Mk6 Escorts

I hope you're not getting too attached to the idea of an Escort. Even I can't pretend they're anything other than low-commitment transport (Which is why i kinda like them). I think you may be disappointed when you eventually find one and have a look at it,

Crikey.

Wanting a specific model/trim level I can kind of understand....Im more of a buy whatever fits my budget and looks ok kind of person, but holding out for a car sold by a specific dealership? thats extra....uh....special....even for this place.

SPEAKING OF NUMBER PLATES

I was behind some forgettable 2006ish thing this morning, and it had Arnold Clark on the rear one.
I did a surprise

Think I found one, just need to grow a bigger pair and knock on the door and persuade the owner to sell me it: This may be difficult as the owner only changed a couple of months ago according to cazana, from when I last saw it.

For some reason the road tax was very high on the last run of escorts when they went to emissions based as that one will be.

Holy fuck! when you said high road tax I thought you meant maybe £170/175 a year, just checked that one and its tax bracket J, emissions are 195g/km of co2 making it £280 a year, fucking hell!!

Guess that ones out the window then, be looking for a pre March 2001 Escort then.

EDIT: Scrap that, seems it doesnt matter when it was registered, a 1.6 Escort is £245 per year on a pre-2001 so doesnt make much difference. Escort 1.6s are what 1587cc? anything under 1549cc is £150 which seems much more reasonable. Bastards!

What are 1.4 mk6 Escorts like, even worse?

Buy on condition, not on the price of the road tax, the price difference is small change if you buy a bad one.

lol, My Rover is £270 a year

Yes, all Escrots will be dear to 'tax' unfortunately; I am in the same boat with my 1995 1686cc Isuzu Astra-F. You have to decide if it's worth it to you.  I would say no 1.6 mk6 Escort would be worth running from a financial point of view, no decent performance or economy to justify its existence...

That's only my opinion though. If you want one, go for it.

My Astra-F survives with me because it's rust free and has returned an average of 55mpg in the 4 years I've owned it, but I appreciate most people would simply scrap it because of what it is.

Most people think the only redeeming quality of the later Escorts was the 16v Zetec motors. Having said that, there's a nice looking 1.4 LX mk5.5 on eBay; maybe take a look and see if you like it?

I always thought my 1.6 16v (90hp) needed a but more so I'd not be too keen on a 1.4 8v (70).

Its been a long time since I owned a pre-2001 car bigger than a 1.6 and I remember it being about £160/170, didnt think it wouldve went up that much over the years.

I did have a 52 plate mk4 Astra which was £180 last time I taxed it back in 2009, and I think my 05 plate mk5 Astra was £225 for the year, didnt think a 1.6 Escort would be more than that.

PS shame your Kia isnt a bit earlier as being a 1.5 (im guessing here as most Shumas were 1.5?) it wouldve got the £150 tax.

It is a 1598 so even if it was a bit older would be the £245 or thereabouts i think.

1.6 Zetec was a decent unit though, and I didn't find it overly thirsty - at the time (2008), £40 of unleaded would reliably get me 400 miles of urban driving. About the same as the Fiesta 1.1 it replaced (and about double the mpg of the redblock Volvo 240 owned later).

Because I'm naturally stingy, I did resent the higher VED bracket (27cc over!!) but the rust's what did for mine. Though I figured if I was going to get stung by DVLA every six months, I might as well get the benefit of it - and replaced it with a 1981 Cortina 2.0 estate.

Don't let the tax band put you off an otherwise decent car - it's annoying, but compared to other running costs probably doesn't make it totally unaffordable.

I don't get that; to save 2 quid a week

For comparison a 1.4 would be €358 a yr here to tax, a 1.6 €514, a 2.0 €710. Anything over 3000cc €1809 a year. Forks sake, under 1000cc is €199

And even with the extortionate rates of motor tax, the differences are so negligible on a weekly basis compared to the biggest expense, fuel.

It's the logic of buying a new car and scrapping your old one for the 'cheaap tax.'

Hendry if you don't buy an escort this weekend I'm going to push the report button! I've just read this whole thread and nothings been bought or stolen. I r dissapoint. Buy a shitty escort, get whatever stickers and plates it should have in made up and pretend it is what it isnt

Not exactly what Hendry would be after but this is probably one of the best ones I've seen for a while. I'd buy this and drive it across Europe on a massive road trip.

I don't really think the mk4 Astra interior suits it. Interesting conversion though!

To the rest of you, good things come to those who wait, if I'm to buy one with as little rust as possible I need to find one such First, that isn't way way overpriced.
