What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I went to the tip with a load of kitchen cabinets, and I also had a small plastic box with a lid on it which was full of old tiles - it was just the closed thing to stack them in. Finally, I had polystyrene.

So i shouted over to ask which skip the polystyrene went in, and the guy wanders over and just has a mooch through my stuff - no problem, just near closing so he looked bored. He got as far as the box and asked if he could take the lid off - "yes mate, it's just tiles - why on earth would you have to ask?"

He reckoned that most boxes with lids on are full of porn, so they've learned to avoid embarrassment by asking first. And then taking them into the office.

I've tried. Mine doesn't fit in the merc's boot at all. Sans wheels it's still too long.

Fast forward past the first 10 minutes (a thinly-disguised advert for someone ruining people's summer hols by renting them an AAA pass to the recovery truck, sorry VW camper) and there's a J4, some Airstream motorhomes (never knew they did them?), classic/shite caravans, a Ford Thames and loads of old Bedfords (CA & CF) - shite heaven!

In another thread, I may have mentioned arguing the toss about a £25 insurance admin fee.

It's possible that it may have a silver lining though;

A couple of months ago, I cancelled my T2 insurance with company A & took it out with company B

Reading through the small print of the policy revealed that instead of the promised £3,000 worth of contents insurance I had just £800 with exclusions for stuff like iPod/ipad etc. Although it would cover up to £400 worth of CD's!

Fucking useless, so I rang up, accused them of miss-selling and went to the ombudsman. I cancelled & told them to send me proof of NCD.

Went back to Company A after a gap of a couple of weeks and they provided their own proof of NCD.

In theory, for my £25 I now have an additional 5yrs NCD, I've certainly got a letter showing my entitlement to it.

I'll put it to the test in the next couple of weeks when that Y10 comes to the Mid Lands.

...and more insurance fun today with a renewl notice from Aviva...

944 - £210

Scirocco - £210

Quote me for a Lancia Y10 then please love,

You guessed it - £210

Admiral came up with

£182

£156

& £92

...fuck knows!

Not sure if grump, because idiots, or grin because you knew this was going to happen.

Two days ago, the paper counterpart of a plastic card driving licence ceased to be an official document. Actual paper licences still work, but counterparts do not.

Mrs_Pillock hired a car at work today. Guess what the department that deal with hire cars asked for. Can you guess? Can you?

Cue email telling them how to do their job. I can't help feeling its more the DVLA at issue though, hardly been communicated out at all.

Is my birthday today, the plainly fantastic Mrs_Lobster got me a picture of my mota...

image.jpg1_zpscgokbylp.jpg

I came across the guy who did it last year at La Vie En Bleu and spent a load of time admiring the pics he was selling. In the end I came away with a couple of his postcards - R5 and R16 which have been sat on my desk for the last twelve months. Unbeknown to me, she contacted him and asked if he'd do a nice big pic of my van and its absolutely superb.

Well chuffed indeed.

Just caught an episode of Salvage Hunters where Suggs and that strangely fit-yet-boring lass plus a couple of others restored a Shelvoke Revopak dustbin wagon.

If Autoshite did TV, it would be that. None of your sob stories, endless roadtesting of vaguely related cars or massive budgets - a fucking Shelvoke Revopak. And Suggs.

Just been to the utterly brilliant Eckington Classic car Show at Renishaw hall here in Sheffield. A great mix of stuff from Renault 16's to Lamborghinis. It's an annual show with all proceeds going to local charities.

Even better was I went with a mate and his young lad of 8/9 who knew what the correct alloys were for a Mk2 Golf GTi, which MInis had the large central speedos and instantly recognised an old MG TC, top lad.

It's reassuring walking around these shows that our hobby is in safe hands going forwards, there are kids that could be sat doing laps of the nurburgring on the computer but are instead lavishing love and honing their skills on E-reg 1.0-litre Micras. The future is bright...

Just had a freebie from a theatre company whose vans I maintain . That was nice enough but they mentioned me in the special thanks bit of the program . Made me blush

Salvage Squad! Salvage Hunters is that one with a bloke driving around in a van looking for "antiques" isn't it?

Either way I've been watching too much Quest - I'm sure the one with the SWB dustbin truck was on last month.

Finally got round to trying the poundland wheel cleaner. Amazing, I have shinyish things on each corner again. Reckon if I could be arsed to give them a scrub with a brush they would look perfect.

Posted

There is exactly one of these with 2 wheels nicked off the right-hand side and laying on its sill around the corner from me, back window smashed in. I remember when this happened to Metros in the mid-90s.

just by asda?

I saw one the other week where they had to rebuild a gyro copter for a show but a "seal" went in the engine and it took two weeks to get.

Not very plausible considering it was an air cooled vw engine, I think the engine builder fucked up something badly and bullshitted them that it was a seal

Yep, RJW Design, thats him.

I dunno, I once had a walrus enter my Beetle engine and it took ages to coax out with a fish.

Had a visit from one of my customers today, Harry pops by once a month for a chinwag and I managed to pap him before he left.

I think he's about 92 now, he's had the Riley rme since 1969 and it's his only car, he drives it in all weathers and through winters but keeps it garaged and is always tinkering.

The car is brush painted with hammerite smooth, the colour is aubergine and he still grumbles that hammerite stopped making the colour and his touch up tins have gone off

He doesn't want for any other car,he's been given modern cars (maestro, pug 306) but he only likes the Riley.

He's on the lookout for a 54/55 rme in blue with grey interior.

I've been in the car with him and he's still pretty sharp behind the wheel and gives it a bit of welly.
