Outside the car.

Mmm. Toasty.

Pity you can't turn the heater off!

I ended up with the guage at 95 F and had to open a window!

Oddly enough, I followed a plough for a bit last night. The road had already been gone over by a plough and it didn't seem to be making any improvement! When it pulled over, the road was exactly the same - compacted snow (which is at least slightly more grippy than the fluffy kind it seems).

Unlike lots of seemingly uneducated people, I can't complain about the highway services. I mean, the snow fell so quickly yesterday that there's nothing you can do unless you at least treble the number of ploughs and gritters. Did spot a Nissan Terrano fitted with a snow plough at one point. DIY road clearing!

I'm grinning 'cos I've just been out for a drive around some OMG SNOW KAOS North London to pick up a small ebay purchase in a 40 year old RWD "Herald drift yO" weapon. The roads are pretty quiet and perfectly passable. Came up a hill that Mrs Seth witnessed as totally impassable and blocked by sliding cars yesterday when there was only an inch of the white stuff compared to the 3" plus there is now.

I would love to be able top go properly quick on the stuff in some controlled kind of environment. I guess the Scandinavians probably have some snow base rally schools or something.

Agreed. I've ignored the ignorant bullshit for too long. It's just irritating now.

Completely lives up to the stereotypes of the USA.

or is this yet another example of the many wonderful competently-delivered tax-funded services they render? (cough) I'll bet there's 1000 gits with private trucks who'd be oh-so-pleased to be paid to plow for hire, and then pay taxes on the income thus garnered from the road authoties, but guess that makes too much damned sense........ Best to keep slip-sliding and squirming helplessly like Burma in monsoon season.

Norm, why don't you take your interfering ways, your inequality, your racism, your religious fundamentalism, your intolerance, your stupidity, your obesity, your nightmare-ish free-falling economic system, your president murdering habit and all the other shit that goes on in the US that we don't moan at you about and FUCK OFF!

Probably more stongly worded than I would have...but sorry Norm, they do have a point!!

That guy was a prick for not going out to help though

Sorry, but if you don't know which wheels of your car do the rotating job, you don't deserve help! Or a licence for that matter. I observed 4 people pushing a 4x4 up a slope today with its front wheels spinning wildly. I just drove around them and shook my head. Am I a prick? :P

i find that a lot of drivers have no idea what to do when they get stuck in snow and ice.

its their fault, totally their fault and i have no guilt when i drive past them

Listen to this guy ejaculating noisily with every collision. When it cut back to the studio I expected the newsreader to be wiping her face.

what do you mean?

nope!

and i hope you were in the lada!

Oh yes.

I've just thought though, the '4x4' was actually a Nissan Qashqauiuiui or whatever they are called. Do they even have 4 wheel drive or diff lock?

Posted

I don't think they are all 4x4 and they are useless anyway. I once saw one stuck because it had two wheels on a grass verge.

Most are 2wd, although 4wd is available - not with diff lock though

the vast majority are fwd, think of it as a high riding but squashed roofline almera, but with the build quality approaching its master the renault megane.

I dunno. People don't know about cars anymore, not unless they are into cars. Cars are just utensils. Get in and drive. Back in the day there was a lot more maintenance etc to do that meant you had to know at least the basics, these days you can't even hear the engine half the time let alone know what its doing!!

There's a guy in the 2cv forum world who will often reply to "my car failed its MOT on washer fluid/a dodgy tyre/badly corroded reflector/etc" type threads with a standard reply of "But you check those things everytime you use the car, don't you?" And while he's right, we should, I wonder how many of us do?

Lets face it people don't even have to remember to get the thing serviced because a little spanner will flash on the dashboard and then you pay a man to sort it out.

We live in a world where car's are throw away utensils that are used 'til they break/ or get boring and for most the only time anyone pays attention to the safety features is at the yearly MOT test and even then you just pay someone to sort it. Why the heck would anyone who pays that much attention to a car know which wheels are driven?

I have no idea which way my washing machine spins.

I'm not defending the mindset described above, just saying what I think the problem is.

I do think she should have guessed letting the car drive itself was a bad plan though!

as cars always have been treated!

you do get basic car maintenance as part of the driving test, its been part of the cbt bike test for years, maybe folk used to do work on there cars because they had to ,points, grease nipples and service intervals were much shorter . moderns and servicing if you buy right are cheaper than ever.

whats going on here?

RWD BMW 1 series - snow chains on the front.

ahh right - didnt realise they were snow chains - looks like a bin lid clad on the front wheel

Louise2cv: i think your right

a lot of drivers dont even own their vehicles these days, let alone maintain them

i watched a man in a petrol station this morning spend a good five minutes (while i was getting petrol, paying for it , and walking back to my car) pondering over where to put screen wash in his alfa

if it was a woman, i might have helped (being chivalrous rather than sexist) but i just got in me car and left, i have no sympathy for someone who has never refilled their screenwash

That's what I'm getting at really, new cars allow you to do nothing and get away with it....

.... until it snows

Those things on the beemer are "snow socks", fabric "snowchains" really. Very easy to put on and the difference between Matt getting home last night and sleeping at the nick! So he's a fan!
