Sigmund Fraud Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Do you have a scanner with live data ? Taking a look at the air and fuel sides will help determine what's going on, which is better than guesswork !

Taking a look at the air and fuel sides will help determine what's going on, which is better than guesswork ! I've had a look with my generic scanner to check fuel rail pressure, just to make sure the supply isn't the issue. I didn't seem to have any live data for boost pressure though. My guess is that there is a tear in a hose somewhere, the engine doesn't trigger a code because it thinks the turbo just isn't supposed to boost and it's now dumping too much fuel into the engine for the small amount of air that goes into it. Aside from the pipes going into and coming out of the intercooler I'm not really sure where that tear would be though. Split_Pin 1
Sigmund Fraud Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Sounds like the next steps would be to check the turbo - is there axial play ? does the actuator move when you start the engine ? - and then the EGR.
IronStar Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Is EGR working right? Does it regain a bit of power as it warms up? Last time I had something akin to that, it was an EGR blanking plate that burned up, resulting in no power and tons of smoke.
Split_Pin Posted January 16 Posted January 16 It almost definitely sounds like a boost leak based on the symptoms and how it came about. As you say it sounds like its dumping loads of fuel in to compensate. Is there something you can spray on/around the intercooler pipes to detect a change in revs? I'm wondering if one is split right at the end next to a clamp which would be hard to feel? I suppose a vacuum line to the actuator being split would just result in no boost at all but no other symptoms so can probably rule that out. I wonder if there's a split in a PCV / vacuum hose elsewhere though that could somehow cause the fuel delivery to go crazy.
Split_Pin Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Here is a diagram of the intercooler pipe system, not that helpful in terms of where it is on the engine but its a start. I think you said you tried disconnecting the MAP sensor or read the values on a scanner? That would have been my other thought for something drawing in excess fuel. Is it possible for the intercooler to be cracked or burst somewhere?
sierraman Posted January 16 Posted January 16 EGR blocked, they do this for fun. Or split hose at the bottom. Is it not throwing up any codes?
cbowditch Posted January 16 Posted January 16 hook up a smoke machine to confirm there are no splits in any hoses anywhere
sierraman Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Another thing these love doing is baking the actuator on the turbo, there should be a rod poking down, it should be moving freely. If it’s sticking at all that’s generally due to the turbo being caked to fuck in carbon. Is the glow plug light flashing?
Cento16v Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Hose 6 or 2 on that diagram are prime suspects. Used to split all the time. Edit: They also go soft and suck in under load sometimes (yep, not expand!) causing a loss of power. Turbo actuator fault usually triggered glow plug lamp to flash if it had failed. sierraman 1
Schaefft Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 Well, whoever assumed it was the turbo, you are a winner! I should have checked straight away but didn't want to believe it until I've removed all boost hoses and checked them thoroughly. 2 hours spent on faffing around only to feel the turbine wheel flopping around in the turbo housing. At 108k miles and about 2 miles into my ownership 🤦♂️ If anyone happens to know of a MK3 Mondeo or X-type with the 2.0 diesel that's getting broken for parts, let me know. I might give this pile another chance IF I can find a decent Turbo for super cheap. On a side note, I now know that the EGR has already been blocked off (after cleaning the valve...) and that one hose indeed was replaced, although it looked like it was about to slip off again. That will need to come off and the huge catalytic converter at the back of the engine will make this an absolute pain. I think the days for this X-type might be over unless a miracle happens. Split_Pin Posted January 16 Posted January 16 If it was a nice early 2.1 v6 or something with AWD then absolutely save it but I think your proposed direction with this one is spot on. Be interesting now to see what the sills are like (if you haven't already).

