Just got home from an epic 10 mile collection of my latest car. I now have in my possession a set of Porsche keys

Which were accidentally left in the glovebox of the 2006 Golf GT diesel I've bought

The Civic has been a fine servant, but with an 80 mile daily commute on the motorway I wanted something a bit more suitable. It's the 140bhp engine so decent level of performance and a fair bit of standard kit as well. Probably quite low on the shite scale though as it's the newest car I've ever bought.

Ha that’s just reminded me of when I had a Mercedes key ring on the set of keys I had for a Sierra when I’d be about 17 in the hope of fooling young ladies into thinking I had a Merc. What the fuck was I thinking... what planet was I on?

Ohhh I was hoping for some germanic chod

Does the mk.5 count as chod yet? It still seems really modern to me, although not helped by the fact the subsequent models look so similar

You have the keys, you know where it is (probably). Some people in Africa can afford a Porsche.

Have you thought of taking up a new hobby in the export business ? Just imagine the price premium for one with the steering column and lock intact ! And a key  8)

As for the VW it should be a good buy for a long commute.

From what I could tell the 140s didn't get a DPF until a few years later?

Also just had a very grateful seller pop round and collect the keys to their Porsche

So it is possible to move on from an early 00's Civic then? My 2003 example just won't give up on me, it too has been used for Motorway commuting 5 days a week 170 mile daily round trip and never missed a beat in over two years; following a change of job it now it stands idle 5 days a week and still starts first turn of the key, whatever the weather, I really want to replace it with something more interesting but it would feel like kicking a trusted old friend in the gonads,

The VW looks great by the way, hope it serves you well, I've never bettered 42mpg from my Honda whether I hammer it to death or drive like a pensioner on Mogadon it doesn't seem to change, the Golf should see 50 mpg easily.

A friend once left her (other) car keys in the door pocket of a Rover 216 floppytop she sold.

Had to trek 60 miles each way to go and get them back.

Well maybe I should have hung on to the Porsche key, since I got in it this evening and had a total FTP. Just getting a rapid clicking sound which I'm guessing is the starter solenoid. I was out fitting a new stereo so wondered if I'd drained the battery, but lights etc all seem to work fine. Also looks like one of the rear brakes is sticking, since one set of pads have substantially less material than the others. Sigh.

Can help with both these things a my Jetta is effectively a booted version of this, even in terms of spec, Jetta Sport being the equivalent of a Golf GT Sport (I think, they did GT, Sport and combined GT Sport spec) and even has the same alloys etc.

Earlier Golfs if having a head unit swap need a newer can gateway otherwise it will cause battery drain issues. All my stuff works fine with a drained battery too, sticking rear calipers are common on mk5s and other cars on the platform like Jetta, Scirocco, Eos, Touran etc. And infact I just had to have a new recon genuine VW caliper and new discs and pads fitted earlier for this very reason.

Be careful with the wheels, they are made of chocolate so buckle easily, they are sought after And hard to get hold of, rare to find, and expensive even 2nd hand and scruffy down to the fact that brand new they are £495 each (I kid you not!!)

Check for rusty front wings, if they are gone you may just scrape in for brand new ones on the corrosion warranty as it’s a known issue thousands of us have had done.

They are nice cars when they are tidy, fault free and working right, hence why they got such good reviews when new, they were better built (rust aside), nicer inside, smoother, more refined, nicer to drive than a mk2 Focus, Astra, French stuff, etc and classier than Jap stuff but they are unreliable, troublesome, and expensive parts when they aren’t right.

I've read about those parties but It's a bit optimistic to think the cougars you were after would think you had a merc at 17

Mark 5 Golf rust, electrical issues and engine dramas - most certainly shite. Not quite at Mark 4 throwaway $$$ yet though.

A nice spec diesel with unsullied front wings* is alright though.

*Good luck with that.

Just buy a newer version can gateway from a later car, heap enough and plentiful, I think one from a post-57 plate car will solve all the issues with battery drain from radio.

Wouldn't it have to be coded to the car though? I'm so glad we moved away from the traditional method of wiring a stereo with a switched live, permanent live and a ground though. This new way is so much better.

The Mk5 is to my eyes the last really good looking Golf. Apparently anything on AS has to be 10 years or less to go in the "Modern" section, but I put both my own 2007 Citroen C4 VTS and Mrs Concern's Renner Moodus in there. Just because.

Does a booted Jetta version of the mk5 in Sport (top trim) spec so cruise, auto lights/wipers, self dim interior mirror, all round leafy windows, 17” alloys blah de blah, brand new genuine VW front wings last year, brand new genuine rear lower suspension arms, full proper 4 wheel alignment set up, new brakes and coil springs, etc recent full service and an mot with no advisories (which wasn’t a hooky one) count as ‘alright’ because everyone’s still telling me it’s shit.

I can’t help but sorta like it just for being (for a modern) kinda unusual and obscure so potential future shite?

Paula Abdul did a song about that. One step forward, two steps back iirc.

It is, but I love the way all the bits that fail/drop off on VAG stuff is 'consumable' but same bits rarely fail on Jap cars.

I really don't 'get' VAG stuff. There's a 2003 A4 Avant 1.9 TDous arriving soon however if it's cheap enough. (£150)

I've now run the permanent live from the module to a switched one, but lacking a multimeter that will read amps I will just have to wait a few hours and see if it's still draining. I have noticed that the car gives a permanent live on the ISO block as well, instead of the traditional live and switched. Air vents decided to collapse into about 20 component pieces as I took them out, and even though I just lifted the a-pillar trim back to fit the DAB and dashcam wires, it's now showing an airbag fault. All I wanted to do was listen to my ipod in the car.......

Did you disconnect the passenger airbag off warning light, when getting to the radio and then turn the ignition on? If so, that can do it. Will require diagnostic tool to clear.

Yes I did to get better access to the radio. Don't have a diagnostic tool but at least I know the reason

That one caught me out too, didn’t realise disconnecting the little indicator below the hazard switch saying Passengef Airbag off would trigger airbag fault warnings and lights, until I did it and found out the hard way.
