I'll leave this eyesore here :-(

Karif !  Forgot about Karif.  Good one.

Brochure quote:

an exceptional road 'animal', an exciting driving experience, an invitation to feel like a racing driver again or for the first time

What a noshup.  No more than the shortened Biturbo Spider ...with a fixed head Coupe roof !

222 built. 285 bhp.

The 405 was launched in Britain in '88, the huge advertising campaign lead-up prompted us to expect nothing short of motoring perfection, as well as wondering why we had to wait.

In America, there was a similar huge build up but sales flopped - two years after launch, Peugeot withdrew from the US.

E34 5series actually arrived in the UK in July 87. Pug 405 arrived in the UK 30years ago next month although launched in the summer of 87 on the continent. Mk3 Fiesta was announced in Oct 88 so that does theoretically count even though again it wasn't physically here until early 89.

The Alfa 164 was a big launch in 88..as well as Proton arriving in the UK. The only other car I can think of other than the others posted above that again launched in 88 in the UK was the original Mazda 121.

How specific can we be?

My mum's Escort 1.4LX was delivered new on the 16th February 1988. E881 HLU from Perrys somewhere in London.

That would be just coming up to 30.

Amazing the fact that the last proper cars ever built are 32 years old by now.

Does this count for cars that were on sale before 86 and after it or an 86 car is a proper car but the same car made in 87 isn't? Curiosity has got my interest!

Not more 1989 talk in this 1988 thread of desire

The Z1 BMW was announced to the press in '86, launched in '87, caused problems for the company in '88 only making it down the production lines in '89. Which averages out as 1988, if rounded to the nearest year.

Should've been a sales success with M20 engine, half steel monocoque substructure and a multi-link back axle, perhaps the belt-driven doors which vanished into the sills were too unusual, or perhaps they just didn't get the handling tuned correctly? Another reason to buy RoverGroup.

XJ220 'racers' ??

Is it right that the 'marque racing series' was a ruse to get the unsold units moved on?

I have seen some action on the TV and 'banger derby' came to mind.... Megga Dollari knobbheads having a [literal] bash around the circuit :/TS

Ahhh....

It was a fantastic drivers car, but fearsomely expensive - it was 911 money but with 171 bhp. It was more of a 'look what we can do!' exercise. The E30 M3 would run rings around it yet was cheaper.

I was told by someone on here that Tipo floors including the sills are not galvanised.  The logic of why not escapes me...

Fiat were obviously inspired by pre-facelift Citroen BXs, which also feature galvanised panels sitting on a non-galvanised floorpan.

Citroen XM had the same baffling setup; galvanized on top, plain old steel underneath. Stupid stupid stupid.

Obvious really. Rain comes from above, so you galvanize the top. You don't hold an umbrella upside down under your bollocks, do you?
