So you're a trainspotter and waiting an hour or so to see the flying Scotsman pass. Then this happens:

Made me giggle a lot.

(Sorry to others who may have seen this already as its a very much trending video!)

Replaced The Aero's thermostat and coolant temperature sensor this morning. I was expecting it to be an horrific job (hence why I've put it off for a year), but it was the easiest cooling system related job I have done on any car - even replacing the coolant with fresh stuff was achieved without any drama, largely due to Saab 9-5s having a self-bleeding cooling system.

I think I could have just got away with replacing the thermostat, as it has cured the problem that the car had, namely the temperature gauge needle taking ages to reach the centre of the gauge in cooler weather and occasionally dropping to zero after a few miles. However, the temperature sensor was easy to get to and didn't cost a lot, so it seemed polite to put a new one in while the cooling system was empty :)

Must change The Volvo's coolant before the weather turns, as it's been almost three years since it was last changed.

I'm surprised you've not have an EML from that.

From reading the workshop manual if the temp of the engine is too low after a certain period it flags the sensor as faulty, turns the gauge off, triggers the EML to light & reverts to open circuit emissions control.

Mind you, mine took from Bristol to nearly Doncaster to trigger it so depending on how far you drive....

When the temperature gauge dropped to zero, the EML would come on, but only when the weather was really cold. It was easily reset by removing and replacing the engine management system fuse :)

The only other times the EML has come on have been when the DI cassette was on the way out, when the intake air temperature sensor failed and when the throttle body needed to be reset. The latter caused great consternation, but was fixed at the roadside after consulting my Tech 2 (an absolute must for 9-5 owners if they can afford one and remember to carry it in the car at all times) and the internet.

I do remember mine going out after I'd fitted a new 'stat & driven for a day or two. I still cleared the stored code when my el'cheapo dongle turned up. I somehow managed to lose the one I'd ordered when I had the goona, so ordered the same again for the Saab.

Period number plates have arrived for the 305 - like the ones that appeared in the brochure when the car was new:

They're not on yet - I propped the rear plate up in the cut out to give me an idea. Pads are on order.

Net Registrations in Manchester made them up for me after taking my order at Cholmondeley, and they're the only place currently making reflective plastic riveted letter plates; if you buy plates from any of the other big names, they're subbed back to Net Registrations (which remain the cheapest).

Hey Alcy of only one Corporation, Where you get dat? Did I miss a collection, buying spree, woolarding in a pez shop, etc?

I have an inordinate interest in the 305 model. Fnar fnar ?? O.k. Perhaps not.

Any info on it ?

No wonder I didn't recognise it. :-)

The Labia and the 211 have departed, Clio went a few days ago. Down to about 7 now, 3 of which are of course Vauxhalls.

Were thee on t'bog or summat?

I've had it since November last year. It got through another MoT for the new owner to transfer the plate off and sell the car on.

Many dents down the nearside, but [bar one bit of outer sill] sound. Paint has been broken anywhere and FOAD gave me a new door skin.

Until last year it was a one owner car with a documented mileage.

Saturday-Wednesday I've used it as a removal van as I empty my Stockport unit out and transport 460 spares to its new buyer.

The 305 swallowed a full SXI/Turbo leather interior and wheels (Saturday), took me to Cholmondeley (Sunday), took four 440 doors on the return trip (Monday) and took me to work, dropped them off and then uplifted a bonnet and two pairs of wings plus some 960 parts (Tuesday), completed the return leg again Wednesday morning, had a rest that evening and is being readied for a trip up north across the Woodhead to get my parts this evening.

I've slept in the car overnight and used motorway services for showering and wi-fi.

It's been superb throughout - unfailingly reliable (and I doubt the Volvo could have carried much more or done it much faster).

It struggled with some of the steeper hills in Worcestershire and on the Woodhead but the ZHP14 allowed for some snappy manual down and upshifts so it kept climbing despite revving hard. I was down to second near Shesley Walsh and engine braking on the descent.

