The new news 24 thread

I'll put up a thread tomorrow after getting some pictures of my own, haven't looked at it as nisfan drove it to where it's stored.

I'm not sure about the engine, it could just be the carburettor playing up, but there is an engine for sale in edinburgh if all else fails.

Since it still has mot and tax I'm going to try sort it asap so I can drive it, which will ultimately mean the 340 gets put on the backburner but that's okay.

I picked up my Sterling today. The expansion tank seems to have some cement coloured stuff on it. Doesn't bother me much but I suppose if it stops the coolant from leaking...

I saw a Rover 75 parked at the side of the road with the bonnet up, I pulled in to ask if they needed some assistance. The oldish couple in the car said that they'd called the breakdown services and that they were Ok. I hope they get their car sorted.

It looks likely i'm going to be moving all my cortinas to covered storage soon. My mate Adrian shares a unit with another guy, anyway the other lad is moving out to a much larger unit so Ady needs a 'flatmate' to move in to share costs so he can stay there.

It's secure, about 2 miles from my work, and has space for six cars (3 each) and storage for parts.

The only thing i was/am unsure about is costs, the unit is £300 pcm all in which between two of us ain't bad.

I'm always going to have a cortina on the road, but this would give me the chance to have everything in one place, both resto projects, the vast spares hoard, etc

Plus i thnk it will be a good mojo bost to really rip into the estate. The best thing is having some else there for moral support/help/tea making.

I'm trying to get him to sign up on here but he doesn't really do forums, he only uses the internet to buy parts and supplies, which is a shame as he's a bloody good sprayer, is shit hot at auto-electrics and his tat haul has something for everyone. ('77 mini clubman, '78 sunbeam with xe conversion, mk3 escort van, mk2 XR2, mk1 fiesta with hot X-flow, and i think two other cars that i havn't seen.)

That BX that was winking at me very recently now has an advert up on RR.  I'm spreading the word where I can because even with the niggles it has it's a bargainous bargain and it seems wrong not to spread the word about it.  Copied from the blue forum:

Be3Or3wCIAABzAr.jpg

1.9 Non-turbo diesel hatchback, Saphir Bleu, registration K179 RLN, 131,000 miles.

MOT: Mid-June
Tax: end of July

Situated in Bristol/Redditch depending on timing.

I'll go through the bad points first... I've had enough of trying and failing to fix an air leak in to the fuel system, so it'll stall every 5-10 mins unless you're on full throttle for most of the time (i.e. it's fine storming along A/B roads, but bad in traffic). It might be an easy fix that I've missed, or it might be something more serious to do with Diesely magic, but that's the risk you take - I'm just fed up of it. I'm fairly certain it needs a new accumulator sphere as the tick time is down to 5-6 seconds, there are a couple of small oil leaks and a small LHM leak from somewhere around the accumulator sphere, it leaks in rain water from the top of the windscreen, and the sun-roof switch can be a bit temperamental.

Apart from that it's basically spot on, I've spent the past 6 months making it tidy, the interior is immaculate, the outside is decent with a few very small dings/scrapes, it's 99.9% rust free, it'll do 50mpg quite easily, and run on bio/veg if you are so inclined, as it has the Bosch pump.

The hubcaps on it are "custom" painted (by me) TZD caps with dark grey centre panels. The roof and spoiler have been rattle canned (again by me, quite well though) as they had bad lacquer peel when I got the car. It had a clutch change about 10,000 miles ago, the rear window is only 6 months old (so rear demister works perfectly), I retrofitted the "one touch" driver's window switch from an old 16V, it's got a set of tailored floor mats that haven't seen many miles, I could go on. I've done loads of stuff to it to make it really neat and tidy which you can read about here - retrorides.proboards.com/thread/152418/1993-citroen-bx-19txd

Unfortunately I've reached my bandwith limit on photobucket so the photos don't appear in the thread and I can't embed them here, but here's a link to my account with all the photos on it, in reverse order to chart the progress I made with the car -s192.photobucket.com/user/supra4l/library/The%20BX?sort=2&page=1

The car comes with a few spares and some Thule roof bars. I'll be keeping the stereo and sub, but leaving in the speakers (only cheap jobbies but they still sound better than the originals).

I'll clean the car up and take some up to date pictures tomorrow and try to add them on here.

Oh and I'm still using the thing daily, so it is perfectly capable of long distance driving, you just need to have your wits about you to make sure it doesn't stall in a dangerous place as it takes 15-20 secs to start up again.

