Been like an addict about to jump off the wagon trying to avoid repeatedly viewing station's Merc for sale thread. To distract myself I took the GTV for a spin over a ( very dank and misty) Dartmoor. Ticks all the sportscar boxes with a nice engine note, compromised visibility and a firm ride. I think the valve stem seals are a bit tired as it kicks out a bit of blue smoke after a cold start that soon clears. Addition shite points also to the the previous owners' HID lamp conversion which, looking at my pic, I now reallise has gone all Italian.....

Later I flicked the switch off and on and it was back in action. Maybe a loose connection? Something I've been accused of myself when people see these old Alfas cluttering up the drive!

My experience of cheap HID conversions is that after a few weeks its a total lottery if they both switch on or not.

Plus the usual problem of one lighting the road 7 feet in front of the car and the other signalling to life on Venus.

Bloody hell those pictures look grim, the shite gods were watching over the pair of them to get them through it unscathed, i really hope they both go to the hospital with a pain in their neck and back over that one if you get my drift

Can you reverse two miles?

Or reverse up crail 8 times in a row ?

Posted

I can't remeber what the mileage was when I sold it to you! 170000?

Posted

Excellent, thanks :D I did consider doing that myself but I'm not very good at Photoshop.

I'm impressed that you altered the trip too.

Posted

No sweat bud. Would not have a clue how to do it in photoshop, just used MS paint.

Only did it as the "2" and "0" were there so just copy/paste.

I helped my neighbour to retrieve the L200 on the left earlier, it's my first time with a towing pole and it was an odd experience but it's so much better than a rope.

Not sure about the L200, it was £800 and has signs of neglect, including a brown coolant explosion in the engine bay and a swimming pool in the driver's footwell, it runs badly with an engine management light and the 4-wheel drive light flashing. Is an old L200 worth £800 in spares? To be fair I've seen some horrible ones go for mid-high hundreds on eBay. I think he's going to try to make a good one out of both.

They're not to my taste at all, my dad had one new and they're awful to drive even with delivery miles.

If put money on a cracked head . I'd be looking at the shells too as they knock them out at about 100k ish . Stitch in time etc

Depends how rotten they might or might not be. I have seen some where the gap between bed and cab has closed up at the top due to the chassis bending.

My Mazda is the same sort of vehicle and the ride is attrocious too. A bit of weight in the bed helps a little to smooth out the pogo-stick ride, but its far from comfortable on anything but the smoothest of roads.

Speaking of twin-cab wankermobiles, following the tribulations of my last sale attempt with the Mazda, involving imposter buyers and all sorts of hassle, the original buyer who went radio-silence ages ago called last night and says he has now repaired his flatbed truck and will come to buy it during the week.
We will see.

Finally got around to fitting the new wheel centres for the Turbine's on the GTE. Dave made them up at the end of last year... but I'd been waiting to get badges and adhesive before fitting them!

Been bored most of the weekend, until I discovered Lego Digital Designer:

Lego_1981_c_zpskdjyzzwk.jpg

When I was a kid, I used to build this entire range of stylish* vehicles and "sell" them to Lego people from my showroom (which was a re-purposed K-Tel record selector).  As long as most of the people were content to drive a 1300 base (the blue and white one), I could build more than 50 in total.  Only folk with ties would get a Granada (big screen job), and you'd need a tie AND fancy wig to get your hands on the turbo 4x4 in the foreground (in special order grey).  There were number plates and a DVLA and everything, it was pretty sad.

Anyway, the software is free and as easy to use as real Lego, so try it out.

Does it include a giant box of all the bits mixed together, and an irritating need to go to the bathroom when you're almost certain you've finally found that little 1x1 black square bit amongst 2,000 random and often giant bits of plastic?

Today I prodded the Audi again and cleaned the ISV.

It still runs oddly. Also, and I'm not a great Audi expert so I don't feel too dumb for this - where the hell is the fan switch? All the parts diagrams I find show a wider, twin-fan radiator for Quattro models, not the weird-ass dual radiator setup of this 90, and everything says "fan switch goes in the radiator" but I can't see it. It's either not there, or it lives right underneath the fan cowling.

Hate cars.

£1000 of repairs in under 6,000 miles. Could only happen to me...

I'm already wondering how hard it would be to make a Lego Rover 800.

Jeez, what's wrong with it now? Hope it's not a money pit.

Lost drive while pulling away from a roundabout in Aberdeen, some passers by helped shove it onto the grass and out of traffic. Once off the road I had a look underneath and under the bonnet thinking it was a clutch issue. Nope, O/S drive shaft no longer connected to the wheel, snapped. Didn't get home 'till 1:40am.

Recovery driver said he was getting a lot of suspension and drive shaft failures recently due to the shit condition of the roads. As a bonus he liked repairing engines and had owned Triumphs so we had a good chat on the 60 mile drive back...

Timing belt + service carried out 4 days ago for £350, bastard of a thing.  Now back at the garage, should get it back tomorrow.

On average I spend about £350 on car repairs a month regardless of what I drive, so hopefully this is March's breakdown occurring slightly early...

Bargain I reckon, but I'd swop those (Irmscher?) alloys for authentic Merit steels (if you can find 'em). It'll appeal more looking unmolested and you may get a few quid for the rims.