It's also done runs up Prescott Speed during the PSCUK Festival.

Losing the nob_van will wrench a bit but this is the more sensible 305 to keep; it's in far better condition and is probably as scarce being an automatic.

Did anyone get any pics of it at Cholmondeley? I didn't.

It'll need the front discs doing, a patch of welding, a battery clamp and a gearbox reversing switch for the MoT next month.

It's ace to drive, ill confirm that! Is the sidelight repair we did at sf17 still going?

Yep, still going strong. I got a matching cluster in the post about a week after Shitefest but the ruffgeezer/beko repair has been fine up this point.

The brakes are also still shite.

Estates are just vans with windows anyway.

Van has reinforcement round the rear so it can carry a bit more weight.

Unsurprisingly a van liner fits in there just fine.

I spent today on a training course at a business park, which turned out to actually be the former headquarters of Pilkingtons Glass in St Helens, I near did a wee when I walked through the slightly delapidated main door to be greeted by what must be the most amazingly oridinal intact 60's luxury office building left, wood paneling everywhere and obviously all sorts of structural/artistic glass. I think the trainer thought I was nuts as I couldn't stop cooing about signage etc. I was told that the top 2  floors are the directors suites and are intact and untouched since Pilks fucked off and nearly emptied my nuts, they are off limits but my camera is going with me tomorrow

Yeah it is listed in some form but parts of the outer site are very trashed sadly. I'll get a few pics hopefully

Today whilst after I dropped off the Peugeot 3008 I decided to go anf walk to where I was picking up the Nissan Qashqai (see; Modernz bit) as it was only half an hours away. As I got nearer I noticed the factory where they were making the new BINI when I suddenly realised that this was the place we're my Rover 800s were once built. This was the place they would have all once rolled out of. As I saw and took photos it felt rather strange, eerie but nostalgic and tinged with a bit of sadness.

How ironic.

I really must get one of my Mk1 Sterlings back on the road. It's becoming depressing just looking at them in old photos.

I'll never understand the mother.

She's said she'll pay for new rear light units for the Volvo seeing as she spent £270 on two coats for herself.

Can't complain at that!

Had a week off and didn't have anything planned till a few weeks back but booked the Eurostar and ended up in a lovely apartment in Brugge.

Hired this for two days.

I was a skinflint and ordered a c3 but they upgraded me to that fine stead. It was a 1.6hdi and initially felt dog slow. But after bombing around it for a couple of days I got to like it. Quite funky inside with a touch screen taking care of air con and sat nav. Nice little steering wheel, and cursing at 120kmh with cruise on and it was doing about 1800 rpm was lovely and quite.

Went to Dunkirk

Then onwards to Ypres

Then spent the next day on a random mission we had lunch in Gent and then had tea in a random place on the way back.

Brugge is lovely, but bloody hell its bleeding pricey. Spent a fortune.

I worked for the Belgian PO on an international shipping system for automated import tax etc... (boring I know!) -

BUT

On arrival in US - pickup was ina MONSTER Ford Heavy Duty right off the forecourt. Guy driving said "Hi, My name is Carl......... "

"I'm John - the UK guy living in Belgium"

"Oh - the guy with the GT6 racer"

"Yup - that's me"

"I'll have to show you my race cars too - we can do that once you're settled at the hotel - work tomorrow eh?"

He was only Carl Pilkington III (the third if I recall correctly)......... His 'racers' were a collection of lightweight Porsches, stripped out Ferrari and a south african V8 Alfetta he'd imported and gone to town on........ god I was in heaven! He even took me up to the local 'road track' - damned if I can remember the name in Jersey and I was let loose with the Porsche and Alfetta (I promptly bought a povo version when I got back)

God that family are minted!!!!! Thoroughly nice guy who worked 'for something to do' but a real laugh........ had a fantastic couple of weeks with him.

(apologies for name dropping - but I still go weak at the knees remembering the garage door opening!)
