Well, the Corsa (2002 C 1.2 SXi) did what Vauxhalls do best and refused at the first hurdle: It hadn't ran for ages and the key is snapped in the ignition. Jump leads attached, left it a while and it's spinning over but not firing up. The chain is assumed ok because the cam is turning so we don't think that's the problem.

It's almost certainly fuel (and thus probably immobilisor) related so will go back tomorrow and see what happens with a fully charged battery and maybe a fault code reader.

Is 2202 the year of production? Or is it C reg? I'm a bit out of touch with these things...

Does it have an immobiliser chip in he key fob? If the key's snapped off in the ignition I was thinking maybe you were turning the remains with a pair of pliers or something.

Yeah, I know, I've been corrupted by "moderns" but I've no idea when they started fitting these demonic devices.

Mercedez Benz Newz:

Changed the coolant on my W124 E280 a couple of weeks ago. Went mad and used fancy ‘green’ stuff and everything. Well, I don't know what I did wrong, but ever since the temp gauge has been reading worryingly high. I was kind of hoping this was at least partly due to the warmer weather and the fact that I've done more high-speed driving and load-lugging than usual lately. Still, I reckon I probably got an air lock or summert in the system. Is this plausible?

Anyway, I've just come out of Sainsbury's to find a puddle under the bumper; there's a pin-hole leak in the top of the rad. Don't really know if this is coincidence or what.

Pin hole leak could be radiator neck. Lots of mercs from 1980s to mid 90s had Behr radiators with no metal insert in the hose necks. Constant heating and cooling makes the plastic brittle, might be a hairline crack causing your leak.

Park with the nearside on the kerb, open expansion bottle cap and run the engine for at least 15 mins till its up to temperature. Heaters on hot but no blower, and squeeze the rad hoses periodically too as the engine warms up to help any bubbles out. There should also be a bleed screw on top of thermostat housing, this can widdle and weep as well. Might be running hotter if you changed the thermostat, some are 85 degrees some are 87.Whether that would make enough of a difference I don't know...

This. I got a copy of my Seat key made because it looked close to snapping, but because I was stingy I just taped the top half of the old key to the steering column shroud because the new key was a cheap one without a chip.

Did this on a rusty Ka shitter I had, I thought it was a great fix!

Ah, now it all makes sense ;-)

It's best of you do that inside the shroud, as close to the barrel as possible, that way no one knows it's there...

When I got my first 406 I never even knew such a thing existed. The car came with 3 keys, I thought they were all the same, and that the car had some weird starting issue I couldn't fathom.

The 850 has gone. To celebrate* SWMBO took me out to pay for a delicious Indian meal. Stepped outside and... well... her words were "don't be stupid, you'd look like a fucking drug dealer".

Is that the right year for snapping the camshaft?...its roughly the year anyway and definately the right engine, camshaft bolts come loose, camshaft snaps, hopefully not.

Immobiliser part of key is present, the very end has snapped off in the ignition but the remains (i.e fob etc) can be put in ignition and turned. The keyfob is working to lock/unlock the doors and the owner says the car was started a few weeks back before the battery went flat.

I still think it's the immob playing up as it seems to me the car is being starved of fuel which I understand happens if the problem is the immob.

Gave the throttle body and idle air control valve on The Wentworth a clean today. They were seriously grimy inside, so much so that I used two whole cans of carb cleaner on them; I reckon that they had never received any such attention in the past. The car idles and runs a lot smoother now.

I also managed to correctly adjust the kickdown cable, which has stopped the automatic transmission from downshifting when I didn't want it to (i.e. every time I pressed the accelerator pedal - even slightly - when cruising at anywhere between 40mph and 70mph), which will no doubt help the car's fuel consumption and the well-being of the engine and transmission ;)

My lawnmower seemed to shit itself today after I let it run low on oil. Lost power and started smoking like it was puffing JPS. Weirdly, after topping the oil up it ran ok and I managed to finish the lawn. A hardy wee beast.

I am of course joking as I have not (as yet) entered into any nefarious activity to fund my whip. Bear in mind I have covered 600 miles so far in the 735 at a cost of £120..

Ah well, it was just a thought.

So immobiliser is favourite. Or the fuel pump has seized, or the fuse has blown, or the relay controlling the fuel pump has crapped out because Bosch...

Still reckon it's the immobiliser, unfortunately my lad is working so can't get chance to go with me and bring his FCR.

Well, today I went and got the Aldi from Volksworks who have had it for 3 months and still not got it running. I have had it dragged to another VW specialist to look at.

Had to pay £180 to get my car out of there though. :( What a gyp. Plus £35 to get it shifted.

They had replaced the cam sensors, adjusted the cam timing, replaced the ECU and its still not working. They had also taken off the rocker covers for some reason which are in the boot.

What's a bit annoying though is that when I was there I noticed that the front indicator seems to have melted. This would seem to suggest that it 'might' be an electrical problem FFS. I would think that it is most likely to be the alarm which is what Volksy suggested some time ago.

I am hearing back from the new garage on Wednesday to see what the griff is.

Fuppin ell man, I wish I could get my filthy hands on that, I love getting motors going that have beaten a few people. I wouldn;t have thought the melted indicator would be owt to do with it not running though, but that alarm/immobiliser does need binning completely first of all.

Hillman imp could put you up in the hilton and buy you beer and steak all night and it's probably still be cheaper then his garage bill.
