What's a knackered Bini worth (if anything)?

Recommended Posts

Been asked by a friend what their knackered Bini is worth and what to do with it, I know nothing about these cars' values either running or kippered, are there any Bini enthusiasts on here?  Or does anyone have any interest in it (car is in South Devon).

It's a 2003 '52' reg Mini Cooper 1.6 petrol in black, with leather seats apparently.  82,000 miles.  Apparently it needs a new engine (??) and the owner's been quoted £1500 parts and £700 labour to fix it; is drivable over short distances but leaks out all the oil after not too many miles.  To me it's worth the square root of feck all, just depends what they're like as parts donors I suppose.

Might be worth something to the guys that race them. There is a series up here, when my mate did it he used to buy ones like this for spare panels.

Well a quick scan on Autotrader see's loads of serviceable examples at about the grand mark. So I guess it's worth £2-300 as a scrapper maybe?

If they want another, buy one at a grand, swap all the better bits off the other one then sell the knackered one off. Depends if they can be arsed or not I suppose.

I recently valued a running if tatty '05 Cooper S at £1300

So yes, scrap value - if running we will pay £125 for them.

As mentioned above, maybe a racer may be interested for a little more than scrap value.

take out the BCM module and related bits that make the car work , they get water damage and fail and is a nice postable package for some one wanting to save £400 , offer interior trim and lights on gumtree  , scrap the rest and get another £50 -100 that way

Yep I’d go with scrap. All the value has fallen out of the early Binis, there truly is one for every budget, probably as they’re still making Binis of a sort, and the oldest ones are 16 years old(!!!) now. Something even the Nuova 500 hasn’t managed yet (give it a couple of years and 07 500s will be sub-£1000 I bet).

£400 at very best.

Never even sat in one, but they appeal to me aesthetically, both interior and exterior, at least most models, especially the early ones.

I'm waiting for the day an auto in petrol flavour comes in at my price range (stunningly low), and i'll be all over it ;)

The fact my good friend runs a classic Mini restoration business and hates the "new" ones with a passion is totally underlying this love affair and will keep it going thru all sorts of future tribulations :)

If it were local and I could be arsed, and I could get a replacement engine with a 90 day warranty off ebay for £250, and the front end just easily unbolted, and could be one of the easiest engine swaps ever, I'd give £250 for it, fix it and flog it for £1200

But the first 2 are reasons why not.

If you look at the design of the front end the whole bumper assembly complete with cross member and radiator comes off with 4 (or maybe more) bolts. Making access VERY easy.

Of course it will have the Midlands gearbox, but you can't have everything gettrag

That's uncharacteristically generous of you, Billy!!

Seriously, though, I would have thought full leather (if it is full) would yield a couple of hundred quid, then the relevant electronic bits, and a few bits of trim, if anyone could be arsed.

If it gets broken, and has a chrome grille, I'd have that for a few quid, for mine*.

*technically it's Mrs S's, but seeing as she's now claimed the Alfa, I'm using it, and actually quite like it.

Why worry about warranty on the engine if you're selling it? So long as it runs OK, and you're not a trader, there's no comeback on you if it dies 89 days later.

Because unless you can see it running, an unwarranted engine will be knackered

Mini engines are a bastard to swap.

This one is clearly scrap, but will break quite well. A working Midland box, PAS pump, bonnet plus other stuff - but UPullit is rammed with these now. They are now at scrapyard time so you need to keep prices low. Scrap cars contain scrap parts at this age........

I'd give 100 quid for it if it were anywhere near me, but wouldn't expect to make more than 500 quid profit so bordering on a waste of time.

The trouble is breaking cars is mosty shit. Yeah, everyone else seems to be able to sell their interior for £200 or something, but when you advertise them they either end up making £1.14 on eBay, or sitting in your garden under a CPT as a constant daily reminder of what a failure you are at everything as your missus is only too keen to remind you.

Hence my saying "if anyone could be arsed". After breaking one car, I probably couldn't be arsed again unless I was just taking a few easy (and preferably already sold) bits and scrapping the rest.

To be honest, as far as BINIs are concerned, I think now is the time that all the shit ones will disappear, and the good ones will soon start becoming worth a bit more. This one, unfortunately, will probably soon be China-bound.

+1.

I think it's going to be a while before they're fetching good money though.

Thanks for all the input, much as I thought.  Will probably get them to get a price from one of the better breakers down here.

I think they're a bit like new shape beatles. There's a pub I went to in London which has this place alongside it.

Minor faults write these and Golfs in posh frocks off quite easily at this age

You’ll be waiting a while unless you want a Cooper S (and they’re not too common in auto), the Cooper/One auto was CVT until 2007 and they have a habit of shitting themselves. Six speed AW torque converter box across the range for the R56, but they seem to start about £4.5k at the moment.

Source: the mother’s on her second R56 (auto Cooper S).

I can wait until the stars are correctly aligned for this momentous event ;)

Not too worried about dodgy boxes, had a few of them in my time, notably the Posh Allegro (twice) and an original Mini, they surely can't be worse than them buggers :)

Talking of scrap MINIS, here's one that made it's final journey today:
