Shitefest 2018 (U.K.) Chez Saabnut 9-10th june

In a true to form move, reading the above reminded me that about 3 years ago I decided my old gas BBQ was beyond its best, mainly to being left outside all year round and the gas control valves for the burners having seized. In a true to Saabnut it was dumped around the back, awaiting its final journey, unmoved for over 3 years.

I thought I would dig it out, THEN worry about finding a gas bottle. Fought my way in and found it was heavier than expected - ah, that would be the still connected gas bottle then!

Dragged it out, lit using the trusty burning kitchen roll method and managed to get gas out of both burners. After about 3 minutes it started producing smoke, and opening the top I was met by a wall of heat and the remains of the grass that had grown into it.

So it works, but is basically on/off and you are welcome to make use of it. I have installed a kettle and a toaster in the PortaCludgy so we should be good to go.

Sounds ideal! If the gas stuff does pack up we can just rip it all out and use wood...

If anyone can't find the place, just get to the Northern end of the Forth Crossing and follow the trail of LHM, mineral oil and rusty coolant.

I'll be taking a small barbecue with me. I refurbished it yesterday with a coat of rust converter and 3 coats of high temperature paint.

It's the size of a large plant pot. It burns wood in the bottom part, then halfway up it has a grid for charcoal, then the cooking grid on top.

I have plenty of charcoal, and a small amount of kindling. Have you got any wooden things that need burned, Saabnut? :D

Also, a kettle and toaster on hand? Luxury! I may make use of those, then. At least the kettle anyway.

I'm taking a Coleman stove that runs on petrol, is anyone bringing petrol?

I have this daft idea to go and bag a couple of Munros (park at the Lecht - edit: Glenshee Ski Centre) on the Saturday...

Yes, but they don't have a 2000-odd-foot head start...like parking at the Lecht (edit: Glenshee) does. I'm really not fit enough for a sea-level start at the moment ;-)

Thornliebank auctions? :-D

I'm planning on temporary membership of the SVM. In a Toyota. Glasgow tomorrow. Feeling a bit better about the Starlet after a pre-trip hoon that involved overtaking a Mazda MX-5. It's a while since I drove anything with actual power! (he said, about a car which has 75bhp).

A similar level of tat, certainly!

It's a bloody saloon too. Can't even sleep in the sodding thing.

It's a shit poor boring excuse but I am gutted not to be able to make this years event, Shitefest is always one of the highlights of my old car calendar, sadly having a young family combined with such a long distance (roughly 1100 miles in a weekend) and nothing I'd particularly like to take that far means I'll have to pass this year.

I'm taking the Van to Buckfastleigh in Devon next month so that will be my yearly adventure instead. Have a great time everyone. :)

Fair enough trigger.

But 1,100 miles in a weekend does not fly as an excuse with me (or any of the Scotoshiters, I imagine). I did 1,200 miles in a weekend to get to Shitefest 2016. :P

I, however, do not have a young family to look after. So you've got me there. :D

Will you be at FoTU with the van, though? I'll be getting a flight down to Birmingham and staying with RantingYoof in order to go to the FoTU. My geography of England is terrible, BTW, so I've no idea how near or far you are in relation to FoTU.

I aim to be there on Friday afternoon and will be bringing my usual paraffin based cooking and lighting equipment (now with added bigger stove!).

I plan to stop off at Dundee for supplies/bus perving, meet up there?
