In other news, I'm after selling the ZX estate; if there's anyone who can fizz up a holed sill, adjust the handbrake and fit new discs, it'd probably do another test and make a very cheap hack for someone - or a very good engine donor

160k, Lucas pump XU9TD, short MoT (end of the month), £100. It'll be on standard black steels - I'd like to keep the Picasso wide steels for KNOB_VAN. I've also taken the boom sub and amp out. It's near Peebo if you want it.

So..........anyone keen?

Saw one of these this morning!

Slightly lighter red with a beige hood. It was leaving the business park following a silver insignia (I think) which had a camera mounted on the boot.

Rover is still losing a bit of water (not out the exhaust, not OMGHGF as far as I can tell).  Had a check over it all and the inlet manifold and all the back of the block is now bone dry, as is the radiator and all fixings.  I've got what looks like a weep from the waterpump so I expect it's that.  Given I've no history on when the cambelt was done I'm guessing it's high time I did that and the waterpump to sort both things out.  Also noticed that the end of the rubber power steering hoses are all wet so I guess those are leaking and need replacement too.  Normal for K series?

I dropped part of a brake caliper and it rolled underneath the 300CE. So I got on the floor, reached under the car, picked it up and carried on bouncing around the garage cleaning and tidying and fixing things.

This is not notable, except I never thought I'd be able to get onto the floor and get up again without serious discomfort/support ever again. I have never, ever been so glad to have to pay for parking or worry about door dings.

Finally got the 75 booked in at British Legends in a couple of weeks for new belts / WP / Tensioner / Thermostat and housing, Been quoted £650 all in which isn't bad for all those parts / whole days labour plus an oil change.

I got the results of a Vehicle record request from the DVLA today. I got them last year for the Pandas and I thought it was quite interesting. They also confirmed a few queries...

This one was for the Marea. I wasn't going to bother, but I've been intrigued by the statement on the V5 that it was first registered or used overseas. The previous owner told me it was registered new in Italy and picked up by the 1st owner, driven round Europe and registered on their return to the UK.

There is also a warning label on the inside of the diesel flap that is in Dutch...

Anyway, it wasn't Italy, it was Germany...It was a BFG (British Forces Germany) registered car. The first owner brought it back to Salisbury, registered it (there is a copy of the V55/5) and then sold it on within a month...

Within the DVLA paperwork is a piss poor copy of the BFG registration document in German & English. It's a shame really, as I can't work out what the full BFG number is, as it's only partially copied. The only thing I can read clearly is the stamp on it saying 'BFG Light test 1999/2000 Test Centre No. 28 - Date 5 Jan 2000'...

What engine has the Volvo got?

2L Injected Volvo red block.

I have a 340 too which has the 1.7 Renault engine.

It's going to make a great daily car.

Is it a GLT? I had a 2.0 GLE with a carb and it was bloody awful but I heard the injected version was much much better.

Posted

I had a 360GLE the same as that back in the early 90's. It was a great car and I took it all over Europe in '94. Mine was injected and gave absolutly no trouble in the years I owned it.

Posted

It's a GLE but I think injection was an option.

To be brutally honest I've no idea what the difference between a GLE and a GLT is.

I've been driving a Renault 18 around for the past year and I just want something reliable to get through winter, I think this will do the trick.

I thought GLE was carb and GLT was injected but that can't be the case. The GLT was the sporty one.

The GLE with the carb is the most unreliable car I've ever had and every problem I had was with the carb. I did only pay 100 quid for it mind you.

Focus dash lights did a disco on way home tonight. Flashing eng management and brake light, headlights dimming and flickering.

Slotted in voltage reader and the charging was spiking at 17v! Eek.

This conincided with disco lights. Will check the battery type tomorrow and check it is Silver Calcium. Otherwise might be alternator I guess.

This saloon is quick, quicker than I expected.

FOAD's girlfriend has a 360 GLT with the same engine and injection and it seems really lazy - this one fairly shifts.

The carb ones only have 92bhp wheras the injection ones have 116bhp.

Moog I believe there is a multi plug on top of the alternator that if present you have the smart charge system that goes up to 18v. In which case you will need the silver calcium battery. However if you disconnect the multi plug the alternator should output 13.5v ish like a normal car. The charge light will be on though on the dash. I had all of this caper with my wifes fiesta. In the end the battery was just enough to start the car in the hospital car park to bring my newborn daughter home it FTP the next day on the drive.

Is there a benefit to smart charge? Could you just keep it unplugged?

Ball joints? That's exactly how my Mercedes felt just before its wheel fell off on the roundabout.

I'm going to do track rod ends next and pray that's it.

New tat purchase officially off due to the vendor simply not replying to emails anymore. This is annoying, because I really would have liked to be driving around in this next week

Just FYI as well, half-remembered but might help - our old Scorpio did this shit, and it was the ignition relay, but that had been burned out by overcharging, boiled the battery, and then killed the alternator too.

Battery it currently (lolz) has

Checking online I can't see which batteries are calcium and which ones are leadones. Is there an easy way?

EDIT: pulled the smart charging plug and now is putting out 13.5v.

glt should just edge it if both cars are in good order.

This is glt vs gle (inj vs carb)

I've had glt injection and gle carb and I preffered the carb. Kjet is fucking terrible imo.

Each to their own though.

Interesting video.

My GLE has injection though - seems you get a "GLE Injection" model.

I do prefer carbs in general but this is working okay so I'll leave it be.

The model designations on the DAF built Volvos seem all over the place.

The 340 is Renault engine, the 360 is Volvo engine.

The 440 is a hatchback but the 460 is a Saloon, with the same engines.

There's a guy not far away who has a GLE with a carb, so they must have been made with both I reckon.
