Don't buy modern cars kids, JUST SAY NO

!attachicon.gifimage.jpg

My 2010 quality* German Executive car going to it's new home.

Purchase price October 2014- £8,300.

Sale price August 2015- £3,500.

Minus £350 to strip engine to discover M57 engines aren't 'bulletproof'

Now to find an executive * type car under 6 years old for £5,000 ( that's not German or diesel).

Note,apparently 5 tonne Transit beavertail !!

Fuck. I was going to post this but I thought you'd found an engine.

607 :D

sonata or magentis

avensis estate :D

I'd love a 607 but they're too old now. Magentis. The same, too old.The Sonata along with the Epica are possibilities, bonus that as they're pure Autoshite from the factory Skizzer couldn't shout at me for talking about them.Front runners at the moment are Honda Legend if I can scrape another thousand or so together, or maybe a Saaab 9-5, Citroen C6 or ( the most likely as I loved my old one ) a Chrysler 300 .

Wow, scrapping an M5 would make me cry.

I've passed link on tho the lad that bought mine, although there's bound to be some reason the head won't fit- it appears BMW changed every component on the 3.0 M57 every year , just for fun.

Edited to add, this is also a response to Stuboy and Cort16- I can't multi quote !!

I've just successfully repaired a Cit with a faulty EGS gearbox, and the rover hasn't failed it's mot too badly.

Finally put the SLK back together - new airfilter and throttle body screen. Comparing the old screen and the new, it's clear the old rubber has been compressed and wouldn't make a good seal when the parts were reassembled - it had a definite "this part is resting ON the gasket" feel when put back together this time, so the compression was obvious even if the depth of the gasket did not look all that different.

Car now drives like I would expect a new one to drive. Goes like stink, smooth engine note (before it would sometimes fart or splutter, making the exhaust sound rattly), pulls itself along in idle. Expect fuel economy will be better, too. I don't think there was any one thing that make it so bad, aside from the oil in the intake fouling the MAF and generally suggesting pressure in the engine wouldn't be what it should be, but having gone over all of the cheap, but old perished rubber and carbon-clogged parts and then ensuring EVERYTHING is sealing up properly has made a huge difference.

Make it good news, please, I broke the engine cover in excitement and I've lobbed a gallon of veg in it anyhow!

The Jewish Racing Beige Saxo is now firmly ensconced in the fold and upon closer inspection it's...

...actually totally fine. Not a sign of previous twat mods, rust... just stuff that needs tiding and sorting, as it's been sitting for a bit. Father J-Rod has confirmed this too (and he's a fussy fecker).

Seller was also a thoroughly decent human being.

Hooray!

Oh bother. Thanks, though.

My Polio ran happily on a 50/50 derv/veg mix.

just swap the fooking filter afore ye start!

for a 50L fill, pure derv would be £56.45 (1.12 a litre)

swap to 50/50 wvo at 35p/ and it is £36.97..

Car is paid for in 2* tanks (price based on cavcraft valuations inc book, aug 2015)

May have found someone to help me weld my exhaust!

He said either make one good one out of the 2 new bits and 1 old bit I have, or just sleeve and weld the backbox straight onto the current centre pipe.

Just need to find a clear weekend now...

Where do I get bearing shells for a Renault 6?  Also after the paper gasket under the liners and probably piston rings.  Otherwise, all seems pretty healthy in there.

I CBA with WVO, it's hard to get round here now as chippies are getting paid for their waste.

It was £40 for 60 litres new when I got some a few weeks back.

I'll try 50/50 and see what happens, though if it looks like it'll get through another MOT I'll put the 306 engine in it and run it for as long as I can.

You don't want waste vegetable oil from most chippies, it's usually over-used and fatty, they sometimes use semi-solid oil too.

Any smaller scale users of vegetable oil usually produce good waste oil, pubs, hotels, small cafes

It's really clean, I think it'd make great fuel stock.

The chip shop where I grew up used to change their fat once a year. They also had scud mags pegged to a washing line across the corner of the shop. You don't get shops like that any more.

I'm not sure why they are suddenly struggling to get the waste collected but if its a sign of things to come could be a good thing, I really can't be bothered with loads of ibcs again and the vermin probs the oil brings so would have to keep it to just a handfull of customers this time.

ATF fluid return pipe exploded on my driveway spewing out several pints all over the shop. New part arrived but it took me 3 hours or more to undo one connector. The oil pan had to be removed and I found this lightweight thing seems to become heavy when it lands on your head. Atf fluid has a sweet taste.

True - it's made from strawberry juice.

Start looking on leboncoin for a piston and liner set . It is the cheapest and easiest way of sorting the piston rings. They will come with a selection of liner seals. Search for chemise. Does it really need shells ? If so you are better off having it reground and use oversize bearings, shouldn't be too hard to find. The Renault owners club might be worth trying for liners as the 6 engine is quite common compared to the ones I usually deal with. If I remember correctly the paper seals will have a colour strip on them but if you get new liners then set it up with a dial gauge, but it will probably use the same colour. That will make more sense when you have the new parts.. I have rebuilt 1289cc engines by using the bottom end out of a 1.4 super 5 the blocks are the same you might have to swap the cam and head on a 6 though. I t worked on an Estafette when the twat from the AA managed to throw a rod through the block.

The Magentis outlasted the Sonata I'm sure, our local Kia dealer were turning them out as late as 2010 when the equally handsome Optima replaced it.

Oops, my mistake . You could actually get both of them on 10 plates, although the fact that you'd have to pay £4.5-7k for the privilege means you probably wouldn't , unless you really hate Mondeos,Volvo S80's , insignias,Passats, etc that cost less for the same age.

After about 16 months of (almost) faithful service, I'm going to (try and) sell the Vectra. I can honestly seeing it going to a scrapyard in October when the test runs out, as it's redeeming features to anyone but me are about minus several thousand.

It's pretty minging inside/out, smells a bit, hasn't been serviced since God was in a Moses basket and has some interesting* features such a heater that only works on the highest setting and now makes strange sort of whooping noises. I've done a few thousand mile in it though and it's effing brilliant. Reasonably fast, pretty comfortable, ace on juice, has taken many a good pasting, swallows large loads and suffers neglect superbly well. So well, in fact, it reminds me of an old 8V Cavalier.  It's even shown a dirty pair of heels to many 'flasher' motors in the traffic light GP.
