fleet update time-

first off the lexus, i suffered a FTP yesterday aternoon, while in the worsed rain since Noah.... coming home i had to pull off the M18 briefly at Rotherham, as i was loosing one of the wiper blades. with that back where it was supposed to be i re-joinded the motorway, only to have the car kick down, and light up an array of wanring lamps. battery, hand brake, ABS, transmission fluid and some others that i dunno what they mean.

oh dear....

oh dear, oh dear.....

well no choice now but to press on. all the time in monsoon rains. i turned off everything that i deared too, but the wipers were getting slower and slower.... pass the M180 interchange, and the car finally quit on me. i coasted down into the sliproad for junction 6, and called the RAC.  who got it running on his jumper pack, but confirmed that all the electric had leaked out cos the alternator isn't doing it stuff. so get the carpark at Maccy D's outside of Thorne. though now soppin' wet through. at least coming home from work i did have a change of clothes in the boot. no choice now but to pay up, and wait for recovery....

this was 5pm? finally got recovered at 10.30  back to the FiLs, after paying for it cos Kerry who organised insurance got "roadside assistance" but not "recovery" we will be having words about that..... (in Kerry's mind, these are THE SAME, however to everyone else they are DIFFERENT)

so, our "big green dollop" is now, a "big broken dollop" as is the way of things. especially on here

an alternator? well Toyota list it as NLA, a second hane one from a breaker in Stockton, £150 + vat. we will be getting one from somewhere else.... and i bet its an utter twat to change one of them on a LS400! even better, all the local mechanics/garages rounf here won't touch it, cos its a Lexus.

the Rover? well that remains broken, but its going next weekend (29-30) september to get fixed, so hope that will soon be back on the line.

and the black mini? it runs, runs better too with the proper fannimold and peashooter exhaust, but i wouldn't trust it to get to the corner shop and back. PBK's offer of a £100 is looking more and more tempting!

which leaves both Cocopop and Marvin. well, currently (touch wood) they are ok, so i think its going to be the Mini for work next week.

joy.....

anyone got an alternator for a '97 LS400? no, i didn't think so..... anyone fancy a slightly* brooken lexus? no. again i thought not....

bloody shitty old cars, i swear i'm going to get a nice* dogshit  white aldi on rent......

Today was my last day slaving away for a bloody Septic giant corporation. I hope forever. I just fucking hate them.

On Monday I'll join a delightfully Yerpeen company investing huge motherfucking money in the post Brexit Ununited Kingdom.

Like they all do since the referendum.

Today's my last day acting as other people's human stress ball at a university.

On Monday, I'm not doing anything, and I don't know when I'll next be doing anything! Erk.

Have a search through DW's old Lexus thread, he had one changed & don't think the job looked too bad. But he had a cambelt done at the same time so that might have moved enough stuff out of the way.

^ we've just been and had a wee look, the alternator is burried under the o/s bank of cylinders underneath the power steering pump.

it looks like an utter, utter twat of a job!

there is a serpentine belt running all over the front of the engine from the a/c comressor on the otherside, over what must be the water pump and crankshaf pully and over i think a couple of idlers..... basically all over the place, no wonder no one in the trade round here wants to touch them!

I think I recall it being a job to do from underneath.

Stress and university are mutually exclusive.

The other day I read an article about the increasing number of students suffering burnout syndrome.

Students! Suffering burnout syndrome! PMSL!!!

When I was a student, burnout syndrome was when we had nothing left to smoke at a party.

It's different now days, I mean poor Ghosty posted the other day he's got to get up for 1PM! that's just too early for a student.

Law students have quite a high rate of suicide.

We'd actually hear of a couple of bodies per year being found in halls of residence.

Also, RE: LS400s at least it isn't the starter motor.

That's realising they'll become lawyers, not the work

Aye. I decided about 6 weeks into my law degree that I didn't want to be a lawyer as I didn't want to work with people like that for the rest of my life. Money would've been nice mind.

Depends on your course. I knew people at Uni who were only in 2 days a week for a couple of hours. I was in every day at 9 and finished at some point between 4 and 6. I didn't even live in halls on site, I drove in 30 mins each way every day, so it was the same as a full-time job. Except I also had to find time for all the additional project work that was expected to be done outside of Lectures/tutorials/etc.

