I think timing faffery is on mechanical TDIs to time the pump to the cam/crank.

On these there is a pin to lock the cam (floating pulley) and a thing to lock the crank and that's it.

Access looks poor in the pictures but the whole front end comes off pretty easily, much better than trying to poke spanners down the inner wing on a transverse installation.

This is what I was thinking of:

Not reqd if you do the mechanical bits correctly

The 2.5 tdi in the t4 however is a right prick to time correctly and won't even start unless you set it up with a dti in the pumps arse. Then you fine tune while running on vdcs

That looks nice, would love to go all two bucket wrong on with that interior.

I think the 5spd box came in the 130pd flavour too and 6spd was a cost option. When I last looked at getting one of these, there were loads of 6spd cars with busted boxes but no 5spd. The folklore online is that the 6spd is a 5spd box where they grafted in an extra ratio.

Same platform - I had a B6 Audi A4 TDI 130 with a 5 speed box a couple of cars ago, and fifth was a pain at lower motorway speeds - it was best somewhere between fourth and fifth! I prefer the six speed box tbh - never had any issue with them over the years.

I do like Passats soggy floors and random electrical faults aside. I guess that's a 100bhp given your lack of red D's and i's under the bonnet?

I manged to refit the rear ashtray and power socket and they still open and close.

I currently have the battery on charge as although it starts it does turn over a bit slowly - a new battery may be on the cards. I checked it with my meter snd it showed a lowly 11.6v.

Handsome looking cars, these, especially pre-facelift. They do seem to go on forever if looked after.

It's a 130.

I thought it was same as golfs and Ibiza's, whereas the 100pd's are five speed and 130pd's 6 speed.

You've got the right mindset there, service it but spend the minimum then run it till it drops. Much better car than the Vectra, ive driven both and I'd have the B5 Passat anyday. Good luck with it hopefully it will do you a good turn.

My eldest says he preferred the vectra.

And he did'nt like the vectra.

Cant add much other than to say clearly VW mingebaggery was in play even in 2004, a 'Highline' which would suggest a very high spec Passat, as would the leather, but no rain sensor/auto lights/auto wipers which are the mark of a true high spec Passat.

Only VW could call a spec Highline, include leather and still make it poorly equipped otherwise.

They do drive well if the suspension isnt all worn, and seem to be a helluva lot more reliable and less troublesome than the shit 2.0 CR TDis they inflicted on the later ones.

Didnt think there was a massively better driving experience than a Vectra C though having driven several examples of both when they were relatively new and not worn out.

I've never really understood the VAG hate on here to be honest.

There is no hate here - merely firmly held preferences, sometimes strongly expressed.

Hope you have more luck with this one. The odds are more in your favour I think.

This seems much better than the very similar-looking one I recently acquired...
