The Morris Marina National Rally

trigger

Recommended Posts

After having such a laugh last year I decided to gate crash this years Morris Marina National rally, especially seeing as it was on my door step here in Suffolk, No body seemed to mind that i was in a Dolomite so i think i got away with it.

We first met up at a holiday Inn here in Ipswich before 17 of us (plus a few Non-Marinas) joined a convoy to a small museum in a village Buxhall near Stowmarket to look at a couple of old cars and a Sinclair ZX.

After that we then convoyed along the A14 to the Ipswich transport museum, i pulled the short straw and got stuck behind my mates Marina with burnt out rings which poured blue smoke all the way there and made me feel sick as a parrot...

Still, at least we all made it there.

We found this HOT Lada around the back, I've seen it a few times being driven by a old boy.

This Mumford Converted TC was a bit fugly, the roll over bar in the middle with the odd windows, apparently it was because the doors were too short being the same as a saloon so they had to add this bit.

Then today we moved on to the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket. That was quite nice.

I've come over all nostalgic - I had the pleasure* of owning a green Marina 1.3 Super for two years (reg YLO774S).

Seeing those brown interior shots made me go 'aw...'

The enduring memory of mine was the iffy wipers - the only way to switch them off was to wedge the stalk in between the two speeds - they'd randomly start going if you went over a bump in the road. Oh and the hilarious understeer of course - many a wobble when taking a bend too fast on country lanes.

Lush interior though - took it two years running to the Reading Festival and fucked the tent off and slept on the back seat - comfy.

This was on at the museum? If I had known I would have walked down for a look. It's 2 minutes from where I live. Would have been nice to see all of these. There is probably no better definition of what "Autoshite" is than the beige Ital that you photographed.

Is the blue P-reg saloon owned by someone local? I think I saw it drive past me in Stowmarket on Friday evening, it looked brilliant.

Yes we was in the field of Lockington Road, i don't know if the blue one was local or if the owners were staying locally, i was told it's for sale for £1500, being a 1.3 auto it's very sort after by the Minor guys, apparently people will pay £3500 for the engine and box, i was tempted to buy it, sell the engine and fit a manual one instead which is better.

The red S reg 1.3 auto next to it is a genuine 19000 mile car which was sold by the Doctor a couple of years back. A Minor specialist bought it especially for the running gear for a customer of theirs and fitted other engine and manual box in it. Apparently there was a up roar about that at the time.

Cracking shots there Trigger, that beige Riva estate is regularly spotted around Felixstowe, looks like it's had a pair of front wings, a common rot spot, 2 Rivas in one day though, ooooooft, and well done winning a trophy

Only 1 Ital, iz dissapoint.

That purple estate is gorgeous, Marina/Ital ownership is hopefully in the near future for me.

Yeah the turn out was a bit poor considering it's the Nationals and how big it was last year. The purple estate was my favorite and won the peoples vote. It really did look good on them wheels.

I need to show the red TC coop to my dad. He owned a red TC saloon years ago, and he still rates the thing. I still remember standing in front of it as a kid, and popping the paint bubbles on the top front edge of the wings. It wouldn't have been many years old at the time.

Great photos of the white coop with period tide marks as well!

It was BL Day at Gaydon so that might explain the low turnout. I wondered where all the Marinas had gone as there were only three at Gaydon and no club stand. Looks like fun and brings back memories of when I visited the Ipswich Transport Museum years ago - it was in the days of film cameras and that film didn't come out for some reason so I have no photos :( Anyway, there's a fine selection of Marinas there, plus a lovely Dolomite that was a well-deserved winner, and two Ladas is pretty amazing!!

A nice selection of MOT tidemarks on display. I like the red coupe on the black steelies and the scruffy white "R" reg saloon.
