Ok I was just trying to keep it running a bit longer without giving too much away, but here is some more.

I'm with Alcyone on this one. It's definitely a Datsun Violet. Could be a 160J.

Anyway, latest 2CV happenings. It broke!

Owed a holiday day today and got a few jobs to do that need some muscle. Fire in, Austin shortly to be intimate with some spanners while Steam gets up.

Yes, but they were always rare. Mash, formerly of this parish, has one. It's lovely. Possibly Ratdat too.

They always seemed to be dark metallic blue or green.

Got my renewal quote through from Flux for the citroen - £674! Considering I paid just a shade over £200 last year thats taking the piss somewhat

Any decent classic insurers out there? My annual mileage on the XM looks to be less than 2000...

And a quick online quote with Footman James later has given me a figure of £147 fully comp for the year.....are FJ any good to deal with?

They're ok. Bit big these days, so can be frustrating to deal with. I'd try Peter James or Peter S Taylor myself.

Did they have those metal trims that looked really cool?

It is normal to buy the thing you say you don't like/want, at least on here, but if you're in a spot where you want less stress perhaps at least trying to avoid buying the very thing you say you don't like is a better option.

Petrol VWs, Skodas and Fords can be a reasonable second-hand purchase for the same sort of coin with none of the diesel-French bother.

I've got two insured with footman James. No complaints but you do need to talk to them each year when the premium goes up 10%.

Well I'm about to break mine, albeit in 1.6 hdi 110bhp form.....

Was a great car till the turbo shat itself then the variable valve timing chain shat itself......

My 200k mile Merc 300SE oil pressure used to noticeably drop on hot idle as the oil got older then jump back up when it was changed. The owners forum said pressure at 1500 rpm was the important bit, not at tickover.. My gauge dithered about all over at idle anyway.

Thanks. It's what my merc mechanic said last night when I collared him outside the neighbour's ML350.

Doesn't make my blood pressure any better though when pressure drops and temp goes the other way :-)

Still waiting on confirmation but hopefully my contract has been extended for a year in my job, and I'll get a pay rise. The Civic has been a loyal servant but the 60 mile motorway commute is pushing it to the limit so really time for an upgrade. Unfortunately I'm a bit constrained by driveway space so can't fit anything larger on there. It might be considered heresy, but perhaps a diesel hot hatch would be a good replacement?

The police rang today to tell me that they had my Foster child in custody. He will be held overnight and then appear in court tomorrow. Shame really has we had a chat this morning about what his future holds if he carries on like he is doing. You can lead a horse to water ETC..

I feel your pain (vicariously, obvz)

I see no one has picked up & run with this...

Does sound a teence like "f#ck, hire co coming for the weekend loaner and I've just noticed a crease in the door - wasn't like that when I parked it an hour ago - Arsebiscuits!"

Perhaps its just me....

Re the datsun 160j. My dad had a bright red 160j sss. Reg number gvc259n. He chopped in a vauxhall Victor, pvj543h to buy it. A 180b estate was eventually purchased as my mum constantly nagged him for driving like he'd stole it all the time.

I had an Audi 3speed auto that when left much more than a day would drain it's torque converter into the transmission sump.

If checked before starting the engine, the oil level was really high.

It would make a whirring noise for a bit and then slowly pick up drive as the 'convertor filled.

I ignored the problem, it didn't go away but it didn't get any worse either in the 5 years I drove it.

**The transmission would also go into neutral on harsh right-hand bends, ie roundabouts. Oil-surge I suppose. Fuck knows why I put up with the bastard thing for so long.

To update the thread on my Jag's transmission saga - and thank everyone who has helped me here, I wrote this in my XJ40's thread a minute or two ago and thought I would post it here:

I wanted to make absolutely sure (or as certain as I could be without removing the sump) that there was no coolant crossing over into the transmission from the radiator, so I removed 2 litres of ATF this afternoon with a Pela 6000 suction pump. Dropping the sump would have been a lot better, but I have some historic spinal problems which can be upset by going under the car and don't have any axle stands to hand, so sucking out a bit had to do!

I reasoned that if coolant was getting in to the transmission then it would most likely mix with the atf resulting in an oleaginous mess, or separate with the atf floating on the coolant. Either way, since the dipstick enters the pan low down, then I would see evidence of coolant if there was any - or perhaps burned fluid.

The atf I removed looked to be in good condition with no burning and no evidence of coolant. So I decided to start the car. And it started ...normally! There was perhaps a little more vibration than usual for a second, but nothing striking and the car settled to a normal and smooth idle with no strange noises from the transmission. Drive and Reverse engaged normally - there was nothing to suggest that there had been a problem of any kind.

So it is either a self-fixing Jaguar or a neurotic owner  - you decide!  I will have the transmission checked out though, to determine the cause of the leak (which appears to have stopped) and to discover if the loss of drive was a one-off due to a draining torque converter not having refilled, or whether it is a harbinger of problems to come.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me on this - I do appreciate it!

Imagine what an utter berk I would have felt if I had called out a tow ruck to take it to a garage, then tried in vain to push all of its 1950 kilos up the drive, given up and then started the car and found there was nothing wrong with it!!

You're right there - I don't remember ever seeing one which wasn't dark blue or dark green metallic.

That sounds to be a difficult situation.

Agh, I did a silly (but probably wise) purchase.

Top of the range 90s Frenchie incoming....

In other news I've decided the only other old car I want is a ZX Volcane.

So is it a Safrane or an XM, or perhaps a 605?

In a rare fit of enthusiasm, I washed the Bluebird again.

Remarkably, I also set about cleaning the interior up a bit, then even vacuumed it out. Then I also vacuumed out the Proton. I'm not sure what is wrong with me.

Honda 'buyer' claims I'll have a deposit today or tomorrow. If there's nowt by 6pm tomorrow, then the Proton is getting SORNed and the Honda can come back on the road. Utterly pointless having it sitting around doing nowt. We'll see what happens, but I fear the Proton really needs to move on, so may re-initiate the ROFFLE.
