It's a brave man that uses sniff when hand cranking.

Is the fracture clinic open on a Sunday?

FWIW why are you using sniff on a rebuilt engine? Surely just crank it a bit to get the oil round and a bit of fuel and just go for the fire up.

Well, you can anticipate ice. I can't just not go out in the car because the road's a bit wet.

I can anticipate ice. You may be a little short on experience.

Makes no difference though we will both slide.

I'm half crapping myself TBH...Have you ever cranked a v twin ?  We,ve got some sniff to help it start ,and

it's got a retard ignition lever .   Wot's that some might say   :?

Is there not a brass? bush somewhere on those, that shears off just after its broke your wrist.

Thinking about it, might be a brass helical gear.

Boost leak after whatever measures the boost pressure? That'd cause overfuelling etc

Can't remember if this engine does it but a few vw have temp senders which like to die without telling you, so the car thinks it is cold all the time.

Thanks for your help gents!!

Will look into the things you have said! Hopefully it’s an easy fix! It’s had new cams as there chocolate on the pd150 and I’m reading horror stories of people not adjusting the injector lash? And never solving the problem etc!

I don’t like issues with cars like them tip top

Forget eezi start with hand cranking - dangerous. Don't piss about, just tow it around until it runs!

(Plugs out, hand crank until you know the oil is going where it should before trying to start it)

Not seeing the need for easystart on a fresh engine either, that's just for fucked old wreaks.

It is a fucked old wreck!    Mog update... it's been cranked and cranked by the 70 year old farmer owner, on and off for the last week ,not even a pop ..Previous to this ,the heads had gone porous  , and been away  to be welded and resin impregnated,  and then replaced  by him. With molegrips and hammer...

I went over this morning being a fit 56 year old...and with a gauntlet , and 2 knee pads on me wrist...not a pop or a bang either !! Out with the LH plug , squirt of ether , and I soon had the LH cylinder firing , but wouldn't continue to run. The farmer's jumping up and down with delight !!  I decided the RH was having the same treatment . I just wanted to make sure it was capable of firing , I wanted a "pop" from that cylinder .So I left out the LH plug ...squirted ether in the RH cylinder , but on cranking realised it had zilch compression ! And the rockers had no backlash , the valves wasn't closing  ...Out with the Matchless book.. To adjust tappet ,you pull up those chrome tubes, and adjust the length off the pushrod, not the rocker pads .. Anyway, an hour later they're all a crack loose..and I start cranking it again . And the fucker  started with a Banger de bang bang bang de bang pop pop pop bang.....  and stopped :-( . And there's cloulds of smoke :-D  :-D ...and we were dead chuffed :-D . And notice there' fuel pissing out the Amal , and I didn't want a fire ,so that came off and new copper washers fitted . Had a few more bangs after , its just a case of blowing out the cobwebs ,I'm sure ,but  were so shagged out , or our right arms were , we left it there .. till another day . Can't see why it won't go though .

Could be bump started , but the barn/shed  is up a steep a hill, and if it didn't go , there's no way of easily getting it back in , and you can't leave it outside in the yard...

Far more boring update from me. I washed half of the fleet. The biggest and smallest half. Had to get rid of that bloody Saharan dust...

Been mostly chipping away at the 1.6 hdi in the 307 today.

The oil is pretty gloopy in there. I know I should sell the nice new turbo that's on it plus the alloys and scrap the rest......but it can't hurt to at least have a wee look...and I haven't spent anything on it yet..

I know to do it properly all the oilways need to be pristine, the sump dropped, strainer / oil pump stripped and cleaned etc

And it still might blow another turbo

Thinking of pouring a load of diesel in the head and leaving it to soak for a few days?8e27741a13e2a7601c9b4cc9bc878009.jpg9c431ba8700baecf918d95b7b98647e7.jpg

In XM news I'm tempted to sell while it has an MOT and is running sweetly. I'm just not using it. However if there was someone mad enough to swap a grotty Mx5 I might be tempted

I've got that dust all over the Volvo from that weird storm day. It looks even worse since it's rained and left dusty streaks down it.

Makes you wonder what your breathing in! Half the Saharan desert in your lungs!

Progress with the 1.8 mondeo today. Inlet manifold off, sheared bolt removed from head, pcv breather and egr stripped and cleaned, all back together, runs lovely but rev it hard when warm and there's a bit of blue smoke still. I'm going to try it on comma motorsport 5w50 and see fit that helps and beyond that it put it down to oil control rings or top end damage from eating its inlet manifold flaps.

A compression test would be a step further but it passed the emissions fine and at the end of the day it's a £160 mondeo.

Xantia has responded well to having the wastegate closed up a bit and the pump fettled.