It wouldn't be the only thing it needs either despite the reasonable miles. I'll sell a few bits off it, keep the wheels, battery and radio and probably scrap the rest to make my money back. If anyone needs any parts, let me know! Split_Pin 1

Not the worst job on those, easier (slightly) than the 2.0 HDI unit.
Schaefft Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 With the X-Type out of service and my GF's Fiat 500 having clutch issues that now scare her too much to drive the car (sometimes doesn't go in or out of gear all of a sudden) the 500 quid XJ8 jumps into service! The restricted performance mode takes some of the fun out of it (will confirm the knock sensor being the problem tomorrow) but the burble of a Jag V8 is preferable over a rattly diesel any day. Just don't forget to fill it up once in a while... Spottedlaurel, Marina door handles, yes oui si and 12 others 15

Schaefft Posted January 17 Author Posted January 17 Took the Jag to neighboring Corbridge this morning to pick up a FB marketplace coffee maker and a £4.50 sourdough where I'm sure it would have looked right at home 15 years ago. On the way back I made an important discovery: Someone owns an LS400 locally I haven't been aware of at all! Second generation but same color as my Celsior. Great to see one still in use! Even more shocking however was that the same person has an S13 rotting away in their driveway! Now that's a sight you don't see everyday! Largely unmolested and only 60k miles! Off the road for 13+ years, I'm almost tempted to leave a note... Even better, on the way back the limp home mode of the Jag disappeared and I could finally boot it! Filmed on a private track in Mexico. Not as quick as I expected but then again this isn't the lightest of cars. Let's see how long it lasts, I'm not sure if knock sensor issues (the sensor itself, not a knocking engine) can come and go but fingers crossed it'll be good for now. I rewarded it with a badly needed hoover and replaced the brake light bulb (the rest came back on their own). As with most new cars I got some great loot: Ok it's mostly trash but there's a Snap On 10mm socket in there which means I've already recouped most of my investment. I ended up chatting with someone local for 2 hours who only really wanted to pick up some soil (he had plenty of interesting chod in the 80s) so I didn't get the chance to remove the window tint yet, hopefully that'll happen tomorrow. dome, CGSB, lesapandre and 13 others 16

Schaefft Posted January 30 Author Posted January 30 What do you do when all your leads for an Audi A8 ABS module lead to nowhere? You buy another car of course! Yes, I am finally owning a VW Phaeton! It's been a long time coming and while it isn't a V8 or W12-powered model I would love to have, it isn't the usual 3.0TDI either. What we have here is the 3.2 VR6 variant, very unusual for the UK! I couldn't really say no to what was a rediculously low priced example of Piech's masterpiece that popped up in the low cost, big liability thread. Only that this doesn't appear to be much of a liability at all! It has its issues of course so the first stop was at a VW/Audi enthusiast in Chester-le-street to have a look at his parts car, which happens to be near identical to mine (and one I considered buying before, unfortunately the bumper is smashed). We didn't have much time to investigate the reason mine was so cheap (non-working brake lights) but he was able to give me some valuable info and a bonnet catch which we quickly swapped around (I still struggle to keep the bonnet shut, so probably cable related). As you can tell above, it didn't take me much time at all to figure out why the brakelights weren't working. A blown fuse was all it needed replacing. Why did the fuse blow? A bootlid loom repair thats failing now. With a bit of luck I will have the worst of its issues sorted for less than the change I found inside the car. All in all a successful first day of Phaeton ownership as the car drives great otherwise (incl. the top speed test which in hindsight wasn't a good idea considering the bonnet latch situation...). But wait, what's in front of it there...? Spottedlaurel, privatewire, Asimo and 24 others 27
Schaefft Posted January 30 Author Posted January 30 Yes, the Phaeton wasn't the only car that arrived here today! In fact, this Matra Murena (not an S apparently despite what the decal says) is coming from the same seller! As we are all enablers around here I took a few photos of this local Murena that's been off the road for a considerable time. Paul who was selling the Phaeton was trying to find a buyer for this as well. Since I know people who are very much into this kind of thing I had to take a few photos. And here we are now! I'll let the owner reveal themselves here but this sure is one hell of a car! I can't wait to have a closer look at this as well an get it ready for its long trip home! It's just* like a Mclaren F1 inside! Coprolalia, Split_Pin, mercedade and 22 others 25