Univesity was bloody hard work on my course. And I had a part-time job to be able to pay for my own transport and pay my Uni fees.

I'm off with guy fawke's bottom today, so decided to sit down with Amy and the laptop and go through this benefits checker she was told about from a friend who claims. Fair enough.

4 hours later, I've registered me and her, filled out 20 questions x2, registered for some government verify thing x2 and was just about ready to slit my wrists.

Get to a screen that says 'call us for an interview...' What?

So I call up, and yep, got to attend oxford job centre next tuesday. Sorry pal, can't get annual leave from WORK that quickly..

"Work Sir?" 4 minutes later I now know that one cannot claim universal credit whilst holding down a 47 hour week full time job.

Amy is now very apologetic, seems her friend is UNEMPLOYED, which is why she fully qualified! And I feel like a dick!

Seems the 4 million questions I need to fill out are within the 'claiming working tax credits' wizard!

If I wasn't ill I'd have been drinking by now.

It's Friday, I've got the day off work and I'm on a train. That can only mean one thing.

Must be a popular collectioneering weekend. I've just got in from work via the bank. I've got train tickets, an envelope of money & an alarm set for sunday morning.

Replacing the starter on an LS400 is the highest punishment doled out at the 24 hours of Lemons.

It's nestled in the V, underneath a heap of other stuff.

Also, I briefly dated a law student. She was alright-ish, but then when we went out with her mates I just wanted to slap all of them. Unbearable.

Amazingly, after another night of gales and bouncing bins etc, today has dawned bright... and breezy - took the dogs to the park overlooking the sea and nearly got blown off the cliff top!

But, apart from having to prop the bonnet up with a walking stick to stop the wind trying to dent my bonce, jobs got done! I tried to do the oil pressure switch but failed, after bringing every size spanner from 10 - 17mm none of them were big enough, jaws wise, or short enough lengthwise! So I abandoned that and made a start on thermostats. Pretty easy actually :) and there is loads of space once the airbox lids are off and the filters out of the way. My car does have the drain for the rad, but I am such a feeble old cripple (I really am: AS so walking stick etc)I couldn't undo the thing! Anyway, surprised to find a pair of old thermostats in place (I was convinced some nefariousness was afoot!) but they feel really weak and the coolant was all blue and clean, a very good thing I feel :)  Also new air filters so it does sort of show the car has been looked after? Start to finish in 90 minutes which for me (very slow these days) was pretty good.

I have left it without water until such times as the Barrs leaks turns up from Amazon and put a BIG note on the screen to inform me... just in case!

Anyone have any ideas how to change the big pressure switch? Looks to be about a 19mm but it will have to be a short little spanner unless there is a trick?

after bumping into NewPod who was changing bulbs in a pore mot fluster , I turned around and this little old lady was gripping the corner of the shop wall in an effort to stop being blown away , I supported her and asked where she was going , to my car , so I took her to the car , and her key fob would not work ..

so I tried the nearside door lock and opened the car , and found the battery was dead .....oh .... I just got it ( the car ) from the this shop ...

so back we went into the wind and into the shop .. she nearly blew away again !!!

and explained to the shop owner what was happening ........   one very happy looking chat .. not

that would certainly make alot of sense, there is bugger all room to get at it from on top!

You should be able to get the old one repaired/ reconditioned for less than the breakers want. I would carefully check all the connections before condemning it though, especially as it happened in the rain.

Yes, the only way is going to be either a very short Spaniard or cut one down. I may have one in the toolbox, so long since I looked, I can't remember! I was amazed that Hylomar was still good after at least 6 years in the box!  Odd system with the thermostats: one side has three 13mm bolts and points forward the other, has four 11mm bolts and points to the side! I was astonished that each and every one of the bolts came out without a major fight and everything looked good, not even alloy corrosion.

Of course, I am now paranoid that I have got one or both thermostats on the piss and the housing will be on the piss and leak like a sob! I hate being me sometimes (all the time really!).