Thought I'd also mention the car has a set of 5 month/6,000 mile old Yokohama tyres on, with plenty of tread left.

Any questions, please feel free to ask/PM me: http://retrorides.proboards.com/user/21415

I'd love to take it on myself, I really would, but we've covered that ground so I'm doing the next best thing and trying to find it a new home instead.

Just got a message back from the guy with the Fuego engine, wants £200 which is way out of my "18 budget" at the moment.

Will try to fix the current one but if not I think the 2.1 diesel "douvrin" engine from a trafic will be a better option, and cheaper.

Though not entirely sure whats involved, but I do know something_awful's 18 gtd has this engine.

I came very close to offering the Sirion as a swap for that BX. I suspect a fuel line leak somewhere, possibly the fuel primer. Seems outrageous value.

Posted

It's not a problem, being a non-turbo diesel you WILL be at full throttle all the time anyway.

Got absolutely soaked with my mate Munkie servicing the lorry today, it don't half go better now though.

Posted

Think the problem with the 18 is the carb, got a bit of fuel leaking from the accelerator pump area which would explain why it idles reasonably okay but misfires with any sort of power.

Posted

Sounds like a reasonably plausible explanation.

Get yourself a carb gasket set and an accelerator pump diaphragm.

That's the plan though that might prove quite difficult to find.

What's the carb? Someone on here will have one.

I really want to do a proper job rather than a bodge, so if anyone knows a good welder who's handy with tricky fabrication stuff and vaguely Midlands based (I live in Leamington) then please let me know.

Try Steve and Nick at Double-H Restorations near Kenilworth.  They're ostensibly into air-cooled VWs, but they'll take on pretty much anything; there was a Rod, a yank pick-up and Porsche in the workshop when I was last there.  Their premises are rubbish but the work is top notch (although I am no expert) and they're in it for the love of it rather than the money so they'll quote you a fair price, I'm sure.

If you speak to Nick, say Ceri sent you!

Been on a day trip to reading to pick up a interior for my Clio and then for bonus points got a fiat croma dealer poster on the way back from Northampton to put up in the garage. A GR9 day collecting bits in the 306 dizzler which loves swallowing any crap I put in the back.

Sod priceless artworks I am happy with a faded fiat in a knackered old frame.

Can't remember if I've mentioned it but my local garage agrees with me that the Sirion's random power loss issue is probably down to an exhaust blockage - hence why it really kicks in on bends as the utterly knackered baffles move and block the flow of gas. Since identifying this fault, I've done absolutely nothing about it. I could get a complete system for £30-40, but there is part of me wondering if it's worth removing the old exhaust (which is perferation free) and seeing if I can tip the broken baffles out. I suspect this is an utter waste of time. Planning a bit of a roadtrip in it on Tuesday.

Posted

Can't you shove a hoover hose up the end and see if anything is sucked out?

Posted

Sadly, my hoover hose is considerably wider than the exhaust! It's a proper pea-shooter. Perhaps a smaller hose and gaffer tape can be used. Shhhh! Don't tell the missus about this potential Henry abuse...

Posted

If your garage is handy with the welder then can't they cut the box open, remove the baffles and then weld it back up again?, Obviously it might be a bit noisy though afterwards.

Stick a cherry bomb or a Peco Red Bullet on it and enjoy the half-a-911 experience...

My Cuore rally car came with a straight-through exhaust that wasn't particularly loud ... the noise of the engine doing 9k rpm and the whining diffs were much louder than the little exhaust :D

Someone has sent me $40USD via Paypal with no note to tell me what it's for.  There's also no e-mails or notes on any of the various places I use.  It's not someone on here is it?  The e-mail is familiar, but I can't place it.

Posted

It's a proper payment, it's not a hoax job.  I mean, I don't mind that someone has sent me money but I wasn't expecting it and I don't want to lay claim to it if it's paid in error or paid for some work that someone has forgot to send me a message about.

I predict it will be a commision for a drawing of a galloping horse galloping towards a picture of a galloping horse galloping towards a picture of a galloping horse galloping towards a picture of a galloping horse galloping towards a picture of a galloping horse galloping towards a picture of a galloping horse galloping towards a picture of a galloping horse until your pencils won't go sharp enough to draw the final horse in sufficient detail

Probably just sent to the wrong email address, they can reverse it when they realise what they've done.
