and it failed instantly.

I am led to believe dealers farm these out to autobox specialists.

Thats what I thought.

Maybe @Mrcento is right. Most people only take the car in when the box is already knackered, so that gives the trade 'the fear'.

Just back home from 2 weeks in the UK.

My 13 year old Ford Mondeo did it with ease,despite England's crumbling roads network,the "fuel crisis" and me clobbering a rock at the side of the road and destroying a tyre in the process because some bell end in a Peugeot wouldn't give way(made all the more difficult owing to the fact I'd just loaded and was on the way to the tip with an old and extremely heavy washing machine)then having to pay through the nose for a hankook tyre!

£122!!

Although I'm extremely thankful that I got away with just a tyre and no other damage, apart for the wheel rim getting a small bit of damage. 

It's getting on a bit now,it clocked up 300,000km on the way to the ferry,and did another 2500km by the time I got home,so I'm thinking of replacing it, but I'm fucked if I know what with?

The mk4 mondeo, the perfect car?

For me it seems yes.

Just a shame I can't find another 3 year old one and run it for another 10 years😆

So Wifey's hatchback has failed to regen twice again, distance since last regen over 1270 km. 2 failed attempts, oil deterioration light on again. 

I'm starting to get bored of this now, I just want her to be able to commute without faff.

She's been doing good milage in it too.  What are the specific conditions required for regen?

Could there be underlying conditions or issues I've missed?

It would be advisable to replace the top bearing for the shock too,as they can get rather corroded  in there.

New genuine ones from Ford aren't that expensive.

This. They are prone to wearing out every 80k or so.

That could explain the clunk coming from the front suspension in Wifey's car.

Could be the MAF. Don’t discount the fact cheap eBay special MAFs frequently don’t work.

Is there a way to test it, could I unplug it and run it for a while to see if it regens.

I suspect the fact that we rarely drive above 2,000 rpm might have something to do with it?

Rpm makes no difference to the DPF regen, it’s dependent on the driving conditions, load and how hot the car is. Obviously driving in 4th at 70-80 will do this but it’s not solely dependent on the RPM. 

You could clean it but they’re a very common fail point. For some reason it is failing to complete a regen. Have you checked the pipework and the pressure sensor on the DPF?

No I've not checked the pipes and pressure sensor only that the pressure values seem normal to me. 

It can regen, it did last month, only this week is failed twice. 

She's at work until tomorrow evening so I'll know more when I can stick it on Forscan to check.
