What capacity is an R8 tank? I filled it from empty-ish (there's no light, and it took 35 litres) and after 300 miles it's back down to E. That's 39mpg, that can't be right, my foot is too heavy.

prolly 50 litres

as a badermatic the mpg is not that pleasant with the 1.6

Picked this up today. Only cost £60. 212k on the clock but it still pulls well. Does have a window made out of perspex but we'd all have ailments after that mileage right?!

Oh and the lovely AX went. Nice to meet you Colin.

I can say the ZX is indeed an absolute bargain-looked good and seemed to drive well (from a passenger point of view).

And the AX is great. Not had a car without electric windows, a rev counter, power steering, 5 speed gearbox or rear doors since 1982. Nor 50mpg from a pez car!

Most enjoyable-and good to meet Sam and be told of his upcoming purchase (which I wont tell anyone about).

Am in Scotchland at the moment. Motherwell to be exact. Tomorrow up to Aberdeen then bus/train to Inverness then an 8-hour drive home I reckon :| Looking forward to that I am not...

Well, Inverness isn't happening because the van I'm meant to be picking up has been postponed yet another day so I have a car from Blairgowrie to Merseyside. Going home in that though. This is almost a reverse of the trip I ded tae Scotland a year agoo. Och aye.

I have insured gaybod the pug ,which I am collecting tomorrow from djimbob. Was going to wait and tax it tomorrow with the slip. However my lad tells me if I tax it online and set up a direct debit . They take money after 30 days. So he says you then cancel direct debit online after 28 days and then set up a new one. So car shows has taxed but you don't pay. Is this true or will MI5 come hammering my door down at 5 am.

I pay monthly. They take it out within usually 14 days and first payment is usually double. Never cancelled it before but I assume you still pay for the time taxed and declare a sorn.

Arse. Nippa has run out of brakes.

Now discovering once again the downsides of unusual motoring. This is going to be costly...

Pretty ashamed by that, but I think both calipers are sticking. Still some pad left on the offside, but both sides feel stick to turn. Must admit I can't remember the last time I had the front wheels off. Probably hasn't happened since it had new steering rack gaiters fitted when we got it. Two years ago...

Oh and the 2CV isn't running right and has wipers that occasionally don't turn off, so probably not up to substitute duty, while the Bluebird is still in bits. That's a woeful 25% when it comes to running cars. Feeble.

This is ok, because (south of Leeds) mandates wearing short trousers.

I've just done Slough and back, the journey down was pretty bad - three separate instances of people trying to use Lane 4 on the M40 and chewing up the Armco. Presumably hitting standing water. One of them had the road closed by the wombles for 10 minutes, which wasn't bad because I was already late through oversleeping but now I had an excuse.

Way back went rapidly between bright sunshine and ZOMG WHERE DID THE ROAD GO and back again in the space of half a mile several times. And two more people stacking their cars on the M40 and M42.

Posted

Ah my m40 run wasn't that bad, there was standing water, and coming down the cut combined rain so hard you couldn't see with sun so bright the other side of the hill you couldn't see...

I might have had the upper hand though as I was doing 55 behind a royal mail lorry as my wheel doesn't shake at that speed, and the traffic wasn't going fast enough to do 67 which is the other side of the shake! L2 and 3 dropped speed very quickly at some points

Oh jeepers. The Nippa seems to have munched through a set of boots in under 8000 miles as well. Tracking must be out.

Euro Car Parts has some front pads for £15 (up to £33 if you want Brembo), but no discs.

Teeny-tiny update on the Astra

Polished the little bugger up over the weekend, being a pearlescent colour it came up really well indeed.

IMG_5197_zpsfssnlk9q.jpg

I went across to the scrappy's and purchased a second-hand bonnet cable and a set of genuine Astra mats for just £10. The driver's mat is worn out so I'm after a replacement. The other three came up like new with a scrub. Turns out there are already locking 'pins' in the carpet which suggests they had mats like this fitted when the car was new.

The bonnet cable was stretched beyond repair so it was binned and a new cable installed, not too much of a taxing job - the only fiddly bit was seating the grommet that goes on the bulkhead. The reason why the bonnet wouldn't open became clear. The adjusting clip that holds the cable taut was completely missing, so the cable just moved about where it felt like it. Clip fitted and now the bonnet opens and closes perfectly.

I have also started to dabble with adding OEM stuff. I managed to find an indicator stalk with cruise control in my box of bits, which I have fitted. Just need to Tech-2 it and I will then have working cruise! (clutch switch is present)

And I've bought a replacement turbo, in good working order for a bargain price. No apparent wear or play in the turbine rotors so all seems okay. I will farm this job out to my mechanic, who will then M.o.T it once it's been done. Then it should* be ready to drive again....

Have a moody picture.

Yeah, I got lazy, because it was clocking up fewer than 3000 miles a year. It's been doing rather more lately, and I hadn't accounted for that. Plus, the service I gave it a couple of months ago was little more than throwing fresh oil and filters at it in a blind panic, because life has been so busy. It's why the 2CV's paint job STILL isn't finished. In fact, that's due a service in another 3000 miles. Then there's the Bluebird to get finished, and the Honda still needs its oil and fuel filters fitting. I think maybe I need to hurl some more jobs to the local(ish) garage...

Er yeah. Basically, I entered Scotland on Monday evening and left around 4pm, it hadn't stopped raining the whole time I was there. In Aberdeen, one of my shoes got wet inside, the other one was almost as wet inside so after getting my car from Blairgowrie, I ended up driving home from around Carlisle in my socks to let both my feet, socks and shoes dry out.

If I had been anywhere near AS today I might have been able to help there. I've just got back from Stranraer.

It's been pissing it down everywhere to be fair. We had a massive downpour here, just as the gas bottle needed changing...
