I drove a broken S60 2.0t today and it felt lovely. I’m sure a working one would be utterly delightfull.

I may have stuffed up the pumpkin soup by using half a bottle of white wine rather than vegetable stock, oh well I'll find out soon.

I threw away a load of car mats today including a set I had since 1995 - my wife bought them as a gift for my then new car - my E reg senator.

Nothing lasts forever.

Today the BMW collection has been mothballed for the winter as I like my jacking points to stay rust free and rod (rover of doom) has been sent down the garage to have his brakes looked at before taking on its winter duties.

I transferred my insurance over to rod but had to pay and extra £60 in admin and charges for some reason as a 1.6 slush box rover 400 is more to insure than a warm hatch 318ti E36.post-9282-0-32718800-1509525674_thumb.jpegpost-9282-0-80656500-1509525697_thumb.jpeg

I've now got to decide which cars I've got to sell which is going to be hard as all 3 are immaculate or the place is going to look like a 1997 BMW showroom.

So I have 4 cars sitting here and can't drive a single one.

Another parts order for the MGB has gone in again today. Main thing was the alternator, but also put a few other bits and pieces on too like a replacement rubber boot seal. I still managed to get it to 120quid again.

Seriously spent too much on it so far. I haven't even got any welding done yet. :?

I got speaking to a contractor at work and he was chatting about microlighting. A quick Google suggested what I've spent on the MGB so far could have paid enough to get my Microlight flying license.

Maybe I need to reconsider and take up another past-time?

At least the box is a decent enough size to justify the monies spent! It's getting a bit embarrassing though at work, with all these parcels arriving.

My permit to park has been confirmed too, so that's me driving in (rather than bicycle) for the winter now. I really wanted to use the MGB for this, but I'm really not sure now. Concerned that it a) won't be reliable, b ) rot away super quick.

My permit to park WALK IN has been confirmed too, so that's me sorted for the winter now. I really wanted to use the MGB for this, but I'm really confident now >>

.. that it

a) wouldn't be reliable

b ) rot away super quick, parked on the drive.

FTFY

I seem to recall hundreds of pages ago you were going buy a tatty but solid MGB you could use right away, whatever happened to that idea?

I bought a (mostly) solid MGB that wasn't very tatty and paid a reasonable sum for it. I drove it home fine and drove to the shops a couple of times. I got scared of old pipes, changed them and then stuff broke (master cylinder). Once I fixed that, it decided to break again (fuel tank leak and fuel pump died). Then I found the bouncy suspension, so fixed that but in the processes my OCD took over and started replacing all the worn rubbery bits down there.

Once I started to try using it finally, the alternator decided it didn't always want to alternate. So I bought a new alternator in haste to start using it!

Hopefully if I can get it moving, I can get it to my local garage to sort the fuel tank and hopefully sort the welding for me...

Not quite the way I wanted this to go. :?

If I could wander around UNDER my car & not clonk my head... I might have had a bash at 'rusty $hite' pipes, under ToMM©

Yo SiC, if you want your MGB to be reliable, there's no alternative but to just use it loads and work through the bugs, You'll get there eventually with it (as long as the karma does not get violated by shitty ching chong ignition components - has it got electronic ignition?)

Yeah, I'm hoping that I'm nearly there with it now. To be fair, it's been no show stoppers, just loads of little things. If I wasn't so slow at fixing cars, I would be using it already. I could have chucked it in the garage and got them to do it but part of it was to give me the confidence in doing more difficult jobs on cars - e.g. suspension and stuff.

Ignition system is all old fashioned points and rotors. Distributor looks genuine, original Lucas. Apart from static timing, I've not really touched it. Tempted to try setting up the points (even though they should be ok), so I know how to sort them if they fail when out.

The points, rotor arm, leads and coil have been all replaced recently by the previous owner. I'm not sure where he got them from, but I think Moss. No idea if they're any good quality, but I have heard mixed things about some of these parts. Tempted to lob some of those red rotors and points in that are supposed to be good, then leave the others as backups in the car.

Even though I like MGBs, they're not my absolute favourite car and there is stuff I'd rather have. However it's done what I wanted and learnt how to work on old shit while not having to hunt hard and far for parts and knowledge.

I like points, never broke down due to them as long as I replaced them on schedule. Plus like you say you can carry the old ones as spares.

Started back on weight training today. I'm damn sure I won't be able to move in the morning, but that's what a five year gap does for ya...

I just drove mine and let it fall apart around me.

I'm actually half tempted to do that now, once I get the alternator on. Spray all underseal on and especially around that rusty bit, then just get on with it.

Surely with a good coat of underseal, I should be able to get two years out of it?!

Said the bloke who bought it new...

I wouldn't use underseal - more likely to hold rust in on an old car surely . Cavity wax applied every year would be the best bet

What's the difference? Any cavity wax brand recommendations?

My next big purchase is rust remedy, paint and something to protect the underside.

Yes easily.

I use underseal. It hides everything and anything. As long as you know its safe underneath, why not?

£1 an Aerosol at Autojumbles. Wear gloves.

Oh and do buy a red rotor arm.

I have just realised that I have owned my car for seven years today. Not quite a record (Saab 900 8 years) but I think it is likely to be eventually.