It's quite a laugh now.

I'm looking at a Gt2052s turbo already. Much smaller shaft size so spools much faster, with more blow to boot.

My last evening in the cottage I half restored before my ex stole it & all my investment off me.

It's a bloody strange feeling, I'm glad to get away from her destroying my life but I'm gonna miss this place and still wish I could finish it.

First pic of my 'GW' plate cars together. Both are in for their MoTs next week. I've checked them over and the basics are covered, and I know the Cavalier will need a few bits doing. I rubbed down and greased the brake pipes on the Mazda, so me ferrules don't get an advisory, and fingers crossed it doesn't need too much. Whilst underneath I noticed it's a bit crusty, so a mucky rustproofing session is on the cards.

Replaced the spark plugs and HTs on the Cav in an attempt to improve the erratic idle, still no change. After cleaning the throttle body, replacing the ICV, trying a different air flow meter and god knows what else I'll just live with it.

Bunged a new rocker cover gasket on the 626 and gave the cover a quick degrease as it was covered in splatter. Changed the oil and only around 3 litres drained out. Not surprising really as much of it seems to be on the outside. The sump gasket also needs doing so that's a job for another day.

Oilyness beforehand

That'll do. Don't want to go all two-bucket...

My most viewed video from the past 28 days? Sorry Egg, but it's the ex-Moog Vel Satis.

Though the Mondeo came in third! (the Lexus joining the fleet in second place).

I was playing about in mice shit and spiders this afternoon, I went over to my friends barn that he's clearing out as the demolition has started, the infamous Ital van lives in this barn and we wanted to get it running and ready to move to another barn ready to sell, since i last saw it he's cleaned and rebuilt the carb and refitted it, today after not touching it for over a month with the flick of a key it fired up and ran as sweet as anything, considering that it hasn't ran since around 2000 time that's remarkable, it even drives and stops!.

It's been of the road since 1993 and in the barn since the late 90's.

I really would like to buy this myself but it needs quite a bit of welding and i can't weld, my mechanics isn't great either and i have no use for a van so the plan is to move it to a different barn and then clean it up and sell it, that's if my friend doesn't have it.

Whilst we was on a roll we had a go on the 1942 Fordson tractor in the corner, again untouched since the late 90's we fitted a small petrol tank, cleaned the magneto and cranked the handle and amazingly it fired into life!.

It fired a few cobwebs out the exhaust too! It was bought for spares but someone interested in it to restore.

Also in another barn was this Thames van, it's been in there over 30 years, it was the farm hack before being taken of the road, some college lads who rented the barn made a start on it but it hasn't been touched since they left over 25 years ago.

It was likely this could be scrapped but I've told them it's worth money and saving so I'm keeping an ear open for a buyer.

and lastly this Norman Nippy was in the same barn, it belonged to the farmer when new but he hasn't touched it since it came of the road in 1970, I'm tempted to see if i can have this, i haven't the first clue about bikes mind you! I don't even know what year it is?. Maybe 1964ish?.

That Norman Nippy is ace! It's a Mk IV, which I reckon means it's 1961 at newest, cos the Mk V was around by 1962.

Amazingly it's still on the DVLA system and it's indeed a 1961, 5000 miles on the clock, I might see if i can have it, it doesn't seem to be worth very much looking on ebay?.

I'd say about £250, more to a plate rapist sadly.

WIFE_CMS is currently in an operating theatre, under a general anaesthetic, hopefully giving birth to our first child.

By a bizarre twist of fate, this occurs on the 21st birthday of the Volvo 850 we drove to hospital in, and indeed the same 850 he'll be going home in.

I am fucking shitting myself.

Poor Trigger. I was about to heap praise on his barn find bonanza, but I find myself wishing you the best instead! Best wishes to you, Mrs CMS and baby CMS.

Very best of luck all the CMS crew....... hope everything goes swimmingly.

Shitting yourself is the usual reaction - I haven't spoken to a single mate of mine who wasn't in deep dread and utter panic.

It's well worth it though and an absolute blast..... wroth every second of the hard work those nights will seem.

HGF was confirmed on the little Pug 207, just adjacent to number 4 cylinder. Stripped it on Friday, had the head checked and skimmed (took 7 thou' off) and rebuilt it over the weekend.

On running it up the water level would rise in the expansion bottle and then rise to the very top on key-off when hot. A check of the top hose showed no pressure in the system.

Changed the pressure cap and ran again from cold and everything is back to normal, coolant level remains at the max mark, it doesn't rise on key-off and I can feel pressure in the top hose, happy days.

HGF photo's;

By the sound of it, JR_CMS is coming out of the side door.

Congrats Mr & Mrs CMS.
